Located in High Street, Wodonga, this hotel underwent many modifications and name changes. It was built c1859 by James Bambrick close to the intended rail terminal in Huon Street. The site of the rail terminal actually changed but the name remained. James Bambrick served three terms as Wodonga Council president and was it was commonly referred to as “Bambrick’s Hotel”. It included 30 rooms as well as dining facilities. James Bambrick ran the hotel until 1902 when it was sold to J. Donnelly for £3,000. In 1912, whilst operated by T. J. Weller, the residential section of the hotel was almost completely destroyed by fire but only the ceiling of the bar was damaged and it continued to operate. Over the ensuing years the licensee changed hands frequently. By 1952, John Perry, owner of the “Stump” Junction Hotel also had the freehold of the Railway Hotel At some stage in the mid 1980’s the hotel was renamed as the “Murray River Hotel”, but still displayed the sign of the Railway Hotel. In 2009, it was closed for a short time whilst renovations took place to convert it into O’Maille’s Irish Hotel. It was demolished in 2020. These images document changes to an important local building first established c1868. This album has been produced in Germany at the end of the 19th century for the Warrnambool tourist market. It was sold in the book shop of Walter Davies. The father of Walter Davies, also called Walter, was a law clerk and accountant who established the book and stationery shop in Timor Street in the late 1860s. The business was operated by Walter Davies Senior, then his son and later the grandsonThis album is of interest for several reasons:- 1. It is an interesting example of the type of tourist souvenir available to visitors to Warrnambool in the late 19th century. 2. It contains 13 photographs of Warrnambool in the late 19th century and these are of considerable historical value. 3. It is a good example of the type of articles sold by Walter Davies at his Timor Street shop in 1894. This is a hard cover folder containing 13 black and white photographs of Warrnambool and surrounds. The photographs are on several sheets of white paper joined together in concertina fashion to fit into the folder but they have become detached from the folder. Some of the photographs are torn at the edges. The cover of the folder has embossed gold lettering and the narrow spine is faded and the front cover is a little torn and stained. This leaflet was a promotion tool of the Warrnambool business, Swintons Pty Ltd. It was used to insert stamps given by the firm when goods were purchased. When the pages were filled with 200 stamps the owner was given two shillings and sixpence in cash. It was a reward to the regular customer. William and Ann Swinton migrated to Australia in 1854 and for a decade William Swinton worked as a builder and carpenter in the Warrnambool area. In 1865 he opened a store in Timor Street, Warrnambool selling groceries, hardware, glassware and china. By 1888 the business was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch stores were opened in Cudgee, Nullawarre, Wangoom, West Warrnambool and South Warrnambool. After William Swinton’s death, his son, Robert, became the first managing director of Swintons Pty Ltd. In 1934 the business split, with George Swinton and Sons selling furnishings, clothing and glassware and Swintons Pty Ltd selling groceries, seeds, produce and hardware. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding store in Timor Street. This leaflet is of interest as an example of the advertising practices carried out by the firm of Swintons Pty Ltd, an important business in Warrnambool for many years. The current Swinton business in Timor Street, Warrnambool is the oldest family business in Warrnambool and, with the name Swinton associated with Timor Street businesses for 152years, it is amongst the oldest family businesses in Australia.This is a leaflet with a grey cover and four pages inside. Tourist brochures have been produced in Warrnambool since the 1890s and this one has been published by the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Some of the photographs for this brochure come from the Warrnambool Standard newspaper and the information on the car tours was provided by the Warrnambool Tourist Information Centre. Tourism in the Warrnambool region has always been of major importance to the town/city and a local Chamber of Commerce or Tourists’ Association has been active in the area for over 100 years. Today the official tourist guides are produced by the Warrnambool City Council. This brochure is a good example of local tourism promotion in the 1970s and will also be useful for display. This is a small booklet (1975) containing 39 pages. It has local Warrnambool advertisements, maps, photographs, printed material and details of 9 tours that tourists could take by car around Warrnambool. The pages are stapled. Cameron Stewart Baird, VC, MG was a soldier in the Australian Army who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for Australia, the highest award in the Australian honours system. Cameron enlisted on 4/1/2000 and was posted to the 4th Battalion (Commando) RAR now known as the 2nd Commando Regiment. He was deployed on 7 operations including Operation TANAGER - Timor Leste in 2001 Operation BASTILLE and FALCONER - Iraq in 2003. Cameron resigned from the ADF in 2004 re enlisting in 2006 and again posted to 2nd Commando Regiment. In 2007 he was promoted to Lance Corporal and deployed on Operation SLIPPER - Afghanistan. He was awarded the Medal for Gallantry. In 2008 he was promoted to Corporal and deployed again on Operation SLIPPER in 2009 2011 and 2013.
