Set of three manufacturer's serial plates from GE 247-A motors used in tramcars. Manufactured in Australia under licence from General Electric of the USA. Known as "railway motors" in the USA. Used extensively in Australian tramway systems. Black and white print from a copy negative of a group of ESCO employees (motormen conductors and pointsboys?) in front of the tram depot with tram cars 17, 10 and 2 behind. All wearing uniform hats, but not all wearing full uniform (no badges but wearing ties - possibly temporary or casual staff - c1906 - 51 people. Trams have destination boards fitted to the tram above the roof. See Reg Item 709 for a wider view. The tram became Ballarat No. 43 1 - tram lifted on four jacks with a single trucker behind 2 - Liftng a Brill 22E bogie onto the truck gooseneck. 3 - Tram lifted prior to backing the truck under it. 4 - Tram body lowered onto the truck. 5 - Ready for departure - note the destination of Belmont. Letter - from C Roy G Field to Wal Jack, C Roy G Field, 1944c
Wal Jack had an extensive range of correspondents throughout Australia and the world who often prepared extensive notes and records for him. It would appear from the letter that both parties are undertaking wartime activities, and provides details of horse tramways in South Australia and Western Australia. The letter may have had a further sheet as it is unsigned. One of a number of this type of tram still in working order in Australian tramway museums. Has no motors. Interior one of the few given a paint finish by SEC, others are varnished. Has timber panelled sides.Single truck (4 wheels), drop ends, modified open California combination to closed car, with 4 doors, 2 at either end, longitudinal seats, sliding internal doors, air brakes. - electric motors removed. Sheet metal signs mounted onto 2 metal brackets top and bottom by rivets. Mounted on wood pole so it faced outwards at right angles.
