Ephemera - Invitation, Private Opening, 1923
Invitation card for the private opening of the Wattle Path Palais & Cafe, on the Esplanade, St Kilda, on 30 October 1923. The event was written up in The Argus newspaper the next day as follows: WATTLE PATH PALAIS OPENED. Five thousand persons were present at the "private opening" last night of the Wattle Path Palais and Cafe, St Kilda esplanade. The mayor of St Kilda (Councillor Allan) welcomed the guests on behalf of the management. The floor, 190ft. x 90ft, is claimed to be the largest specially constructed for dancing in Australia. There was much to admire in the colour tones, which blended brown, blue, and gold harmoniously, while soft lighting effects came from old gold georgette and crepe-de-chene lamp shades. A good band was provided. Sixty-five loges are available for parties of dancers. A feature of the building is the open-air pagoda, in which free band concerts are to be given on Sundays.White card, discoloured with age, printed in brown with teal profile in background.wattle path palais & cafe, palais de danse -

Wonthaggi Coal Skip, Early 20th century
One of two types of four wheel skips widely used on the Wonthaggi Coal Fields for transportation from the underground workings to the surface screening and loading areas. Haulage underground was accomplished by the use of pit ponies, whilst an endless rope system was used to bring the skips to the surface areas. Much of the coal for the colony of Victoria was sourced from Newcastle and the Hunter Region in New South Wales, along with local supplies from private and co-operative coal mines at Outtrim, Jumbunna and Korumburra in Gippsland. After the 1909–1910 strike by coal miners in the Hunter Valley, the Victorian state government were determined to ensure stability in local supplies of coal. The State Coal Mine and the town of Wonthaggi came into being in 1910 to supply coal for the Victorian Railways. It was one of the largest and most dangerous collieries in Australia. At its peak in 1926 the mine produced 2,435 long tons (2,474 t) per day, with the Victorian Railways buying 90% of production. In 1928, Wonthaggi coal accounted for around 60% of Victorian Railways coal consumption.Historic - Industrial - Victorian Railways - Narrow Gauge Railway rolling stock - Wonthaggi Coal Fields, Victoria, AustraliaRectangular steel bin with wood frame and steel wheelspuffing billy, coal skip, wonthaggi, wonthaggi coal fields, 2'0" gauge, brown coal -

Day's Petrol Rail Tractor, Petrol Rail Tractor Gauge 2'0", circa 1926 - 1940
Rail tractors were popular with Victorian sawmillers. They were generally cheaper than a steam locomotive, required no special qualifications to drive, and used proven power plants for which spares were available locally. The tractor was constructed by Day’s Engineering of South Melbourne which, although better known for its pumping equipment, built more than fifty rail tractors for Victorian sawmillers and other industrial tramway users. W. Day & Sons is believed to have constructed its first light railway locomotive in 1926. From then until the mid 1940s, the firm appears to have built at least fifty locomotives at its premises in South Melbourne, of which roughly half were four-wheel locomotives and roughly half were six-wheel locomotives like the restored Day’s rail tractor formerly operated by Ruoak Timbers. Of the four-wheel locomotives, ten were 2-ft (610mm) gauge locomotives similar to this one. Today, only two survive, a complete example at the Puffing Billy Railway Museum at Menzies Creek, and one at Alexandra Timber Tramway Museum This 2-ft gauge 4wPM locomotive is believed to have been one of two Day's Petrol Rail tractors formerly used by Cheetham Salt, possibly at the Moolap works near Geelong. City of Ballarat
Artwork, other - Public Artwork, Ex-Prisoners of War Memorial by Peter Blizzard, 2004
This memorial designed by Peter Blizzard is dedicated to more than 36,000 Australian men and women were held captive as prisoners by the enemy during the Boer War, World War 1, World War 2 and the Korean War. This memorial honours and names them, the names are etched into the black granite wall adjacent to the pathway. Water springs from beneath the 'Lest We Forget' stone then flows down the wall into the narrow watercourse in front of the first group of names and into the reflective pool, then continues past the second group of names. Finally it disappears under the pathway, returning to its source under the 'Lest We Forget' stone to start the journey again. Water symbolizes the essential nature of man, sacrifice, suffering, spirituality, healing, cleansing, birth and re-birth. The memorial is created from natural materials and is designed to be in harmony with the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, and to create a sense of timeless, dignity and respect. The long pathway of the monument is designed to create a visual perspective of the large distances that Australians travelled to the various conflicts. The paving is shaped like railway sleepers in recognition of the role that railways and railway journeys were relevant to many prisoners of war. The Memorial was declared the first military memorial of national significance located outside Canberra in 2008. Dedication services are held at the memorial on the Sunday closest to 6th of February, ANZAC day and on Remembrance Day. The memorial is of historical and aesthetic importance to the people of BallaratMonument made from carved bluestone, water feature and flagsInscribed with the names of 36,000 Australian men and women were held captive as prisoners by the enemy during the Boer War, World War 1, World War 2 and the Korean War. Artwork, other - Public Artwork, Eight Hour Day Memorial (James Galloway Memorial), 1880
This quartz and bluestone monument pays tribute to James Galloway the founder of the the eight-hour day system that gave workers the right to stop work after 8 hours without any penalty. The system was widely celebrated as a world first and Australia became known as a workingman’s paradise. Eight hour day is translated as: Eight hours of work, eight hours of leisure and eight hours of rest. In 1880, the 8hr day Anniversary Committee decided to mark the establishment of the 8hrs day by erecting a monument to the memory of the pioneer of the 8hr movement in the colony, James Galloway. The campaign for the Galloway monument was so successful that one year later on 21 April 1881, and after the longest 8hrs day procession to that date, the Mayor of the City, Councillor A T Morrison, imbarred the monument at the foot of Sturt Street, Ballarat. The monument is of historic significance to the people of BallaratGranite spire with four cast iron drinking fountains and marble tablets.
