Ernest William Dark was born at Ballarat East. Before his enlistment on 10 April 1915, aged 19, Dark was a boot salesman. His next of kin on the enlistment papers was his mother Sarah Dark of 40 Bridge Street, Ballarat East. Ernest Dark was a very early World War One enlistment with the regimental number of 19A. A newspaper article that mentions the release of WB Russell's book about Stan Savige 'There goes a man' in 1959. It was attached a letter from Gerta Gillies to Legatee Aaron Bettie about the publication of the biography of Stan Savige. Mrs Gillies was the first instructor for girls classes. Legatee Aaron Beattie helped organise many of the early demonstrations. The letter says Mrs Gillies was thrilled to receive a copy of the book. She says: 'How can I convey in words how deeply touched I am at your gift of the book! What wonderful memories it calls up of the Great Man, General Savige. The Artist in Residence program enabled research of the Museum's collection of artefacts relating to 11th Battalion AIF. Access was provided to the behind the scenes storerooms of uniforms, banners, photographs, artefacts and diaries. Michele summarised her experience with the project as follows: "It was an interesting experience and a topic I would not probably have considered had I not been asked. The mixture of history and the people who lived through these times has been an absorbing and rewarding journey for my art practice."Mixed media / textile art from Department of Culture and the Arts, Artist in Residence program 2015 by Michele Eastwood. The hand knitted sleeveless jumper in the Museum, made by Sergeant John Ellwood Rudd of the 48th Battalion was the inspiration behind this work. With great ingenuity John Rudd unwound the knitted socks sent by the women back home. Creating knitting needles fashioned from the barbed wire surrounding the POW camp he was incarcerated in, he knitted a jumper to help him through the freezing winters of Germany in the First World War. Original artefact was inspiration for this artistic interpretation.

This puzzle was used by the Parker family. You probably had a set similar to these; I know I did as a kid. While these haven't completely vanished from the toy landscape, there are still a few sets of "Puzzle Blocks" being made today. Basically, these were six puzzles in one, made up of wooden cubes, each with 1/20 of the image glued to them. Usually they came in a tray or carrying case, allowing the owner to have a place to assemble the pictures. A 20 piece Walt Disney's All Wood Blocks puzzle with 6 coloured forms or pictures on all four sides of the blocks in a yellow cardboard carry case with a 6 in 1 Puzzle. The case has a plastic see through frame on the top to see the puzzle and a white plastic closing clip and handle on one side. The puzzle can be made in the box.
