Christ Church Warrnambool was one of the first hosts of the scouting movement in Warrnambool and in 1909 a bivouac was held in the church grounds under Scoutmaster Jones. It became a boys club in 1920 but the scouts were reformed in 1926, the date of this certificate. F Petterd is the name on the certificate.A record from one of the earliest times of the scout movement in Warrnambool. Rectangular light card certificate coloured in orange and blue. The home of Mr & Mrs Peake was situated in Whitehorse Road, Mitcham. The Peake and Cox timber yard was on the opposite side of the road. Ronald Peake, the only son of Mr and Mrs Peake was killed in the Second World War. Original Vicarage 30 Seaby Street c1863. Used by the Anglican Church until 1923 when it was sold. This house is one of the oldest in Stawell. It was built in 1863 as the residence of the Church of England Vicar. Separate to the original Vicarage the Christ Church of England was built on the hill opposite in the same year. Many couples were married in the Drawing Room of the vicarage as was the custom at the time. In 1872, 9 years later a new church called Holy Trinity Church of England was built in Main St. Stawell to replace Christ Church which had become too small and too far from the main population. The Vicarage remained until 1922 when the house next door to Holy Trinity Church was purchased as the new Vicar's residence. Black and white photograph of a brick home with cement render. The bells were sent to the Melbourne Exhibition of 1881. They were awarded first prize. Guaranteed to chime to the sixteenth of a tone. Owen Loftus and his mother lived in this house in the 1930's. Owen was a postman and also ran a taxi service.He died in the second World War and is remembered in the memorial window at Christ Church, Mitcham. Present owners (1998) are Anna and Gorden Seward. The previous owners were the Rev and Mrs Barnsley, a retired Church of England vicar. The Worland family has played a significant role in the life of the parish for many generations. James (church warden) and Elizabeth Worland had 10 children and at least 3 sons went on to become very involved in the church, holding some form of office. Henri became Town Clerk of Warrnambool, others involved in their own business in Warrnambool. Ernest Thomas Worland the 4th child, born at Portland on Sept 30th 1877, but lived most of his life in Warrnambool. He became a church warden in 1926 and remained so for approx. 40 years and vicar's warden for approx 15 years. Ernest married Margaret White in May 1902 and they had 6 children. Ernest worked in his father's tannery and took over the business on his father's death in 1918. His trade was listed as a 'currier'. He later turned to dairying when the business was destroyed by fire. Ernest and his wife lived on the corner of Henna and Lave Sts for over 40 years. His main interest was in Christ Church. Ernest died on 27th December 1963 aged 86 years and is buried in the Warrnambool Cemetery. His wife Margaret died on 2nd December 1967 aged 92 years. On his death the Vicar of Christ Church, Rev Gordon Brown, said "Mr. Worland had an outstanding record of service with Christ Church, Warrnambool. He was utterly devoted to his church and served with distinction as vestryman, church warden, vicar's warden and synod representative." Robin Boyd developed a close friendship with the founder of the Bauhaus in Weimar Germany, Walter Gropius, who had moved to the USA in the 1930s. Through this connection, Boyd was invited to be the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Bemis Professor at the School in the North American academic year 1956-7. Robin and Patricia Boyd, with their youngest daughter Suzy, were based in Cambridge, Massachusetts for the year. Boyd gave some lectures at MIT and he was also invited to give lectures at many other universities, allowing him to travel widely within the USA, especially on the East Coast. This gave him the opportunity to meet architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero Saarinen, Paul Rudolph and many others, and visit the offices of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, and places like Taliesin and the General Motors Technical Center Detroit. This certificate was issued to the First Warrnambool Scout Troop in January 1914 for gaining third prize in Fire Lighting and Billy Boiling at the First Australasian Rally of the Boy Scouts Association held in Melbourne. The Warrnambool Troop was founded by Evan Jones, a local stonemason and the Rev. Norman Crawford, the curate at Christ Church Warrnambool. The exact date is not known but it would have been some time between 1907 and 1913. Today there are two scouting troops for boys in Warrnambool, the Warrnambool Tooram Troop and the Warrnambool Norfolk Troop. This certificate is of considerable interest as it is a very early memento of the Boy Scout movement in Warrnambool.This is a certificate mounted on cardboard. The certificate is white with a black scroll edging. It has an image of a Boy Scout with black printing and handwriting in black ink (now fading). This album contains photographs of many Warrnambool buildings and scenes, including Proudfoot Boatsheds, St. John’s Church, Christ Church, Shelly Beach, Hopkins Falls, Sherwood gardens and buildings, Ozone Coffee Palace, Kepler Street, Sandstone Quarries and the Titan Crane on the Breakwater. The photographs have been taken and put in album form by the photographer Joseph Jordan. The advertisements of the hotels on the inside covers place the publication of the album to the years1891-2. We have another album similar to this but there are six photographs in this album (VC000799) that are not in the other album. These extra photographs are of the original gardens and buildings of Sherwood.This is a most important album as the photographs are clear and show a good cross-section of Warrnambool in the early 1890s. Some of the photographs are not represented in other collections (eg Sherwood gardens) and so are of vital historical significance. The advertisements are also of great use to researchers.This album has a brown hard cover and contains three pages of local advertisements and sixteen pages of photographs and 32 photographs back to back. The pages have been bound but some pages have come loose. There is a fold-out section of a 180 degree panorama of Warrnambool taken from Liebig Street hill. Frances Rigg was a local business identity in Kew, at one stage managing the local branch of the English, Scottish and Australian (ES&A) Bank at 175 High Street from c. 1920 until the 1940s. After Francis Rigg’s death, the collection of buttons and medallions was inherited by his son, Ken Rigg (1922-2014). The collection was subsequently donated to the Kew Historical Society in 2015 by Francis' grandson, Adrian Rigg, at the time of the Gallipoli & Beyond Commemoration in 2015. The collection covers a period of almost 40 years. The majority of the buttons are patriotic buttons, issued and sold during and immediately after the First World World War (1914-1918) to raise funds for national and overseas causes. The collection also includes a number of locally significant sporting event buttons and sporting club medallions, issued in the 1920s and 1930s.Patriotic and other pressed tin buttons and badges were produced in large numbers in the first decades of the twentieth century. By nature, insubstantial and ephemeral, they have not always survived. The collections of badges, buttons and medallions in the Kew Historical Society collection is homogenous and yet diverse, ranging from buttons sold to raise funds for the war efforts in 1914-18 and 1939-45, to those used at festivals and sporting events. Because of the manufacturing process, many surviving buttons and badges have been affected by inadequate storage, suffering from oxidisation and physical damage. These survivors are now historically and socially significant artefacts, revealing much about the attitudes and values of the period in which they were produced. Their widespread distribution means that they are frequently significant at a local, state, national and international level.A small white yellow and blue fundraising (sic) button with the initials or logo of ‘CE’ in the centre. Robert Edward Davies CBE (30 July 1913 – 17 May 2002) was the Anglican Bishop of Tasmania from 1963 to 1981. Educated at Queensland University, he was ordained in 1937 and began his career as an assistant priest at Christ Church Cathedral, Newcastle, NSW. After World War II service as a chaplain with Toc H and the Royal Australian Air Force he became Warden of St John’s College Brisbane. After this he was Archdeacon of Canberra, then Wagga Wagga. He became an assistant bishop of Newcastle and Warden of St John’s Theological College, Morpeth in 1960 and three years later the Tasmanian diocesan bishop. This book is very important as it gives a comprehensive coverage of the people from Warrnambool and district who enlisted in World War One. It is an essential reference for researchers of those times and for family history recorders. This is a soft-cover book of 270 pages. It is the 2016 second edition of the book by Blair & Affleck of Great War Enlistments from Warrnambool and District. Samuel McGeorge was born in Belfast, Ireland in 1850. He was trained for the ministry at Moore College, Sydney. He was Vicar in Ararat for 10 years prior to coming to Warrnambool in 1899, to become the 3rd Vicar of the Parish. He was inducted on June 1st by Bishop Cooper. He showed a deep regard for the welfare and happiness of his parishioners. Christ Church progressed well under his charge. He suffered a very painful and distressing illness which forced him to obtain leave of absence from his clerical duties, but he continued to visit and encourage the sick and sorrowing. On December 4th 1904, Canon McGeorge opened the new Church and Sunday School in Koroit St, East Warrnambool, of which he had established. It was opened as a Mission Hall. It was to become St. George's and the first recorded service was on February 11th 1906. He preached his last sermon at Christ Church on Dec 4th before illness prevented him performing his duties. He resigned from the Vicariate shortly before his death in Warrnambool on December 16th, 1905. The stained glass window in the north wall of the second nave was a gift of many parishioners. Depicting St. Michael, it was erected in memory of Rev Canon McGeorge, and was unveiled by Dean Parkyn on December 23rd, 1906. His widow Mrs Emma McGeorge, remained an active church worker until her death in 1933. This book belonged to Evan Jones, a plasterer and stone mason from Warrnambool (born 1865). He and the Rev. Norman Crawford, the Curate at Christ Church, Warrnambool, began the first Boy Scout group in Warrnambool, the 1st Warrnambool Troop. When Baden Powell, the founder of the Boy Scout movement, visited Melbourne he presented Evan Jones with his scouting medal. The Boy Scout movement has been active in Warrnambool for over 100 years and currently there are two troops operating in the city - Warrnambool Tooram Scouts and Warrnambool Norfolk Scouts Evan Jones was also a Sergeant in the Warrnambool Garrison Artillery (a Volunteer Corps) and this partly explains his ownership of this book and his interest in military scouting. This book is of minor interest as an example of the type of book available early in the 20th century on military scouting. It is also of interest as a book belonging to Evan Jones, the co-founder of the Boy Scout movement in Warrnambool. This is a small book with a buff-coloured cardboard cover. It has red lettering on the front cover which is partly torn away at the right bottom edge. Many of the pages are also stained and torn away at the edges. The text includes sections on military patrolling in general and a section describing military patrols in the Boer War. There are several lift-out pages of sketches of patrols. Cyril and Joyce Hayward migrated from England in 1955 and quickly became involved in the Arts in Warrnambool. They both became life members of the Warrnambool Theatre Company. Mrs. Joyce Hayward along with her husband Cyril, had a 30 year association with the Warrnambool Theatre Company. They acted, directed and produced a number of works from the 1950’s through to the 1980’s. Mrs. Hayward taught drama and speech at Warrnambool High School and St Ann’s College. They both worked towards reviving the Warrnambool Arts Council.. They were involved in Christ Church choir, readings for the blind, Probus and Penguin club. They retired to Bribie Island in 1985. Joyce Hayward died aged 97 in 2007.Joyce and Cyril Hayward played a significant part in the development of the Performing Arts and Education in Warrnambool over a 30 year period. They both received the Warrnambool Citizenship award. This letter expresses the gratitude of Council and citizens of Warrnambool to the Haywards for their contribution.
