Photograph, Tyne Cot Cemetery, Passchedale. Photo L. Duhameeuw, Ypres, 1930
A photo of the Tyne Cot Cemetery in Passchendale dated September 24, 1930. It appears to be a professional photograph purchased as a souvenir. See also 01024 Menin Gate, Ypres, as it is by the same manufacturer. The Tyne Cot Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery and Memorial to the Missing is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) burial ground for the dead of the First World War in the Ypres Salient on the Western Front (source Wikipedia). The hand written inscription on the back of the photo says: "This memorial in Cemetery was built over a German dugout. 12,000 men are buried here. Stone wall at back has soldiers names engraved on same. Those unknown - words in stone 'Australian Soldier of the Great War Known unto God.' Australians captured Passchendale from the Germans Oct 4th 1917. Beautiful cemetery, all well kept, gardens, lawns, flowers. Ypres, Belgium Sept 24/30" The source of these photos is not known but they were stored together in the archives. The founders of Legacy were returned servicemen from the first world war and may have returned to France in the 1930s. Manufactured by L. Duhameeuw, Ypres. The professional photos from France imply that Legatees were making pilgrimages to the battlefields of France in the 1930s in memory of their comrades.Black and white photo of Tyne Cot Cemetery, Passchendale, France.Indistinct round stamp on the back and a handwritten message.world war one, souvenir, cemetery, memorial -

Postcard, Thoughts in Absence, c1917
Sometimes called a sweetheart postcard, it was a way of sending thoughts to the troops overseas. The poem on the front, with the image of a woman writing to her loved ones, says: "In distance we are far apart . . . / Yet loving thoughts can span the ocean blue / And warm good wishes sent in fond remembrance / Speed swiftly o'er the sea from me to you.' The British, Australian and French flags and Australia wattle provide more symbolism, the horseshoes for luck, and a hand shake. Was with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. There was a large collection of postcards so he may have been collecting them as souvenirs. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. His full war record is available from AWM. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving in Portsea in 1920.A record of correspondence with the troops in World War 1 and sending good wishes with a hamper. Uniform, Girls Uniform
A green tunic made for junior legatees to attend girls' classes. It is in great condition and is an excellent example of the uniforms used at Legacy classes. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. Melbourne Legacy would then conduct Annual Demonstrations to showcase their skills. Legacy provided uniforms free of charge for all girls attending the classes. Typical of the time the tunic appears hand made but many mothers and legatee wives would have been capable of making uniforms as they also made many of the costumes for the annual demonstrations. The tunic was donated back to Legacy from the family of Marjorie and Jacobina (Jackie) Bristol, sisters who were both junior legatees in the 1930s and 1940s after their father passed away, he was a World War 1 veteran. Jacobina later became Jackie Wood and passed away in April 2020. Marjorie became Marjorie Bachmann and passed away in 1986. Also donated were a photo of the girls at calisthenics classes, a junior legatee certificate, a souvenir handkerchief from the 90th anniversary celebrations and a $100 Legacy badge. These are catalogued separately at 01948 to 01952.A fantastic example of a uniform that was a symbol of membership of Legacy classes.A green cotton tunic with a Legacy emblem used by junior legatees used in Girls' Classes.Handwritten in blue pen '34' on the tag at the back.girls classes, uniform -

Document, Warrnambool calling, 1933
This is a souvenir of a ‘Back To’ celebration in Warrnambool in 1934. There had been a large-scale ‘Back To’ in Warrnambool in 1930, perhaps prompted by the growing interest in the history of the town ( this was evidenced in many country towns in Victoria at the time) and the need to gather together the remaining older local people as those regarded as pioneers of the district were fast dying out. In 1934 the State of Victoria was celebrating the centenary of the first permanent white settlement at Portland and many other places besides Melbourne took this opportunity to have a reunion of past and present citizens. Also Warrnambool had at the time two men very interested in the history of the settlement – Henri Worland and Patrick O’Grady and the first Warrnambool Historical Society was established the following year with Worland and O’Grady prominent in its establishment and Martin Carter on the first committee as well. Martin Carter, whose name appears on this envelope was the organizer of the 1934 reunion. The Carter family had long been established in Warrnambool as saddlers and Martin Carter was a Warrnambool Councillor from 1917 to 1925 and Mayor during three of those years. No information is available on the ‘Miss Adams ‘ in the address but ‘ R. F. Kennedy & Co.’ refers to the well-known pharmacy business in Timor Street Warrnambool. This envelope is of interest as a souvenir of a ‘Back To’ in Warrnambool in 1934. This is a small envelope with most of the back flap missing. The inside of the envelope has a blue lining. The envelope has a franked green Australian stamp and a Warrnambool Post Office stamp. A handwritten address is on the right side of the envelope. On the left side is a printed poster/advertisement in blue, black and grey colouring. The advertisement features an illustration of a woman speaking into a telephone with a coastal scene background. ‘Warrnambool Calling 1934 Come Home For a Week Jan 13 to Jan 21 Particulars M.L.Carter Warrnambool’ ‘Miss A. Programme - Document, programme, The Shrine Forecourt. Dedication by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, 1954
The order of service of the ceremony to dedicate the Shrine Forecourt by the Queen on 28 February 1954. It was the official commemorative document of the occasion. The Queen lit the Eternal Flame as part of the ceremony. The design of the Forecourt was part of a competition that was run to find a suitable memorial. The Forecourt is cross shaped. The Cenotaph is 65 feet high and rises as a focal point to the Forecourt, it is balanced on the other side by three 70 foot high flagstaffs. The sculpture at the top of the Centoph is "carved in Footscray basalt. It represents six men in battle dress of the Navy, Army and Air Services, carrying a bier on which lies the figure of a dead comrade draped with the national flag. Its simple symbolism harmonises with the great shrine itself and sums up with dramatic power the whole message of the monument - the debt of the living to the dead, the eternal bond between the fallen and those who enjoy the fruits of their sacrifice." Also from the souvenir booklet: "In front of the Cenotaph, surrounded by a protective railing, the Eternal Flame which burns continually in its great bronze bowl. The eternal flame is an ancient symbol signifying at times the continuing spirit of a city, at others the constancy of man to an ideal, and again as they symbol of continuing faith." Book - BASIL G WATSON: PIONEER AIRMAN, 1967
Basil Watson departed Melbourne on 24th January 1917, on the initial leg of Australia's first 'barnstorming' aviation tour, promoted by the entrepreneurs Albert Sculthorpe and R. Sissons. During the trip, which lasted over a month, Watson visited Warrnambool, Hamilton and Mount Gambier, before returning via stopovers at Casterton, Hamilton, Warrnambool and Camperdown. At each town he presented a public flying demonstration for crowds of spectators, featuring his usual aerobatic displays with feats such 'looping the loop', upside down flying, somersaulting and 'perpendicular nose dives', generating much amazement and admiration. The promoters had received approval from the Postmaster General's Department to carry an experimental airmail consignment on the return journey from Mount Gambier, and Watson landed in Albert Park on his arrival back in Melbourne on 27th February, carrying over 1,000 pieces of airmail collected from each of the towns on route. Much of the mail was in the form of official souvenir postcards commemorating the event, which were reposted on arrival to local addresses in Melbourne. Churchward, M. Souvenir ticket belongs to rear Mrs. A. Bolitho, 5 Webster Street, Bendigo, issued by Electric Supply Coy. Of Victoria Ltd., Bendigo Tramways. Railway Picnic September 16, 1905. The ticket belong to Mrs Bolitho's father, the late Mr J H P Ellis, who lived in McIntyre Street. Railway Picnic was also boronia time, Mr Bolton said - and bunches of fragrant West Australian borania were sold on the streets. Bolton Bros always printed the tram tickets in Bendigo in those early years. A report in the 'Bendigonian' of the 1903 Railway Picnic period told that 20 special trams came to Bendigo on Saturday morning, September 15, 1903. black and white photograph, first half 20th century
This photograph shows men working on cutting marble at South Buchan for Australia House in London. In the early 1900s black marble was being mined in the Bruthen district. Some was used for the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne and Australia House in London. 900 tonnes were shipped to London to be included in the construction of Australia House. DESCRIPTIONA paper covered booklet which is a pictorial souvenir Of Australia House in London. Pictures show Buchan marble features of the building.SIZE H-266mm W-192mm OBJECT REGISTRATION654KEYWORDSbuchan-marble australia-houseHISTORICAL INFORMATIONAustralia House is the oldest Australian diplomatic mission and it is the longest continuously occupied foreign mission in London. King George V laid the building’s first foundation stone in 1913 but it was not until August 1918 that he officially opened the completed building. The stringencies of World War I – principally shipping difficulties and labour shortages – had delayed construction considerably. Federation of the six Australian states formally took place on 1 January 1901 but it was not until 1906 that the Federal Government sent an Official Secretary to London to represent Australia. In the intervening years Australia was represented by State Agents-General, the first of whom was the Agent-General of Victoria. The building is significant for its unique design, Beaux Arts style and the materials used in its construction.Marble quarrying has been a significant part of the history of Buchan in East Gippsland. Its inclusion in Australia House in London and the shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne is noteworthy.A small black / white photograph of men in the background of a marble quarry. Tool - Shearing Handpiece, c.1890
Ford and McFarlane shearing handpiece c.1890. This shearing handpiece is from ‘Wellington Lodge” in Tailem Bend, South Australia. Wellington Lodge today is an Angus beef farm; however, the property has a long history which includes wool farming. Wellington Lodge has been in the McFarlane family since the 1840’s and was originally around 19000 acres. The donor, Brian Licence, assembled this handpiece out of spare parts he found while classing wool on the property in the 1960s. Brian showed the finished handpiece to the owners once his classing work was completed and was told he could keep the handpiece as a souvenir. Brian also classed wool at “Jockwar” and “Pleasant Park” in Penola for members of the McFarlane family during the 1960s. The handpiece is named after Ford, the name of the engineer who designed the handpiece and McFarlane, the owners of Wellington Lodge Station and employers of Ford. This handpiece was developed as a prototype for use on the property. The handpiece which is made of solid brass is in a “used condition” and has been patched with solder. The handpiece is stamped with the number 10. Internally, the handpiece is powered from a drive mechanism of compressed air, this compressed air was typically produced by burning mutton fat. The handpiece comes from the pre-electrical– steam engine era of shearing. Brass metal shearing handpiece. A three-pronged fitting to hold both the comb and the blade protrudes from one end. A cylindrical stem extends vertically from the other. This is likely where a connecting rod to the shearing plant would be found. Below this vertical stem, the handpiece has an additional threaded hose fitting. This is likely where compressed air was delivered into the handpiece. The inscriptions can be found on the rear, near the previously mentioned vertical stem. Around this stem is also where the repairs of solder can be found. These repairs are unique to this handpiece and are not common practise.Etched. Base of handle. “FORD & McFARLANE . SHEEP SHEARER . Etched. Photograph, Girls Legacy Classes
A black and white photo of the girls' classes at Legacy House in the late 1940s being addressed by a Legatee. It was used in the publication to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Legacy in 1948 (see item 00939). The girls are wearing their cotton tunics that were provided by Legacy for each girl in the classes. They appear slightly different colours in the photo - only green ones are currently held in the Legacy collection. The girls appear to be listening to a Legatee and the blackboard behind them says 'A Merry Xmas to all' so it appears to be taken in December. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. Melbourne Legacy held Annual Demonstrations to showcase their skills. The photo was donated to Legacy from the family of Marjorie and Jacobina (Jackie) Bristol, sisters who were both junior legatees in the 1930s and 1940s after their father passed away, he was a World War 1 veteran. Photograph - Bones Day - Army Survey Regiment Versus RAAF School of Radio, 1969
These two photographs were taken at Bones Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the RAAF School of Radio in 1969. The two units took turns each year to host the event and on this occasion was held at the RAAF School of Radio, Laverton. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash, softball, tennis, touch football, rifle shooting, tug-of-war and volleyball. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous. The history of the Bones Day competition is best described in the booklet titled - Bones of Contention Souvenir Program. 1965. Refer to Item 6267. The winner of the two trophies in 1969 is not known. MAJ Donald Ridge was probably on this occasion was the 2IC of the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, He was subsequently promoted to the rank of LTCOL was the CO of the unit from 1972 to 1973; and continued as the CO of the renamed Army Survey Regiment from 1974 to 1975. Domestic object - China crockery recovered from wreck of Light of the age
Subsequent to the wrecking of the Light of the Age marine concretions and corrosion products formed a cement capping over the cargo, stabilising and protecting it. The site of the Light of the Age was found by divers in late 1960s, and soon became a popular diving site. Huge amounts of intact crockery were removed from the wreck by boatloads of divers, including distinctive brown glazed teapots with legs (one diving author named it 'the Teapot Wreck' (Denmead, 1973: 78-82), 'Greek Key' patterned transferware, Cooper & Wood Portobello black glass three piece bottles, and sauce, preserve and condiment bottles often with contents (gooseberries, raspberries, olives) and seals intact. Larger items including a signal cannon and an anchor were removed from the site, while divers seeking souvenirs commonly used cold chisels to chip objects free of the concretion 'cap' which had stabilised and protected the remaining cargo for so long. In 1982 this situation was drastically changed when someone used explosives to further break concretions. However the charge was too powerful resulting in the site's complete destruction and the remaining items to become scattered and broken. Abraded and worn ceramic objects washed up on the beach are invariably collected by beachgoers, including fragments of crockery, figurines and animal figures used for 19th century household decoration and toys. The Light of the Age is archaeologically significant as the wreck of an international immigrant ship with an inward bound cargo. It is historically significant for its association with both the Black Ball and White Star Lines which carried thousands of immigrants to Australia. Built in 1855 and lost on 16 January 1868 now lies at Point Lonsdale Beach, half a mile west from Point Lonsdale, Port Phillip Heads.01- 1 shallow bowl, 02- 1 sweet bowl, 03- 1 willow pattern service dish, 04- 2 ladle cups [no handles], 05 06- 2 egg cups, 07- 2 bread and butter plates, 08- 1 condiment bowl lidWedgwood deep saucer; Pearl stone china, Ribbon, Wedgewood Willow Pattern service dish, Staffordshire Stone China, Fenton, No10shipwrecks, salvage, crockery, light of the age, clippers -

One photo from an album belonging to JB McLean, of his voyage home from World War 1 in 1920 on the Ceramic. The photo shows the Kantara Military Camp in Egypt showing canvas tents. The Ceramic departed Tillbury, UK 12th March and docked in Freemantle on 27th April 1920 and then went onto Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. The Ceramic was a transport vessel built in Belfast in 1913 for the White Star Line to transport frozen produce and apples from Australia to UK. It was taken over by the Australian Government for troop transport in October 1914 and could carry over 3,000 troops. This trip in 1920 there were 1467 on board, there were women and children as well as 439 soldiers returning home, one of whom was John 'Basil' McLean. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving Portsea in 1920.A collection of items from John Basil McLean is in the archive.
