... with the words "BALLARAT TRAMWAYS SECTION STAFF" cast into the surface...Ballarat Tramways Section Staff Darling St Loop Rubicon St...Demonstrates aspects of Safeworking on the Ballarat Tramway ...Demonstrates aspects of Safeworking on the Ballarat Tramway system from 1960 to c1936 when replaced by electric signs. Yields Information about the operation of Ballarat's trams and safeworking procedures.Cast brass item with a flat part recessed section with the words "BALLARAT TRAMWAYS SECTION STAFF" cast into the surface and a flat section underneath, flush with the outside edges in which the words "DARLING ST LOOP RUBICON ST LOOP " stamped in. Has an open rounded end which forms a handle or a point where it could be hung on a peg. Used as a means of authorising a tramcar to have sole use of the track between the named points to avoid head on collisions. Safeworking object - known as a section staff. Not known when made, but in use until the introduction of the electric signalling in the mid 1930's by the SEC. The tram No. 21 was "decorated by nurses and their friends". The tram was to publicise the hospital's $50,000 appeal until the end of May. Inspecting the tram in the photo were public relations officer, Mr. David Rees, Dr I.C. Goy and Mr. K.J.Neerhut with nursing staff members, SEC painters and carpenters who shared in the work. Tram photographed on the depot fan, with Lake Wendouree in the background. Tram known as the Trambulance. See Reg. Notes horse trams, ESCo, opening of lines, tram car builders, their rehabilitation in the 1930's, the involvement of the BTPS, trams 1 and 12. Has two photos, one of tram 27 sitting outside the SEC depot carrying the "This tram has just completed 1,000,000 miles in Ballarat" and one of tram 31, east bound in Bridge St. bound for Victoria St. dropping off a passenger at a stop. Both picture from the Courier Archives. Item in the Courier's "Saturday Magazine".
