The building and the organ were seriously damaged by fire on 1 April 1970, started by a painter's blowtorch. This plan of town allotments in Lerderderg Street and Bennett Street also includes the location of many of the buildings, shops, businesses and houses which were present in the retail and business area of Bacchus Marsh in the 1890s. The precise date of the plan is not known but it must be sometime between 1891 and 1897. The Post Office and the Wesleyan Church are both shown on this plan. Both of these were constructed in 1890. The plan does not show the Baptist Church in Main Street which was constructed in 1898. Hence the date is sometime between 1891 and 1897.This plan of Bacchus Marsh is one of the most detailed visual representations of the location of shops, businesses and houses in the central part of Bacchus Marsh. It provides very precise locations of most of the shops and houses in the town in the 1890s. A single page paper plan showing allotments of land fronting Lerderderg and Bennett Street. Buildings, businesses and houses along most of the streets are identified by hand written annotations. Streets identified on plan: Lerderderg Street - Bennett Street - Main Street - Gell Street - Young Street - Graham Street. Fanny Swan (formerly Wood, nee Poole) came to Gippsland in the 1840s with her first husband, William Wood, where they became proprietors of the Shakespeare Hotel at Stratford. William Wood died in 1855, and in 1856 she married Samuel Swan. Together they acquired considerable property in and around Stratford. Samuel Swan died in 1880 at Stratford, and Fanny Swan died at Stratford in 1895.This illuminated address which documents the final payment for the Wesleyan Church building in 1892 has historic significance for Stratford Historical Society as it is located in the actual building. It also has social significance for the township as Mrs Fanny Swan was one of the earliest and best known business leaders in the area running the iconic Shakespeare hotel/boarding house for many years. It has aesthetic significance as an example of a illuminated address produced on a printing press with gold ink, rather than the usual handwritten form. This item has come from funeral directors Beattie and Phillips who have operated as funeral directors in Warrnambool since 1865 when Christopher Beattie and Henry Phillips commenced their business. They operated as partners until Henry died in 1896. Christopher continued until his death in 1916 when the business passed to his son Christopher who operated the business until 1945 when it was transferred to James J Leahy. The business was next to the Wesleyan church in Koroit St. Early advertisements cite the latest in services, vehicles and horses. This cloth could have been used to drape over coffins or seats. The society also has recently acquired a top hat worn by these funeral directors. Tait collection: item 57 of 62 This document gives details of the Will and Probate of Thomas Sleeman, a Nirranda farmer. He died in 1900 at the age of 85 and left real estate to the value of £600. The main beneficiaries were his sons and £30 was left to Mary Le Couteur, his daughter. He also bequeathed to the Wesleyan Church the half acre of land that the church was on at that time (presumably in the Nirranda district). The document has been drawn up by the law firm of O’Mahony and Murray which operated in Warrnambool early in the 20th century. The document has been passed down to successive lawyers occupying the legal premises in Kepler Street and located there in 2014 in the same building, the premises last occupied by the law firm of Mackay Taylor. This document is of some interest as it gives details of the Will and Probate of Thomas Sleeman, a farmer from Nirranda.This is a piece of white paper folded in two to make four pages. Three of the pages are ruled with blue lines and have margins ruled in blue. There is handwritten material on three pages. A seal of the Supreme Court of Victoria is attached with green ribbon and there are nine red stamps of the Master in Equity of the Supreme Court and one purple stamp of the Savings Bank (Head Office). The document is a little stained and the writing is fading but legible. The document gives details of the Will and Probate of the Nirranda farmer, Thomas Sleeman who died in September 1900. This Almanac was published by the Warrnambool Advertiser in 1873. The Warrnambool Advertiser was first published in 1868 by the Warrnambool Newspaper Company with James Hider as chairman. The first editor and publisher was Frank Davis who was succeeded in these positions in January 1870 by Daniel Harrison and Daniel George. The plant and goodwill was sold in May1874 to Fairfax and Laurie, the proprietors of the Warrnambool Standard. The owner of this booklet was Christopher Beattie who came to Warrnambool in 1853 and founded, with Henry Phillips, the undertaking firm of Beattie & Phillips in 1865. Beattie was heavily involved in community affairs in Warrnambool - the Fire Brigade, the Building Society, the Mechanics' Institute, the Manchester Unity Lodge and the Wesleyan Church. Several pages of the booklet have personal notes written by Beattie. The booklet remained in the possession of J J Leahy, the successor to Beattie & Phillips in the Fairy Street undertaking business.This booklet is of major importance as it is an original Warrnambool Advertiser Almanac of 1873. This Almanac was published two years before the Warrnambool Standard Almanacs were issued (1875-1930) and thus it contains information not available elsewhere. The association with Christopher Beattie of the firm Beattie & Phillips and the Beattie handwritten material are also of major interest to local historians.This is a booklet of 47 pages, the Warrnambool Advertiser Almanac of 1873. Some of the first and end pages are missing and some of the inside pages are torn or partly missing. Some of the end pages are loose. The booklet contains a monthly calendar with historical dates from Australia and overseas, Town and District Directories of people living in the Warrnambool area, general information on organisations and businesses in Warrnambool and the surrounding district and postal information. It also has many local Warrnambool and district advertisements, some with black and white sketches. There are also several pages with comments handwritten by Christopher Beattie. This is a programme, produced in-house for the Annual Display in 1955 of the Warrnambool Wesley Girls’ Gymnasium Club. It shows that the instructress was Mrs V. Last and the pianist, Mrs B. Utting. There were 29 items in the display with the performers in various age groups. Gymnasium Clubs for both boys and girls, organized by the Warrnambool Methodist Church, were well-established in Warrnambool in the 1930s. It is not known when these clubs ceased to operate but church youth clubs of various kinds continue to operate and gymnastic exercises of some sort would still be one of their activities. The first Wesleyan church service was held in Warrnambool in 1847 and the first chapel was opened in 1851. By the early 1900s the church was known as the Methodist Church and in 1977 after a merger with some other Protestant Churches the church today is known as the Uniting Church with the Warrnambool Uniting Church now located in Koroit Street. This programme is of interest as an example of the type of recreational activity sponsored by churches in the 1950s in Warrnambool. Gymnastic Clubs continue to be a popular activity for youth. ‘Dawnings of Genius’ by the Rev. Theodore Alois Buckley contains chapters on the lives the many distinguished men in history. Our copy of this work was given to Jane McMeekin as a prize at the Koroit Street School some time in the 1870s. The Koroit Street School was a Denominational Board School opened by the Wesleyan Church in 1859 with William Nettleton as the Head Teacher. It was later known as Common School No. 673 and closed in 1876 when the Warrnambool State School in Jamieson Street was opened. There is no date to tell us when Jane McMeekin received this book but we know that Caleb Collyer, who married Ann Brown in 1869, was Head Teacher of Warrnambool Common School No. 673 in 1875. Jane Taggart McMeekin was born in Mepunga in 1864 to John and Isabella McMeekin. She may have been about ten or eleven when she received this prize. This book is of considerable interest as it was a school prize in the 1870s and concerns Jane McMeekin, Caleb Collyer and Common School No. 673 – all of relevance and importance in the history of education in Warrnambool.This is a hard cover book of 408 pages. It has a dark red leather cover with gold and black ornamentation and red lettering on a gold background. It has an introduction and thirty chapters on the lives of eminent men. It has many black and white illustrations. The cover is torn in places and somewhat stained and ragged around the edges. At some stage the colourfully decorated façade pipes were repainted in a gold finish.
