White embroidered cotton Christening gown. Eleven cm deep bodice with five vertical front neck to bodice and skirt seam, panels of embroidered cotton.Neckline has a casing with drawstring of cotton tape. Cap sleeves gathered at neckline edge, and outer edge trimmed with embroidered cotton. Skirt gathers to the bodice. Bodice also has a casing and drawstring tie, leaving a centre back opening from neck to skirt. Skirt is 84 cm long, and has an elaborately embroidered centre panel - full length. Two bands of embroidered cotton edge the centre panel. Embroidered "bobbles" similar to french knots extend full length beside the embroidered bands, and also form part of the embroidery on the bands. The gown was made by Merle's Grandmother for the christening of Merle's grandmother Geuer's son in 1885.costume, children's, christening gown

Golden satin ribbon gathered over a cardboard horseshoe shape. Light cream embroidered ribbon, 68 cms long, forms a loop, and is attached to the horseshoe with a bow. A floral arrangement of two leaves and five small "berries" decorates the horseshoe. Merle's Grandparents, Alice and Charles Geuer were married in 1892, celebrating their Wedding in 1942. Sheer embroidered nylon. Silk thread embroidery in a floral pattern. Scalloped edge finishes the lace panel. The original train on the wedding dress was a feature of the wedding gown, falling in tiers as a "waterfall" effect. One tier was later used by Merle to make a christening dress for her first child, Bronwyn. Diana Trewenack is the youngest daughter of Cedric Hirst and great granddaughter of Godfrey Hirst. Her father was Managing Director and Chairman of Directors of Godfrey Hirst Woollen Mills until its takeover in the 60’s. Diana was married at St David's Church in Geelong in May 1954. The material for the wedding gown was made with very fine cream wool woven at the Godfrey Hirst Woollen Mill. From discussion with Diana, the dress was put together by a local dressmaker in Geelong. It is fine pure wool and beaded on the edge of the wrap over skirt and on the long train.Cream coloured woollen wedding dress with long sleeves. Decorative beading pattern around cuffs and up the front edge of the dress.
