19th century Irish linen Christening gown and matching petticoat donated by Ruth Starkey. The Christening gown and petticoat have been in the family for around 170 years, passed to generations. They were sewn by Eliza Lynon in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland. The following history has been provided by Ruth Starkey: • Town of origin is Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, sewn by Eliza Lynon. • The gown came to Australia with Eliza Lynon on the Red Jacket in 1855. • Eliza married Joseph Dobbyn (who was a member of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers Regiment) at Christ Church Geelong. • They built a home at 150 McKillop St, Geelong. The 'Memorial Plaque', colloquially often known as the 'Dead Man's Penny' or the 'Widows Penny', is a bronze memorial plaque issued after World War I to the next-of-kin of British Empire service personnel killed in the war. Around 1.35 million were produced. They were treasured by some as a tangible memorial, while others thought that they did not reflect the magnitude of the loss that so many families suffered. Such was the depth of feeling that many were returned. This one was issued to John Thomas Greenwood, who was born in 1898 in London, and emigrated to Australia in 1911, aged around thirteen. He was a resident of Williamstown before he enlisted on 8 June 1917, and was assigned firstly to the 58th Battalion, 9th Reinforcement, and then was reassigned to the 39th Battalion. He boarded the HMAT 'Port Melbourne' for England on 16 July 1917. John’s father William Greenwood also joined up, on the same day as William. After training John was sent ‘on strength’ to France where he joined the 39th Battalion on 23 February 1918. They were about to fight the German ‘Spring Offensive’, the Germany’s last attempt at victory. Unfortunately, two months later John became seriously ill and subsequently died of TB and meningitis on the 12 April 1918, at the age of 20. It features in relief a large depiction of Britannia, holding a triton and flanked by two small dolphins, with a lion in the foreground. The name of the deceased is in a rectangle. On the lower portion of the plaque is a depiction of a lion cub attacking an eagle. This table runner was made by Corporal Herbert Burdekin during the First World War around 1916 while he was recovering from a bullet wound. Herbert joined the 8th (Reserve) Battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment (Leeds Rifles) in November 1914 and was deployed to France in April 1915. In July 1916 he received a gunshot wound to the arm and was sent home to England to recover, during which time he crocheted this table runner. He returned to France in early 1917 and was wounded a second time by a gas shell on 23 July 1917. Herbert likely never fully recovered from his exposure to gas during the war. He received a medical discharge in November 1918 due to "debility caused by war service" and died only a few years later in 1922, aged 26. Collection of personal effects that belonged to Private SIdney Spencer Plum, 3431 1st Pioneer Battalion. SIdney was born on 3/1/1894 at Dockers Plains via Wangaratta. He attended both North Wangaratta and Dockers Plains schools. He was a Blacksmith aged 21 years when he enlisted on 12/6/1915 and embarked on 11/10/1915 on board HMAT Nestor. He was wounded three times and was discharged from the AIF on 16/3/1919. This memorial plaque known as the "Death Penny" was issued to James Kenny on the death of his son Jep Francis Kenny 3041 Born at Thoona the family moved to Peechelba. At the age of 18 1/2 he enlisted on 16/7/1915 at Yarrawonga and assigned to the 6th Battalion. He embarked overseas on 29/9/1919 and transferred to the 57th Battalion on 15/3/1916. Norman Gordon McNicol was a frontline Australian infantry officer and author. He enlisted on 27/1/1916 in Melbourne as Private 1109 to the 37th Battalion. Embarked overseas on 3/6/1916 and promoted to Lieutenant on 17/1/1917. He was wounded in France on 12/10/1917 and awarded the Military Cross on 3/6/1918. On 10/8/1918 during the Battle of Amiens he sustained a gunshot wound to the foot in the attack at Proyart. He was evacuated and return to Australia on 27/5/1919. McNicol is best known for writing The History of the 37th Battalion AIF, which details the unit's campaigns in Belgium and France during World War I. This book is a limited edition of 200 copies first published in 1936. Book contains 354 pages and includes maps and photographs. Jenny Rowe says: This piece was inspired by some hand dyed threads, interesting fabrics and a piece called Soleil Rouge by Celcile Meraglia which I saw on Pinterest. I began by ironing various size circles and ovals on to the silk dupion backing. I then drew the lines that surround them and divided the spaces. These were worked by couching various threads and tapes, loads o chain stitch (my favourite) whipped, laced, over worked with running stitch in a contrasting colour or with buttonhole stitch worked into the side. Stitches used for the circles and filling include - fly , lazy daisy, Chinese and French knots, raised chain bands, up and down buttonhole, spider web, herringbone, feather, Palestrina, Roumanian and seed stitches. I used these as the whim took me and I kept going back and forth adding layers until I just had to say STOP! Finally I added a few cogs in a nod to steam punk, one of my favourite styles. It was a wonderful piece to use many different stitches and all those lovely threads in your stash. I had tremendous fun stitching this. This postcard was with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. Possibly these were with him during his time in the First World War and kept them as a mementos. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving in Portsea in 1920. A wartime letter written by Arthur Evans that was later mounted on card for display purposes. It was donated to Legacy in 1998. The letter was written on the fabric of an aircraft wing. The letter was written by Arthur Stanley Evans while convalescing in Briston in 1917. He had been injured at Bullecourt, France with the 18th-16th AIF.
