Bales have been used to store and were a standard trading unit for wool for centuries. A standard wool bale holds about 60 compressed wool fleeces and weighs a minimum of 120 kgs. Bridge attachment associated with midwife Mary Howlett, c. 1866-1920
The item is possibly part of an irrigation set. Mary Howlett (1840-1922) began practising as a country midwife in 1866 in the western district of Victoria. She qualified as a 'ladies monthly nurse' in 1887 and continued to practise as a nurse and midwife until 1920.She began her six months training at the Melbourne Lying-In Hospital. She was known by many as 'Auntie', and her career spanned more than 50 years. Equipment - Schimmelbusch anaesthetic mask, Mid 20th Century
The Schimmelbusch mask is an open breathing system for delivering an anesthetic. The device was invented by Curt Schimmelbusch in 1889, and was used until the 1950s (though it is still applied in some developing countries). The device consists of a wire frame which is covered with several beds of gauze and applied to the patient's face over the mouth and nose. Then high-volatility anesthetic (usually diethyl ether or halothane, and historically chloroform) is dripped on it, allowing the patient to inhale a mix of the evaporated anesthetic and air. The device is designed to prevent the anesthetic from coming in contact with the patient's skin, where it can cause irritation.This model differs from the others in that the mask's handle is attached to the mask, as opposed to the spring. Dugald McPherson's Ashen's Homestead (Remnants) c1920’s Ashen's south of Murtoa was one of the area's original squatting runs. This photo taken in the 1920's shows the homestead after a violent storm had been through the area. In 1853, the country around Ashen's was covered by timber, she-oaks, bull-oaks, light gum and box thickets of ti-tree and clumps of pine and wattles. The vegetation was so thick outside the horse paddock it was difficult to move in any direction. It was said McPherson and two others fought over the land.Back entrance to Ashen's Station.stawell -

The Bolton family founded a printing business in Bendigo in 1885. Benjamin Bolton was a prominent businessman and on this death in 1901 William Bolton (Mayor 1936 -37) and his brothers took over the business. An article in the Weekly Bulletin in April 1963 shows there was a Clay Target Shoot day at the Point Cook RAAF Station. The winners of the first Legacy Shield was the Croydon Gun Club. The event raised £425 and was going to be an annual event. The badge of Legacy is the Torch and Wreath of Laurel. The Torch signifies the undying flame of service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for their country. A hat pin is a decorative pin for holding a hat to the head. During the 1880s, bonnets gave way to hats, and the popularity of hatpins soared. They remained a standard women's accessory through the 1910s and were produced in a vast range of materials and types. They were typically around 20 cm in length, with the pinhead being the most decorated part. In some countries they were viewed as a potentially dangerous weapon which could be used by women in self-defence, so regulations were introduced to limit the length allowed. Transportation of goods and material by bullock teams was a common feature of life in nineteenth century Australia. Bullock teams could comprise more than twenty bullocks to haul very large and heavy loads. They were the equivalent of large trucks on the roads of today. It is not known who the man in this picture is or his precise location. This photo is presumed to be of a professional carrier with some of his bullocks taking a rest between jobs. Many Australian country towns have very wide main streets to allow for large bullock teams to turn without having to unharness and reharness the animals.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Standing near them is a man with a long rod with a piece of rope or other material extending from the end of the rod to form a bullock team leader's whip.
