This scrapbook contains newspaper cuttings, mainly about football, and other written material from the late 19th century. It belonged to Martin Carter ((1870-1943), a Warrnambool saddler who worked for many years in the saddlery business established by his father, Samuel. Martin Carter was very active in community affairs - President of the Warrnambool Bowling Club, a member of the local Volunteer Militia, Secretary of the Progress Association, a football player and umpire and a local cricketer. He was the Secretary of the Warrnambool Town (later City) Band for fifty years and a memorial plaque in his honour was erected at the Band headquarters in Warrnambool. He was also a Warrnambool Councillor (1917-1925) and Warrnambool Mayor (1922-24). His interest in football can be seen from the great number of football newspaper cuttings in this notebook.This little notebook is most interesting as it provides us with details on football in the Warrnambool district in the late 19th century and gives us an indication of the popularity of the game at that time. It is a valuable research tool.This is a small notebook with a black cover. The pages contain ruled red lines over which have been pasted newspaper cuttings. Some pages have handwritten material and some pages are blank. There are also several loose cuttings. Girton College began as a private school in 1884 and was named after the first female residential college at Cambridge. Just prior to WW1, ownership and control was handed to the Anglican Church. In 1992 the church announced it would be closing the college for financial reasons. A group of volunteers stepped in to establish Girton Grammar School.Softcover book. The set of 30 cards were used by Miss Frida Striezel 1898. A rare, interesting set of numbered 1 - 30 cardboard cookery instruction cards - The Department of Public Instruction, Victoria Australia. They instructed how to prepare very Australian dishes with an English influence - e.g., Yorkshire Pudding, Pea Soup, Steak and Kidney Pie. The Government Printer's name indicates these were produced between 1887 and 1906. The cards are stored in a purple floral damask drawstring bag. There is handwritten sheet of paper with the above information.Handwritten in grey pencil at the top of every card is 'Frida Striezel'. On the back of Card 2 is handwritten in faded black ink No 1 -30 the title of the 30 recipes on the cards. This book, published in England, has been awarded as a school prize in 1887. Woodford School, No. 648, was an early National School which commenced in a house in 1854. In 1872 a sandstone building was erected. The school still operates. James Craig was the Head Master of Woodford School from 1884 to 1889. His wife was the Work Mistress of the school and both were involved in community affairs, particularly in regard to the Presbyterian Church and the local Mechanics’ Institute. Annis Morgan was born at Woodford to Jenkin and Mary Morgan in 1874. She would have been about 13 at the time she received the prize book. Annis (Ann) married Alan Patterson in 1897. This book is of considerable significance as it is connected with the history of Woodford, the Woodford school, the teacher, James Craig, the pupil, Annis Morgan and her family. This is a hard cover book of 812 pages The cover is black with an engraved ornamental pattern and edging and gold printing in the title on the cover and the spine. There is gilt edging on the pages. There is a bookplate on the inside front cover and one or two pages at the beginning are missing. The book contains many black and white illustrations with the first one covered by a piece of tissue (now blotched). The book contains poetry, short stories (some serialized) and some factual writing suitable for older children and adults.
