When Carl Sandner began Sandner and Sons Eucalyptus Distillery in 1875, he probably had no idea his archives would end up in the National Library. The distillery operated until 1967 and the Uley Street site was the subject of archaeological monitoring in 2011 prior to Bendigo’s new ambulance station being built there. But his great great grandson Alec Sandner handed over some mint-condition documents that he has held on to for many years. “I had this tin and the more I opened it, the more interested in it I became,” Mr Sandner said. “There was a letter from the Kaiser in 1888 because the business had written to them asking them to endorse. They had politely refused. “There was also a letter from the Italian consulate saying the King of Italy was satisfied with the product he received. Inside the box is a loose advertising card for the product. The box contains eleven small tins of the skin cream. Each tin has a small red wax seal on one side. Seven appear to be intact and unopened and four have been opened. Some of the printing on the tins is gold coloured in places but all tins show various stages of wear Two of them are inside original smaller boxes. On the left of the photo is a girl in a bikini top. On page 2 is a report on the increase on imports of knitted garments against local production. Also an article on quality control in Bendigo and a photo showing Mr Frank Harris viewing a fabric through an industrial magnifying glass. Page 3 shows knitwear from *The Admiral Club Range* Second item on page 2 is of The successful Kyneton Mill being established in 1921 bringing employment from the extended district. Map details the Circular Tramway Route, by cable and electric - shows the lines of the PMTT, HTT, rail lines and cable tramways. Photograph of some 94 traffic staff in front of the Malvern Depot, possibly near the time of the MMTB absorption of the PMTT. The employees are wearing two different styles of uniforms (63 dark and 31 light) all with caps. Shows the roller doors at the top of the depot and the overhead trolley mechanism that allowed the doors to close and bypass the trolley wire. There are four trams behind the men - each showing a different destination - Windsor, Esplanade, Mont Albert and Burke Road. The three cars on the right appear to be C class cars. Clothing rationing was gazetted in May 1942 and continued until June 1948. It allowed each person 112 coupons per year and each item of clothing had a coupon value. eg. Postcards began to be produced in Victoria from 1876. Between 1900 and 1920, picture postcards in Australia became an incredibly popular phenomenon. People could cheaply and easily send messages, without the formality of a letter, and they provided a cheap form of souvenir. Eventually, every event of significance was commemorated in some way with a postcard, and this led to the development of a ‘picture on one side and a message/stamp on the other’ postcard we are familiar with today. They were also a popular form of advertising.
