The Bogong Hotel, Tawonga, commenced in 1886 and was burnt down in December 2011. The Crotty, Higginson, and Hore families ran the hotel over the years.The Bogong Hotel was 125 years old when it was burnt down in December 2011. It was the meeting place for locals of the Upper Kiewa Valley and was run by local families - the Crotty's, Higginson's and the Hore's. Vera Hore was born in 1909 and died in 2000 having run the pub for many years. This photograph shows the Orbost - Cunninghame coach leaving from outside Dickson's Hotel in Nicholson Street Orbost. Although noted as the Dickson Hotel, this may have been the Commonwealth Hotel which opened on New Year's Day 1902. Mr Jasper Drew held the first licence. Laura Dixon held the hotel licence from 04/04/10 until 05/02/17 and during that time it was known as Dickson's Hotel. A township, known as Cunninghame after a pioneer Gippsland squatter, was surveyed near Lake Bunga in 1866. The name changed to Lakes Entrance in 1915.This is a pictorial record of horse-drawn transport commonly used in Orbost, early 19th century. It also shows the Commonwealth Hotel before the second storey was added.A black / white photograph of a large single-storey building with a horse drawn coach and seneral people and horses standing nearby. "Congratulations ... and sincere thanks from the R.V.I.B. to the management and patrons of all hotels who contributed so magnificently in 1985. Fred Berry" Hotels were involved in fundraising for the RVIB through the placement of Lucky Envelopes machines. To honour this establishments and those which had raised the most funds, a poster was produced listing each hotel and the amount that was collected throughout 1985. The United Kingdom Hotel in Clifton Hill reached first place and a photograph of hotel management and RVIB staff was taken. The Keppels Australian Hotel was the first hotel to be opened in Marysville. The Keppel Family were among Marysville's earliest pioneering families. This photograph was taken by Nicholas John Caire. N.J. Caire had a great love for the area in and surrounding Marysville and in the late 1800's took many photographs of Marysville and its surrounds. N.J. Caire was born in 1837 in Guernsey. He arrived in Adelaide about 1860 along with his parents who encouraged his early interest in photography. He opened a studio in Adelaide in 1867 after traveling extensively throughout the Gippsland taking photographs. After marrying in 1870 he moved to Talbot in Victoria until 1876 when he opened a studio in the Royal Arcade in Melbourne. After 1885 N.J. Caire gave up his city work and made his home in South Yarra and devoted the rest of his life to outdoor photography, specializing in the bush, the gullies and the mountains of south-eastern Victoria.
