This is a booklet containing the newspapers published on board the ship, ‘General Wyndham’ during its voyage from Liverpool to Melbourne in 1857. The newspapers may be copies of the newspapers rather than original ones. Betsey(Betsy/ Betty) Smith, the wife of Thomas Smith of Warrnambool, came to Australia with their daughter Lizzie (Elizabeth) on board the ‘General Wyndham’ in 1857 on the particular voyage during which these newsletters were printed (the emigrant ships coming to Australia at that time usually carried printing presses of some kind). It is conjectured that Thomas Smith who had come to Australia on an earlier voyage and who was a printer in Koroit Street, Warrnambool in the 19th century, printed and bound the newsletters that his wife had kept. This book is of great importance as a good collection of the newsletters printed on board emigrant ships. If the newsletters came from Betsy Smith then the significance is even greater. The newsletters tell us so much about life on board the ‘General Wyndham’ ship – the range of articles, the light-hearted humorous touches, the accounts of the deaths on board, the picture of life on board that is conveyed and the overall professional look of the newsletters make the journal interesting to read and of great historical interest. This is a bound book of 44 pages containing a collection of nine newsletters printed on board the ship, ‘General Wyndham’ in 1857. The cover is light brown and is very stained. The contents of the newspapers include poems, news items, reports of the ship’s log and its progress, accounts of the activities and organizations aboard the ship, letters to the editor and editorials. This object is used to wind yarn ,typically wool from a skein or hank into a ball from which it can be worked into the required garment. The skein is placed around the four pegs on the ends of each arm and wound from this into a ball. The movable arm facilitate easier winding of the yarn. It is thought that this may have come from Fletcher Jones factory where it was probably used more to rewind cotton onto reels. Either use is possible.This item or those similar would have been a well used tool in many households before the time of woollen yarn being purchased in balls. As such it has social and historical significance as well as being useful as an item to create discussion.Square wooden base with bevelled edge and central post from which is screwed two wooden strips of wood. Worn as part of a uniform, this belt is to be worn around the waist with the tongue section on the wearer's right hand side. This jacket was worn by Bernie Farley, of the 8th/7th Battalion, Royal Victorian Regiment. This belt has social significance, being owned and worn by Secretary of the Warrnambool RSL, Bernie Farley. The belt was donated as part of a uniform set by Bernie Farley after 30 years of service in both the Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force. David Fletcher Jones (1895-1977) was a travelling hawker who opened a business in Liebig Street, Warrnambool in 1924. In 1931 he opened The Man's Shop at the corner of Liebig Street and Koroit Street. He sold suits and overcoats tailored in the work rooms upstairs. In 1948 his factory known as Pleasant Hill was opened in Flaxman Street in Warrnambool, the site of an old quarry. In 1951 the company Fletcher Jones and Staff was formed with the staff owning 51% of the shares, By the 1970s Fletcher Jones and Staff had become one of the largest clothing companies in Australia with 55 shops and 3000 employees. In 1992 the Warrnambool City Council bought the factory and gardens with the site now a tourist attraction. Although the name is retained today for trading purposes the original Fletcher Jones company has been dissolved. The screen is a representation of the Fletcher Jones factory post 1967. It a wool tapestry by Martin Prider who was a painter and caretaker what the Fletcher Jones factory. He lived in one of the Fletcher Jones cottages on site. (Robin Boyd Age Small Homes Scheme, today Heritage listed.)This is an interesting memento of the Fletcher Jones company and the factory. It was done by a local resident and features the famous Fletcher Jones gardensTapestry fire screen in a rectangular light timber frame depicting the Fletcher Jones Factory Gardens. The screen has two timber feet, non relective glass and appears to be a wool tapestry. The image of the gardens is after 1967 as the silver ball is included and that was erected in 1967. The following is an extract from Warrnambool and District Historical Society Website which explains briefly the Great Exhibition of 1896-97 The Great Industrial and Art Exhibition in Warrnambool in 1896-97 was an exciting affair for the town and the surrounding area. People came from far and wide to be enlightened, educated and entertained, with 70,000 visitors passing through the doors during the three months of the exhibition. Not bad for a town with a population of only 6,500 and a further 9,200 living in the surrounding shire! Planning began at a public meeting attended by 60 people in May 1896 and the exhibition opened in December the same year on the site of the current Light House Theatre. The architects submitted plans for four annexes, complete with turrets, a fernery and a giant flagpole. The site covered 1 acre and included a Marine court, industrial exhibits, an education court, defense and agriculture court, stalls, coach builders, dairy show, an art court and provision for a smorgasbord of various entertainment. This publication is a result of funding made to the Corangamite Arts Council in 1990-91. Its aims were to identify and research the dry stone walls of the region, to raise their profile and through workshops continue the skills of those wanting to learn more about the craft. Cyril and Joyce Hayward migrated from England in 1955 and quickly became involved in the Arts in Warrnambool. They both became life members of the Warrnambool Theatre Company. Mrs. Joyce Hayward along with her husband Cyril, had a 30 year association with the Warrnambool Theatre Company. They acted, directed and produced a number of works from the 1950’s through to the 1980’s. Mrs. Hayward taught drama and speech at Warrnambool High School and St Ann’s College. They both worked towards reviving the Warrnambool Arts Council.. They were involved in Christ Church choir, readings for the blind, Probus and Penguin club. They retired to Bribie Island in 1985. Joyce Hayward died aged 97 in 2007.Joyce and Cyril Hayward played a significant part in the development of the Performing Arts and Education in Warrnambool over a 30 year period. They both received the Warrnambool Citizenship award. This letter expresses the gratitude of Council and citizens of Warrnambool to the Haywards for their contribution. These 2 photos are of Orbost men who were part of the 13th Light Horse volunteer regiment. This military training activity continued on after W W I. These photos were taken at the training camp at Seymour, Victoria. The Orbost troop would journey to other areas for training, sometimes to Bombala, and also practice on the Orbost Rifle Range. Although not identified in these photos, George William Wraight was a leader of the Light Horse Troop in Orbost and it is his daughter Dorothy Hepburn who has donated these photos. George W Wraight was the railway-station master at Orbost from 1935. The Troop often met at the Wraight house in Tarra Street, Orbost for training. George had been in W W I in the Middle East with the Light Horse. While at the railway station at Orbost, George had an accident and suffered 2 broken legs which meant that he could no longer work there. During W W II, he worked as a recruiting officer at Sale and Warrnambool. This butter box belonged to Jack Gore of Warrnambool who used it in his garage to store car parts. It is connected to Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory Company Limited through the box manufacturer, Peter John McGennan, who was one of the instigators of the factory. Cobden and Warrnambool factories were the first two co-operative factories to produce butter in Victoria, both commencing in 1888. Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory Company Ltd is the only remaining independent butter factory still using its original name. It is an example of the manner in which butter was packed for export from the late 19th century until well into the 20th century. Its innovative design is light but strong, using plywood for the box body and struts 'stitched' to the body with wire. The ply was originally pine imported from New Zealand which did not taint the butter. Following the exclusion of the timber from NZ, plantations of local pine were planted and used. McGennan's box factory supplied butter boxes to the majority of butter factories in Victoria, producing up to half a million boxes per year by 1917.This Cobden butter box is historically significant relating to the butter industry and a rare item. The Percy Uebergang family lived at Tooram Park, Allansford from 1912 until 1992. Percy and Myrtle Uebergang's children were twins, Ray and Joyce born in 1926 who lived at Tooram Park until their deaths, Ray in 1986 and Joyce in 1992. Neither Ray nor Joyce married and following the death of her brother Joyce set up the Ray and Joyce Uebergang Foundation which supports the local community. This photograph is part of the collection of items given into the care of the Cheese World Museum. This tin belonged to Doug Burleigh and was used by his family as a tea caddy. The Burleigh family were early settlers in the Nullawarre area. James Burleigh was a director of Warrnambool Cheese and Butter and undertook an overseas farm study tour to the United Kingdom in the late 1930s.These Australiana tea caddies are significant as an item with aesthetic and interpretive capacity. It was common in many households on the mantelpiece for ready access. It was also a means for Bushells to advertise their product. An octagonal tin tea caddy decorated with embossed Australian animals in full colour on each side -kangaroo, emu, koala and kookaburra; light blue background and top and a circular lid with the brand name imprinted. Diver's Submarine Electric Torches were first developed to give illumination for close examination work. They have to be self-contained, the older ones are powered by an accumulator type battery which could be recharged. Some models were fitted with a switch to turn the light off saving on the battery power. The lens is of a convex type and magnifies the light. Sometimes there was a protective grill across the glass or prongs to protect the glass from an impact. When fully charged the battery would last about seven hours. Torches are made from non-ferrous metal so as not to corrode in their watery environment. Siebe Gorman & Co Ltd has been producing hand-held, battery-powered, submarine electric torches for divers and the Ministry of Defence (MOD) since the 1920s. In 1961, the famous diving manufacturer C.E. Heinke merged with Siebe Gorman, and for a short while, torches were made with the combined 'Siebe Heinke' inscription. However, this linked inscription was later dropped, with a return to the Siebe Gorman name tag. Date of manufacture for these torches can be determined by their Admiralty Pattern (AP) number that was used to identify a particular item and were for naval stores use. Before NATO stock coding became more widely used, earlier MOD torches often have a simple four-digit group of AP numbers such as AP4456 or AP4458. In 1975 Siebe Gorman moved from their Neptune Works at Chessington in Surrey to a new location at Cwmbran in Wales and by this time their manufacture of diving equipment had declined. The company that made the torch Siebe Gorman was a leading inventor, developer and innovator of marine equipment with its early developments in helmets, compressors and other diving equipment. Items that are today eagerly sought after for maritime collections around the world. Since 1895, Hobbies Ltd have been supplying model makers and enthusiasts throughout the world with a wide range of quality model kits, accessories, tools, components and handbooks. The Hobbies Company began life in Dereham, Norfolk in 1881 with a London Office opened later (1922) at 65 New Oxford Street, WC1. In 1895 Hobbies began supplying model makers with their products and in 1897 were incorporated into a Public company. The kerosene lamp was one of the most common oil lamps used and was manufactured until the 1980s. This lamp appears to be a modern reproduction of an earlier optional wall-mounted kerosene lamp. The lamp has been produced as an example of a 19th and early 20th-century marine kerosene navigation lamp. Marine lamp; portside metal kerosene lamp with two flat sides, and a curved front. The front has a red ridged glass lens insert and the name "port" is inscribed on a fixed brass plaque. A round chimney is on top of the lid and it has a catch. The fuel tank and wick can be removed through the base.
