Stratford railway station is located on the Bairnsdale line in Victoria, Australia. The railway lined opened on 8 November 1887 it served the town of Stratford. The building at the Stratford Railway Station was opened around 1921 after the original building was destroyed by fire on 10 January 1920. "STRATFORD RAILWAY STATION. Mr. M'Lachlan, M.L.A., has received the following from Mr. Norman, late Chairman of the Railway Commissioners:-"In reply to yours, I beg to state that material for the new Stratford railway station has been ordered, and the work will be put in hand as soon as it has been delivered. It is not an easy matter at the present time to obtain materials, and I cannot say exactly when those required will be received." (Gippsland Times, 27 September 1920) Until their demolition, Munro, Fernbank, Lindenow and Hillside stations were located between Stratford and Bairnsdale stations. Probably originally drawn for publication in Melbourne newspaper showing detachment of Victorian Mounted Rifles on way to establish order at a strike site during the Labour and Shipping Strike of August 1890. During the strike armed troops were deployed to support the police in Melbourne and in Newcastle and a number of other ports around the country. In Melbourne, the announcement that a public meeting was going to be held on 31 August 1890 to support the maritime strikers sent the Victorian government into precautionary mode. On the eve of the meeting, the Victorian Mounted Rifles were briefed by their commanding officer Lieutenant-Colonel Tom Price: 'Men of the Mounted Rifles, one of your obligations imposes on you the duty of resisting invasion by a foreign enemy, but you are also liable to be called upon to assist in preserving law and order in the colony. ... To do your work faintly would be a grave mistake. If it has to be done effectively you will each be supplied with 40 rounds of ammunition, leaden bullets, and if the order is given to fire, don't let me see any rifle pointed in the air; fire low and lay them out so that the duty will not have to be performed again.' Price was quite clear and quite unapologetic about his intentions. He only wanted ′'to hit the strikers in the legs ... not to kill them outright. He explained that the term 'lay them out' was used in his regiment to mean 'temporary disablement'. A force of 1,000 militia and mounted police and another 1,000 special constables were embodied by the time of the meeting. These forces, apart from a troop of mounted police were held in reserve out of the way and the 40,000 who attended the meeting, although enthusiastic, were orderly and the forces were not called in. The 2/8th Armoured Regiment was raised in June 1941 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel W G Hopkins with officers and men selected from the wider AIF in Victoria. The regiment trained in newly arrived M3 General Grant tanks at Puckapunyal before moving north to Singleton, then the Wee Waa plains. The regiment sailed for New Guinea in April 1943 and carried out mobile defence to airfields at Port Moresby, Milne Bay, Dobadura and Popondetta. The regiment returned to Australia in February 1944 and disbanded as an armoured regiment and retrained as Nos 41, 42 and 43 Landing Craft Companies. There is a person standing on the lower roof section putting a case (?) into the upper floor with quite a few people up there also. There appears to be musical instruments behind the crowd. On the gangplank 2 men are wheeling a piece of equipment onto the steamer. The background steamer is the P. S. Canberra, also moored to the bank and unloading. There is a row boat in the middle of the river with 4 rowers and a standing cox.This appears to be a navel band getting ready for a cruise on the river, a social event that often happens in the Echuca area. On the other side of the river can be seen a "Caltex" sign and a couple of caravans parked between the trees.
