This image could be one of several formal occasions attended by Lady Maie Casey and Lord Richard Casey, as both were dedicated patrons of International House. In March 1963, Lord Casey opened the Samuel Wadham Wing, named for the man in the centre of this image. Samuel Wadham (1891–1972) was a professor of agriculture at the University of Melbourne and chair of the International House Council from 1959 to 1969. These photos are of a gathering at the Shrine of Legatees and a delivery of lone pine saplings on the back of a ute. Legatee George Woodward was present, also a school girl and a veteran. These photos were in an album of photos from 1993. These are the saplings grown from the seeds collected by President Chas Wilks in 1989 (item 01426). From an article in The Answer in June 1994 the event was the official handing over of the seedlings that were propagated. Present were Minister for Natural Resources, The Hon Geoffrey Coleman and Gallipoli veteran Tom Brain. Legacy has run a programme since the 1970s of propagating saplings taken from seeds of pine descended from a pine tree from Gallipoli and giving them to various clubs, schools and town councils. Legacy is helping to keep the memory of the Gallipoli "Lone Pine" alive - its spirit living on today. Presentations are made to schools, ex-service organisations and interested bodies by Legacy Clubs in the hope that they will be cherished as a symbol of nationhood and of its just pride, devotion, courage, selflessness and sense of service to others.A record of Legacy being involved with distributing saplings in 1993. Also a photo of John Lady and Terry Hawksley. The attached label says: " Melbourne Legacy held its first official public launch - a luncheon for Melbourne's leading business community at the ANZ Pavilion at the Victorian Arts Centre to highlight 'Legacy Week'. Professor Geoffrey Blainey, AO, addressed the guests and was joined by Legacy's 1988 personality, Australia's first under 4 minute miler, John Lady." They were in a folio of photos from 1988. The bicentenary of Australia was celebrated in 1988. It marked 200 years since the arrival of the First Fleet of British convict ships at Sydney in 1788.
