Hung in the public bar of the Rose and Crown Hotel in Bay Street soon after the 2nd World War until major renovations were carried out in aprrox 1986/7. It was then returned or donated to the Port Melbourne Sub-Branch of the RSL, but due to diminishing membership they soon donated it to the PMCC for safe keeping or display. Program for a supper to celebrate Councillor Burnett Gray's 30 years service with St Kilda Council, held at St Kilda Town Hall on 21 August 1944. It contains the toasts and menu. Burnett Gray served on St Kilda City Council from 1914 to 1915 and from 1920 to 1948 and was Mayor from 1922 to 1923 and from 1926 to 1927. Made from wool sold atThe Geelong Wool Exchange which had just returned to the National Wool Centre (currently the home of the National Wool Museum, formely Dennys Lascells) on Tuesday 13th of October 1987. Lempriere (Aust.) Pty. Ltd. was the buyer of the first bale of wool who also previously brought the first bale of wool at the first wool auctions in Geelong in 1858. This case was used by Captain Charles Arblaster, a graduate of the Royal Military College Duntroon, who served with the 8th Light Horse Regiment at Gallipoli where he was wounded and evacuated to the United Kingdom for treatment. He returned to Egypt and transferred to the 53rd Infantry Battalion and proceeded to the Western Front where he was wounded and taken prisoner of war at Fromelles on 20 July 1916 and died of wounds four days later. Returning from Manila in 1856 with a cargo of rice, sugar and rope. Mountain Maid was wrecked after colliding with the Victorian steamer, SS Queen. No lives were lost but the ship sank quickly and the crew was forced to swim for their lives. The pilot onboard Mountain Maid was dismissed from the Pilot service, as he'd already run two other ships aground before changing direction and causing the collision with SS Queen (Lomdahl 1992:Mountain Maid). With the approval of the railways, in February1959 a special tourist train was organized by the Australian Railways Historical Society in conjunction with the "Kanyana: Festival Committee of Colac, Victoria, to run from Colac to Beech Forest. Eight NBH carriages, in store at Newport, were transferred to Colac. The train proved to be so popular that additional trains were later run over the next two years until the temporarily disused Puffing Billy needed the NBH carriages returned.Locomotive G42, labelled "A.R.H.S., Special Excursion, Kanyana", with a guard's van, eight NBH excursion carriages and an additonal guard's van attached, stands at Gellibrand Station with a large group of passengers milling outside the train. Oliver Heyward was born in Tasmania 16/3/1926 and died in Melbourne 15/12/2003. He was a Tasmanian Rhodes Scholar in 1949 and was ordained into the Anglican Church in England in 1954. He initially served in England before returning to Tasmania and then Victoria. Upon his enthronement as Bishop in 1975, he became the 6th Bishop of Bendigo from 1975 - 1991. Frederick Napoli Prescott was a prominent Bendigo Optician and Jeweller. He was born and educated in Hobart before joining his father's jewellery and optical business. After studying in Europe to gain further qualifications he returned to Australia and opened a business at the corner of Mitchell and Hargreaves Street Bendigo. He was later in partnership with Mr C.M. Dawe trading as Prescott & Dawe. In 1934 the Trustees of the Marie Krecklow Estate donated 500 pounds to furnish and equip an empty Ward in the Melbourne District Nursing Society After-Care Hospital in the memory of Mrs. Marie Krecklow. This image shows the furnishings in the Ward of the Hospital at 45 Victoria Parade, Collingwood. The boys in this image are receiving nursing care before returning home following their recuperation. Many children were nursed at the hospital, some long term during the Polio epidemic. The Society were pioneers in recognizing the need for premises where patients too ill to be in their own home, but not ill enough to go to hospital, was needed, and the Society built, then opened, the Melbourne District Nursing Society After-Care Home in 1926, (from 1934 called After-Care Hospital), for these patients, and patients from Melbourne Hospitals who required recuperation before returning home. Many children were nursed there, some long term during the Polio epidemic and the Society employed two School Teachers. The Society now ran two divisions, the After-Care with its own Trained nurses and the District division. The Society were the first in Melbourne, in early 1928, to recognize some patients leaving the After-Care, and many at home, needed further social care and they set up ‘Almoners’ from their committee to visit these patients and be intermediaries in getting them social assistance. It was late the following year before the first training of Almoners took place in Melbourne. In 1930 the Society employed a full time kindergarten teacher to visit poor children in their homes. That year the Society were pioneers in opening an Ante-Natal Clinic at the After-Care, setting a high standard with equipment, keeping records and providing leaflets with instructions in how to keep healthy during pregnancy, what complications to look for and what to do when labour commenced. In 1934 the Society were pioneers again when they opened the first Women’s Welfare Clinic in Melbourne giving advice on birth-control, at first attended by their own patients, but then accepting patients from public hospitals until their own clinics were opened.A trained Almoner was employed at the hospital but left after twelve months due to the volume of work. Unable to employ another trained Almoner due to a shortage of them, a Social Service Officer was employed at the After-Care who successfully gained better housing from the Housing Commission for families living under unsuitable conditions. In the 1950s the Hospital and Charities Commission decided to take over the After-Care Hospital, so the Melbourne District Nursing Society and After-Care Hospital separated and the Melbourne District Nursing Service was formed, setting up Headquarters at 452 St. Kilda Road. Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Speak attended Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies College 1937 - 1938. She won the Junior Tennis Champion in 1938. Betty worked as a telephonist at Coleraine Post Office after leaving CPLC in 1938. In 1949, she married Leslie James Steff from Konongwootong. They had two daughters. In 1967 Betty returned to work at the Coleraine Post Office and worked for 17 years, moving to the Hamilton PO after the Coleraine PO closed around 1980. She continued to play tennis throughout her adult years. Daughter Gwenda Steff, who donated the trophy to the school in 2016, says 'Mum was passionate about her tennis. She had a formidable backhand shot that few could return. She played Saturday afternoon competition tennis up until her late 40's and she instilled her love of the game into both my sister Margaret and myself. Mum was always too humble to acknowledge her amazing abilities - both on and off the tennis court. Sanders was a well-known local potter who worked for a time with David Boyd at the Martin Boyd Pottery, before returning to Melbourne where he had some association with Arthur Boyd, at the pottery in Murrumbeena. Sanders set up a studio in Eltham in the early 1950s and made the first of a series of architectural ceramic murals with painter and print maker Lawrence Daws in 1956. In 1957 he left for Europe and while there was inspired by the Spanish artist Joan Miro’s unconventional painting style and large scale murals, in particular Wall of the Moon (1957). After returning from his travels in Europe to Australia in 1964, he began to work solely on creating ceramic murals, some of which were commissioned for Southland Shopping Centre in Cheltenham, Melbourne, 1968 (now demolished), the National Mutual Centre, Melbourne,1964-5 (now demolished), Dee Why Library, Sydney 1966, Woden Valley High School, ACT, 1967, Tullamarine Airport Melbourne, 1969-70 (now demolished), Perth Concert Hall, 1971 and The University of Melbourne,1975 (with John Olsen). This mural is one of only three remaining in the public realm by Tom Sanders (the others are at the Perth Concert Hall (1971) and at the University of Melbourne (1975). The date on this card implies someone sent this a few months later from Belfast. One of the items relating to JB McLean was a vesta (match) case from Belfast (see item 01125). This postcard was with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. George (1895-1976) is on the left; he lived in Middlesex Road, Surrey Hills. He was a clerk and aged 20 when he enlisted on 16 November 1914. He was the son of James Rayment Jnr and his wife Harriet Frances (nee Ratten). He was assigned to 3rd Light Horse Brigade, Headquarters and embarked on TRANSPORT A16 Star Of Victoria on 25 February 1915. He returned to Australia 22 March 1917. His brother James A Rayment (SERN 3106) was a carpenter and enlisted on 14 July 1915, aged 26. He embarked on HMAT A40 Ceramic on 24 November 1915, assigned to the 5th Field Company Engineers. He won a Military Medal "For gallant work in constructing M.G. emplacements" at Pozieres. Recommendation date: 13 September 1916. Also a Military Medal "For devotion to duty under all circumstances and for efficient handling of working parties." Recommendation date: 14 June 1916. He returned to Australia 13 April 1919. A press release from Melbourne Legacy in 1975 which relates the story of a junior legatee playing professional football. The information was intended to be used by press and magazines etc. The junior legatee is not named but it mentions he had a rough home life, then his father died and his siblings became State Wards. His father was a returned ex-serviceman and Legacy heard of the boy's situation and began regular visits to the family and gave not only advice but financial assistance as well, to try and provide a normal family life. The younger children were returned from state care. The future footballer endeavoured to rise above his background and on finishing school he wanted to apply for a job that called for honesty and integrity and involved responsibility for money. Thi family background was held against him until with the help of Legacy he won the day. Legacy helped provide appropriate clothing for his new position. Since then he has gone from strength to strength in his career and in his sport as well.
