Photograph - Photograph - Colour, Churchill Service Memorial, 2015
In recognition of its fallen soldiers and Churchill's 50th birthday a service memorial was erected on a concrete plinth at the Churchill town plaza and used for the first time to mark the ANZAC centenary on Anzac Day 2015. Churchill never had a war memorial and received a grant from the Department of Veterans' Affairs six years ago to commission a sculpture with Latrobe City Council's support. It was decided the sculpture needed to recognise more than just the war effort, but service and volunteerism, considering Churchill was only founded in 1965. (http://www.latrobevalleyexpress.com.au/story/2816903/churchills-new-memorial/, accessed 01 may 2015) Sculptor Paul Jesse discussed the work in Churchill and District Community news, 18 December 2014: Some time ago CDCA commissioned a sculpture to be used as a Service Memorial to commemorate the fallen that have died in service of our community and country. Traditional memorials usually commemorate Armed Services personnel, but CDCA was of the opinion that a more inclusive view which included Emergency Services personnel, such as CFA, SES and Police, could be incorporated into the Churchill Memorial. Boolarra artist, Paul Jesse, who is accomplished in Ferro-Cement sculpture techniques, was commissioned to create a memorial that would cause people to reflect on the meaning of ‘service’ and ‘sacrifice’. The following is a description of the Churchill Service Memorial Sculpture written by the sculptor, Paul Jesse. “My sculpture is different from most War Memorial sculptures because it uses as its basis the reasons why people go into service or to war. One side of the sculpture is colourful and optimistic; its theme is home, family, community and the future. These themes are crafted by flow lines which are connected to the other side of the sculpture through the round hole and the Crosspiece. These lines can be seen as a multi-layered connection between the sides. On the “dark” side of the sculpture, the lines begin with a spiral of coloured mosaics. This spiral is representative of our service people. Its beginning can be seen on one level as their soul. The spiralling mosaics of them flow to the other side of the sculpture where they create the landscape and figures. These lines can also be seen as a range of connectors between the two sides, representing a flow of thoughts, love, fear, concern and dreams. They also represent physical communication such as letters and phone calls.” This ‘Service Memorial’ is located in the Churchill Plaza (adjacent to the Town Hall), along with four flagpoles, seating and garden beds. The Churchill Service Memorial has deliberately been designed as a thought-provoking public art work. It will complement the Art and Culture Pathway which links Switchback Gallery at the Federation University Campus to the Town Centre. We hope Churchill citizens will pause to view the Memorial, ponder its meaning, reflect on the service of others and commemorate the fallen. Colour photograph on an abstract Australia-shaped sculpture by Boolarra artist Paul Jesse. The abstract Australia-shaped sculpture is in stark contrast to the bronze-cast "fallen mate" or concrete cenotaph seen in many country towns. The photograph includes wreaths from the ANZAC centenary service on ANZAC Day 2015. churchill, churchill war memorial, paul jessie, anzac centenary, federation university, gippsland, art and culture pathway, world war -

Ceramic - Ceramics, Ceramic Sugar bowl by Wartook Pottery, c1990
Graham WOOD Wartook Pottery was set up in the early 70s by Graham Wood, and was sucessful for nearly 25 years. It then moved to Halls Gap (The Grampians, Victoria), and the name was changed to Jimmy's Creek Pottery in 1998. The pottery conitnued under that name until 2003. when cheap imports hurt the business. Hand thrown ceramic bowl with 'Gum Leaf' design and the word 'sugar'. According to decorator Wendy McGuiness all decoration was made and applied by hand - an extremely time consuming activity. Texture to the body of each piece was created by using a piece of coral. Tenmoku glaze was applied to the top of the pieces, with iron oxide to the main body. This was the first of the Wartook range that sold commercially from around 1987 all over Australia. At the height of production Wartook Pottery had 5 employees, including a new wheel potter (who was adept at creating the pieces as Graham had done before). Additional ranges were still hand thrown, but with a floral wreath (slip cast) applied to the top of each pot, as well as a range that used decals for decoration. australian landscape pottery, les macleman, ceramics, landscape, graham wood -

Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village
Weapon - Cannon, mid to late 19th century
The history of the Thunderchild gun is not known. It was presumably manufactured in Torquay in the second half of the 19th century. Such guns were often attached to a ship’s rail through the holes in the swivel base, as in the base of this gun. The guns fired grapeshot and were originally used on ships to repel boarders. They were also used to launch whaling harpoons and were sometimes employed for signalling. The relatively late date makes the latter application most likely. This Thunderchild gun is complete with ramrod and wad remover. It is in good working order and easily assembled. It is used locally for special ceremonies and for Whaleboat Races as a starting gun. (Guns and Cannon, South Wester Victoria, May 2008, ref W/F/03) The small bore cannon is part of a collection of nineteenth century Flagstaff Hill Guns and Cannon, which is classified as being a high level of significance, on State, National and World The nineteenth century artillery pieces are a very rare and representative collection of artillery of this era. The artillery pieces, individually and as a collection, are highly significant for historical, scientific and aesthetic reasons at the state, national and world levels. The artillery pieces are excellent examples of nineteenth century artillery designed for the shore defence of western Victoria in the mid to late 1800s. The collection demonstrates the system of nineteenth century Imperial Defence implemented by Britain and of the recycling of obsolete technology to the colonies by Britain. The collection represents the methods of artillery technology, its advancement and its modifications in order to remain active. It also illustrates the transference of defence technology from Britain to Australia and demonstrates the level of reliance Australia had on British defence equipment. The artillery pieces form prominent elements in their landscapes and, together with the batteries and sites in which they are located, create a strong visual link to the region’s defence history. Importantly the artillery pieces, individually and as a collection, represent a very rare and intact group of nineteenth century artillery. Very few examples of nineteenth century artillery have survived worldwide, the largest collections being sited in Canada. The collection is a rare collection of artillery which demonstrates the advancements made in artillery technology during the nineteenth century, and is one of the largest collections of nineteenth century artillery in Australia. Further, the collection is extremely intact, with most pieces retaining original carriages and many located within their original emplacement. This collection of artillery, with their carriages and in their locations, are of exceptional national significance as they represent the largest intact collection of artillery within a single defensive network, outside of major colonial ports. The collection of nineteenth century carriages and slides are in themselves an extremely rare and important collection, however their significance is enhanced by their placements within batteries and with guns. (Conservation Management Plan for Victorian Guns and Cannon, South Western Victoria, May 2008) Cannon; small 1pdr cast iron, smooth bore muzzle loading swivel gun, painted glass black. 19th century cannon has polished wood handle, two detachable metal stirrups and metal swivel base with cuff, attached to block of wood by four bolts. In 1889 the three central fire brigades of Bendigo were amalgamated and a new fire station was erected in View Street (the third to be built on this site). This two storied brick building designed by Wm. Beebe forms an integral past of the View Street landscape. The red brick, white plaster relief trimmings and window frames with greenish lead-light decoration, all reflect the late Victorian style of the building. The ground floor contained an engine station and call room with stalls to accomodate three horses immediately behind. Upstairs in the main building is a handsome drill hall.Series of letters between Miss Starke and Miss Mathison re classification of the building by the National Trust; Letter to the Country Fire Authority (CFA) re classification; Media Release; National Trust data survey form; two photos of the fire stationhistory, national trust bendigo collection, bendigo, bendigo fire station -

Decorative object - Ceramic platter, Bendigo Pottery, Strathfieldsaye Shire 1866 - 1991, 1991
Graham Masters is a potter based at Sweenies Creek, just outside Bendigo, Victoria who specialises in a patented technique of low relief stoneware depicting Australian animals and landscapes. He obtained a Diploma of Art and Design in Ceramics from the Bendigo Institute of Technology in 1973, then operated a pottery for a year in Bendigo, before becoming an employee, then a partner at Maldon Pottery, Victoria with Neville Wilson and Thomas Metcalf. He left Maldon to set up his own pottery at Sweenies Creek in 1984. (1.) (Judith Pearce). Built in 1869, the (former) Strathfieldsaye Shire Hall is one of The City of Bendigo's earliest surviving public buildings. Designed by George Steane and built by George Pallett in 1869 the Strathfieldsaye Shire Hall has aesthetic significance as a purpose built Shire Hall designed in the Free Classical manner. It is also of importance as an early example of the novel system of cavity wall construction. The building is largely intact and unaltered. Other important elements include the arched portico of the main entrance with brick arched features on either side; the brick quoining and dressings to the round arch windows; the three gabled roof; and the matching chimneys that reinforce the symmetrical design. The Hall has social significance as a temporary schooling facility in the 1870s and as a flood refuge in 1889. The Strathfieldsaye Shire Hall is a brick building designed in the Free Classical manner. This style was favoured by the Public Works Department for a number of public buildings including Shire Halls and courthouses. The form includes a central taller volume flanked by matching smaller gables. In the case of the Shire Hall these would be occupied by the Shire Secretary and Shire Engineer whilst the larger volume was the council chamber. The portico at the front is designed with a flat arch in the centre and matching smaller arches each side. The face red brick is unadorned apart from a plain string course at the roof springing point, brick quoining and dressings to the round arch windows. There are matching chimneys that are located to reinforce the symmetrical design and the original roof is believed to have been slate but is now corrugated iron. Large wheel thrown ceramic platter with a shallow well, broad flaring ledge and raised on a high foot rim. Rim decorated with slab rolled gum trees protruding on centre left and right sides of plater. which reflect the low relief image of trees and the Strathfieldsaye Shire Hall on the surface of the plate. Glazed with golden brown and cream. Front centre top; 'Shire of Strathfieldsaye'. Front lower centre '1866 - 1991 - 125 Years'. Signed 'G Master / 1991' on rim centre right. Reverse; signed 'G Master' / 1991. Bendigo Pottery stamp.shire of strathfieldsaye, bendigo pottery -
