The letter mentions that goods were consigned by Hardley's per the S. S. 'Aorangi'. He is also asking if any Scalebuoys have been used in connection with Sewerage Works. Medal issued to celebrate the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911. George ascended the throne on his father?s death on 9 May 1910. During his reign, which spanned World War I, the royal house abandoned the title the house of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (or the house of Hanover or Brunswick) and became known as the house of Windsor. George died in 1936, and was succeeded briefly by Edward VIII. Different versions of this medal were produced for the states. This souvenir cup of the Coronation of King George VI of England in 1937 was the official design of the British Pottery Manufacturers Federation. Good quality souvenirs such as this one sold well in Australia in the Coronation year and are collected still today. The Coronation was held in Westminster Abbey in London on 12th May 1937 following the abdication of King George’s brother, Edward VIII, in December 1936. The Coronation was celebrated with the issue of medals, coins, stamps, official and unofficial gatherings and the production of memorabilia. The Coronation was the first to be filmed and broadcast on radio and the first to feature an outside television broadcast. This souvenir cup is of interest as an example of the type of souvenir sold in Australia in 1937 to commemorate the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth of England. It is an attractive item and will be useful for display. This is a souvenir cup issued for the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in May 1937. It is made of white china with the body of the cup tapering slightly to the top rim. One side of the cup features a colour image of a crown, a wreath and the initials ‘G’ and ‘E’ and the other side has a colour image of King George and Queen Elizabeth, with a crown on top and encircled by leaves and acorns from an oak tree. The table and chairs once belonged to the Officers' Mess, 24th Battalion. From 1928 - 1936 the CO 24th Battallion was Lt Col S.G. Savige, DSO MC. It was during this time that the chairs were made and used for dining-in nights. During the a ceremony of remembrance, each officer stood behind his chair and called the name on its back as a mark of respect for those KIA during WW1. At the inaugural meeting of the Club, from which arose Melbourne Legacy in September 1923, eight of the fourteen members had worn the colour patch of 24th Battalion.The connection to Savige and the fact that many of his officers from 24th Battalion became members of Melbourne Legacy. This table and its chairs were formally gifted to Melbourne Legacy on 9th May 1956 when the Club moved to Legacy House. They have been used since in the Club's Board Room, now located on level 1, Legacy House, 293 Swanston Street, Melbourne. In 1936, a plate commemorating Adam Lindsay Gordon's service as a soldier of the Queen was installed in the Wilson Memorial Hall— formerly known as the Brighton Drill Hall— recording that the poet was sworn in there as a member of the Brighton Artillery Corps in 1869. Gordon lived in Brighton for only 14 months, but took an active interest in the Artillery Corps. In addition to the memorial plate, two photographs of the Brighton Artillery corps, were unveiled by Mr A. C. Wilson, a son of the Councillor Thomas Wilson before whom the poet took the oath of allegiance to the Queen. This is a steel, bench-mounted, hand-operated (60 rpm) butter churn for making small amounts of butter from cream in the home. It was made by the Sydney firm of Malleys Ltd from the 1930s until the 1950s and came in 3 and 5 quart sizes. Malleys Ltd was established in about 1890 by Francis Malley (1863-1932). This firm was located in the Sydney suburb of Alexandria, in McEvoy Street. They manufactured items for use in the dairy industry, as well as for hardware related to building and plumbing. Many of the Malley dairy products were sold under the "Sunrise" name. Malley retired in 1912. In 1931 there were branches at Parramatta, Hurstville & North Sydney. Butter churns were machines used to produce butter by the violent agitation of separated cream. Depending on the design of the churn, the agitation would be variously achieved by a repetitive thrashing, centrifugal motion or internal paddles. Churns were typically constructed from wood, glass and cast-iron; with tin or steel commonly used for some fixtures. The subject item gives an insight into domestic life where butter was made in the home.Heavy red cast iron base, with a long handle, wooden grip, connected to a shaft along the base, thence, to a cog wheel, and gear, to a second shaft and paddle in a metal basin. Basin has lid, and hole in base with a screw cap to allow the draining of the butter milk. Designed to be placed on a bench, with the handle over the edge. These gramophone needles were manufactured by The Gramophone Company Limited for use in gramophones that had an arm in which to insert a needle to play an old shellac record. The Gramophone Company was an early recording company based in the United Kingdom and was the parent organization for the His Master’s Voice label of recording devices. The company was founded in 1897 and merged in 1931 with another company to form E.M.I. (Electric and Musical Industries) but the name The Gramophone Company continued in Britain until the 1970s. Gramophones were a popular household item from the late 19th century until the mid 20th century when more sophisticated recording and playing devices were invented. These gramophone needles is of some interest as an example of entertainment devices of the past. It will be useful for display. .1This is a metal box with a lid containing an image of a dog and a phonograph (‘His Master’s Voice’) painted in white and brown on a dark blue background. Inside the tin are about 150 metal gramophone needles, most of them being a little rusted. The needles are covered with a sheet of brown paper with yellow printing. The tin itself is rusted and the printing is discoloured. There is a paper sticker on the back of the box with an early catalogue number (almost obliterated). .2 Small rectangular plastic container with picture of white polar bear with blue background. This trophy has been presented to the Warrnambool & District Football League by the South Warrnambool Football Club. This latter club still plays in the Hampden Football League and dates back to the 1880s and possibly beyond and has always been a traditional rival of the Warrnambool Football Club. West End Football Club dates back to the 1890s and joined with the Allansford Football Club in the 1960s to form the West End Allansford team. In 2001 the name ‘West End’ was dropped from the club’s name. Russells Creek Football Club was established in 1931 and still plays in the Warrnambool & District Football League which dates back to the early 1900sThis football trophy is of interest as it comes from the mid 20th century and concerns two local Warrnambool football clubs still existing today and one club that no longer exists.This is a wooden trophy in the shape of a shield. It has a silver scroll on the top and a silver heart shape in the middle. There is a cord on the back of the shield attached by metal hooks for hanging purposes. From Eltham Montmorency Uniting Church, History http://www.elthammontmorencyuca.org/history/ In 1914 a small group of Presbyterians living on 'The Montmorency Estate', which had been established when the railway was extended to Eltham several years before, began meeting for worship in the Rattray Rd home of Robert Sharpe. Two years later a small weatherboard church, administered from Scots Church, Heidelberg, was built on land donated by Mr. Sharpe. In 1931 this building was moved to the corner of Rattray Road and Mountain View Roads. The idea for a Bowling Club was started by Mr. Bert Cocks, the Manager of the State Savings Bank when he arrived in Ringwood in 1929 but it took two years before a suitable site and was found and in 1931 the club as formed. Ther were 57 foundation members. The President was Councillor Arthur Blood and W. Cox, Secretary. Ten months later the first Annual Report stated that " the green was ready for sowing, a Club House with a billiard table , donations of light fittings and furnishings by members and committee and a balance sheet showing assets over liabilities of £446,3,8." The book continues until 1961.It was compiled by Members Jack Knox and Wilfred Bamford.Plain green hard-covered book (untitled) with 25 typed pages. Originally known as Caulfield Shire Hall, the original 1884 building was designed by Shire surveyor Sydney Smith. In 1931 the Caulfield Town Hall, as it was then known, was remodelled to include the main hall and foyer and a Neo-Grecian portico with Corinthian Order columns. Major works completed since 1945 include Caulfield Arts Complex (opened 20 August 1988), Caulfield Library (opened 4 December 1993) and the award-winning Caulfield Municipal Offices extension which opened on 24 February 1991. The building is listed as No. H0106 in the GECC Heritage Overlay Schedule. The site also includes a Significant Tree (H&H Register No. 034). Brick exterior of two storey building painted white and featuring pillared portico entrance and solid glass doors on Glen Eira road facing north. On the eastern side of the portico is a two storey clock tower with clock surmounted by a flagpole and flag. Some of the eastern section of the building is original with various alterations over the years. Henry MORITZ (1931- ) Born Mainz, Germany Arrived Australia c1952 Henry Moritz was an experienced commercial artist when he left Germany for Australia. After working as a railwayman, coal miner, fruit picker and steelworker, he started teaching commercial art at the Ballarat School of Mines Technical Art School in 1963. He moved to the Mount Helen Tertiary Division, and was head of the Art School at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education (BCAE) when he produced this work. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.Original caricature of Bill Durant. Both Bill Durant and artist Henry Moritz were staff members at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education (later Federation University). According to the donor, the photo was taken before the driveway was constructed. The house was later extended at the rear and was re-roofed. The donor's grandparents Daniel Patrick Liddy and Beatrice Bridget Tyner (known as 'Beat') were married in at her parents' home in Glencoe, South Australia on 13 December 1908. They lived in the Carlton / North Melbourne area before moving to Surrey Hills. Electoral rolls list them at 92 Curtain Street, North Carlton in 1913. According to the donor, they rented several properties before purchasing 45 Wandsworth Road. They are listed at Albert Crescent in 1914 and 1919, but also lived in Zetland Road. They purchased 45 Wandsworth Road in c1923 and are listed in the electoral rolls there in 1924. The donor's mother Ellen Dorothy Liddy (known as Eileen) was born in 1909; her brother Daniel John Liddy was born in 1911, both in Carlton. Daniel Patrick Liddy died in 1955; his wife Beatrice died in 1959. 7A Built in 1905 and painted Canadian red & dark brown, this locomotive was issued to the Wangaratta to Whitfield line and saw service on all four lines with most of its service on the Upper Fern Tree Gully to Gembrook line. It was temporarily withdrawn from service in 1958 and returned to service at Belgrave in 1962 for the reopening of this line where it has seen almost continuous service since. 1979 saw the early two-tone green colour scheme applied to this loco as a trial even though it never historically carried it, but its physical configuration was not altered accordingly. Herbert A Leighton was an actor and Elocution teacher, known widely in the Eastern states of Australia where he performed with his wife Tracy Hamilton. However all was not as it seemed. In 1903 he was arrested in Perth after suspicions were raised when he purchased expensive jewellery and clothes for his wife. Subsequently six thousand pounds in banknotes was found under his bed. Another fellow from his theatre group was also arrested and charged with bank robbery. Leighton was charged with receiving money knowing it was stolen. Investigations by the Perth police showed that Leighton was really Norman Campbell who had been born in Gippsland. He had worked as a clerk in the Victorian Savings Bank in Melbourne and then in the same role in the Sydney Savings Bank. During this time he had amassed large sums of money by forgery, a crime he spent seven years in prison for. He then emerged as the newly minted H. A. Leighton, actor and elocution teacher in Bendigo. .Large format scrapbook collated by D H Leighton. The material includes items from theatrical performances and programs from Bendigo and other cities. Includes information about Amy Castles and other Bendigo performers including Alex J Hamilton. Includes information about a large number of performers who visited Bendigo. Many of the items overlap others. The scrapbook has a heavy pink cover with green tape binding on the spine and the corners with brown paper pages. Donald Paterson "Don" Turnbull (28 May 1909 - 30 January 1994) was a tennis player from Australia. He won the men's doubles title at the Australian Championships twice, in 1936 and 1937. Turnbull represented Australia in three Davis Cup ties, including the 1933 Europe Zone final against Great Britain. Photos include 1935 Davis Cup team. Album is now empty.
