One of a number of this type of tram still in working order in Australian tramway museums. Has no motors. Interior one of the few given a paint finish by SEC, others are varnished. Has timber panelled sides.Single truck (4 wheels), drop ends, modified open California combination to closed car, with 4 doors, 2 at either end, longitudinal seats, sliding internal doors, air brakes. - electric motors removed. Photograph shows approx 20 uniformed drivers and conductors standing in front of 4 tramcars protruding from tram shed. The trams would be single truck, possibly R classes. The destination on the closest car appears to read "Race Course". Staff are all dressed in the first uniform of the M&MTB including caps and tunics with silver or brass buttons up to the neck. The location is the first Preston Depot opposite the future Preston Workshops. This depot and tramways were built by the Fitzroy, Northcote and Preston Tramways Trust but taken over by the M&MTB in 1920 before operations began. Black and white photograph of 2 trams in Swanston St c1925. Building in background may be the Queen Victoria hospital which places the trams just north of Lonsdale St. Photo has imperfection in top left corner of the image. First tram No. 171 is an S class single-truck California combination tram built by MMTB at Coburg Depot. It entered service in June 1922 and was withdrawn from service and sold in 1953. The tram's destination is shown as "Coburg Cemetery". Several passengers are seen boarding the tram. See page 64 of Destination City 5th Edition for another photo of this tram at South Melbourne Depot. The second tram, 178, is a T class single-truck combination tram with a long saloon, built by Duncan & Fraser, Adelaide for the MBCTT. It entered service in June 1917 as tram number 14C before transfer to the MMTB as T class tram. It was withdrawn from service and sold in 1961. This tram was one of only 6 Melbourne trams fitted with long wheelbase Brill Radiax truck. Photograph - of a K class four-wheel or single truck tram on a PMTT route 14 (STRATHALBYN ST (Kew) - VICTORIA BRIDGE) tram service, at Harp Road and High St. The reference gives the tram based at Kew Depot in 1928. The tram was originally a Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust tram, though, by the time of this photograph, it has been re-lettered for the MMTB, which took over the PMTT in 1920. The photograph has been marked up for a submission possibly to either Council or the MMTB for a waiting room or shelter at this location. The wall of the Harp of Erin Hotel and a Victoria Bitter sign can be seen on the right-hand side. The original photo appears to have been torn.
