A regular event for the widows was a concert by the Police Band in the Fitzroy Gardens. Held in March for many years. Held on the 1st March 1993 with around 600 ladies from all over Victoria in attendance. The Victorian Police Band was led by Inspector Mike Pyne and performers Daina Jowsey and Brian Carberry sang. The Victoria Police Pipe Band also played. The grand building is Rupertswood Mansion which was the Sunbury home of the Clarke family. The foundation stone was laid29th August 1874 by Mrs. W.J. Clarke the first wife of W.J.Clarke. The property along with the Clarke family have been interwoven with Sunbury's history over the decades and remained in the Clarke family until 1922 when H.V. McKay of Sunshine Harvester fame purchased the property. The Salesian Fathers purchased it in 1927 and since that time the property has been a school. Many important events have taken place in Sunbury within the Rupertswood grounds over the years. The Rays' badge was was adopted by the General Grand Council in Melbourne in 1935 from a design submitted by South Australia.The shape of the badge represented the love with which every child of God is encircled. The ivy leaf was for friendship and the lines represented the good deeds which go out from each young life as rays of light to bring sunshine in others. This meaning was adopted in 1948. In 1966, General Grand Council in Sydney, decided to discontinue the use of the Rays' badge in favour of the one badge for the whole organisation. This leather badge was made around circa 1950, and was sewn on to the leather jacket worn by Ian Downing. The Braybrook Motorcycle Club was formed in 1947 and on the 10th July 1950 merged with the Sunshine Club to form the Braybrook & District Motorcycle Club. In the mid 1960's the club disbanded and its activities were merged with the Newport Club. This publication was produced in the early 1950s to provide the growing tourism trade (at this time), to the region with a more detailed overview of the facilities available to tourists of the region's attractions. This brochure is a very efficient and effective promotional publication. The increasing level of self promotion by local business and commerce sectors of the region the more sought after the region became and the greater the ability of the region to grow (non rural based economy). Some of the regions unique facilities and geological structures are well suited to those tourists who live in cities and "flat land" regional bush areas within Australia. This was a period when the average Australian domestic tourist was more able (finance and transport wise) to see more of their country within the short time they had for "holidays". In the late 1900s, however, with the increase to workers' recreational leave and better transportation (fares, ease of travel to overseas destinations) the local tourism numbers from other domestic locations have been steadily declining. From the 1970s onwards, the increased tourism demand from overseas tourists, for better facilities and easier access to these regional facilities, resulted in better transport, accommodation and communication, which has been a boon for all tourism within Australia. In the 21st century the world is becoming smaller and smaller for the international tourist, especially for those from crowded Asian cities. The greater attraction for "open" spaced locations such as this region are becoming a much sought after change of scenery. This pamphlet which targets the tourist, whether either from other Australian regions or the global tourist, is a good example of self promotion by a relatively small local population. This is especially significant because before the "tourist explosion" in the 1950s onward, these regional areas had a more introspective society with greater emphasis to locally established mores and values. The increased interactions with people from other areas and nations, combined with a greater global communication network is affecting those traditionally established mores to produce a some what unique social transformation which is constantly changing from one generation to the next. One important factor which tourism does bring is that it opens up the region to a wider range of people who look to the region for their own lifestyle changes.This pamphlet has a front cover in colour with the major activities in the region sketched depicting : sunshine, snow skiing, trout fishing, mountain climbing, golfing, swimming, alpine views, tennis, lawn bowls and picnics. The back cover is blank. The pamphlet is fastened together by two staples 30mm from top and bottom, and is folded with the cover slightly thicker than the fifteen pages. Thirteen pages have been printed on both sides. The first page has a black and white photograph of the hotel Alpine and the tall brick constructed Clock Tower. The White City Greyhound racing stadium was built at Tottenham in 1927, with the intention that mechanical lures and not live hares be used as pacemakers. The first meeting was held on 10 December 1927 but within 3 days, after strong lobbying by other sports bodies, the Victorian Government banned betting on greyhound racing if mechanical lures were used instead of live hares. This caused some financial problems to the shareholders. For a time the average weekly attendances were 9000, and races were held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Whippet Races, Goat Races, Monkeys on greyhounds, and Professional Foot racing were also tried to attract attendances. After 28 years of bureaucratic interference, and using live hares as greyhound pacemakers, the White City stadium held its last meeting on 29 December 1955. On 31 December the Victorian Government finally allowed betting on greyhound races that used mechanical lures. Manufacturing industry (Olex Cables) took over the White City site. Transport to the White City stadium was provided by train, with only a single platform available on the Down side of Tottenham, even though double train lines existed. Special train services were run from Flinders Street to the White City platform, and for a while a parcels coach was provided for the transport of dogs. As industry developed in the area some trains also stopped at the White City platform in the mornings and late afternoons to transport workers. In 1981 when the grade separation at Ashley Street next to the Tottenham station was completed, the new train lines on the Upper Level came into operation, and so the White City platform was closed down and eventually demolished. The White City stadium in Tottenham was a major centre for the sport until 1955, enabling those who could not afford race horses to take part in an animal racing sport. The demolition of first the stadium and years later the railway platform, has relegated the name White City and its past relevance to the western suburbs, into history.Two low aerial photographs of the White City Coursing stadium (Greyhound racing), plus a CD containing the same two images as well as a few other local images. The Coursing stadium was located about 500 metres from the Tottenham railway station on the down line towards Sunshine station. The photographs are thought to be from circa late 1920's to early 1930's, and one shows the view from the north facing south, while the other from the west facing east. This booklet records in brief the history of the Nestles Factory at Dennington, Victoria from its opening in 1911 to its sale in 2005 to Fonterra Milk, Australia and the closing of the Nestles association with the Warrnambool district. The factory initially produced Sweetened Condensed Milk and by 1918 was the largest Milk Condensery in the world. In later years there were productions of cheese, Sunshine Powdered Milk and Nescafe Instant Coffee. Six two-storey residences were built for employees and there were twice-daily trains from Warrnambool to the factory and back for many years. The Nestanglo Social and Sports Club, established in 1923, was important in the community life of Dennington and beyond. This booklet will be of great use as it gives a very good summary of the history of Nestles Factory at Dennington and reveals how important the factory was to the Warrnambool region and to Australia.This is a paperback booklet of 37 pages. A regular event for the widows was the annual open air concert in the Fitzroy Gardens. This event was held on the 4th March 1990 and the 3rd Military District Band performed. The concert was held in March for many years. Over 600 ladies from metropolitan and country Victoria attended. The label says that the bandleader was Major Malcolm Bell and Donald Cant was the singer. Donald was a Lance Corporal and member of the 3rd Military Band but was on leave to be the understudy for Anthony Warlow in Phantom of the Opera. The photos show the widows sitting in the sunshine and enjoying the band. Photos were taken by Susie Howard, the publicity officer, and Legatee Melican. Photos were in a scrapbook of photos spanning 1983 to 1991. There were at least two different coloured sales posters depicting the same images, a yellow poster and a grey poster. It is unknown whether these were in use at the same time or whether one type preceded the other. Repaired images of the two posters placed side by side can be seen in the 2nd photo. The repair work was done by a volunteer at our Society with the aid of Microsoft Paint. Fireworks were manufactured in Sunshine Victoria from the early 1890's by the PHOENIX FIREWORKS CO. The factory was located a short distance to the north of Ballarat Rd, on the corner of Phoenix St and McIntyre Rd, North Sunshine. For safety reasons the factory consisted of small separated huts to minimise the damage in case one blew up. Images of the factory and the workers from Circa 1920's can be seen in the 3rd and 4th photos. Fireworks were readily sold by shops to the general public, including children, for celebrating Empire Day on May 24 and Guy Fawkes Day on November 5. Because of injuries, damages, and fires, sales to the general public of exploding fireworks such as bangers and crackers, were banned in Victoria in 1974. By 1982 sales of other fireworks, except for items such as sparklers, were also banned. Despite the bans some of the public still manages to obtain fireworks from other sources to this day, as evidenced by the many discharges on each New Year eve. The factory no longer exists and ironically part of the site is now occupied by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade and several small businesses, including a smash repair business and a tyre retailer. The poster shows the attitude that previously existed, where children and the general public could readily purchase and legally discharge fireworks. The main treatment of this ailment was a long period of rest, fresh air, sunshine and good food, so what better place to build a ‘Sanatorium’ than in the rural area they called Heatherton and affiliate it with the Melbourne Benevolent Asylum. After World War II c1947, the Commonwealth Government Health Department took over the Heatherton Hospital to deal with tuberculosis when it became a major problem in Australia. This was during the time when the Government conducted X-Ray surveys on a state by state basis. It was compulsory at that time for everyone to have a chest X-Ray. Victorian Railways Institute - The VRI was formed in 1909, and started operations at the 3rd Floor, Flinders Street Station, on 31 January, 1910. The Commissioners of the day saw a need for a Social Organisation, where Railway Staff could come together and discuss common issues, and relax in a friendly environment. The VRI was also, for many decades, the Primary Educator of all Rail Staff in their Duties and Tickets, from Train Crews, Station staff and the like, through to the Accounting Office team, everyone was trained at the VRI on how to do their jobs in the VRI. At the height of its power, the VRI would lead a member base of 30,000+ Families, all who would have a dedication to the Rail Industry and VRI.
