Raleighs Road - Property of the Raleigh family descendants of Reiersen family from Norway. Henry and wife Catherine had a small wooden house near Djerriwarrh Creek. Their daughters Catherine married Robinson, and Henrietta married Isaac Robinson of “Creighton” Toolern Vale Road. Henry’s Brother Oliver married Margaret McLean. Their children were, Elsie, Rupert, Lois, Annie, Albert and Olga. She died in September 1986. She was a long term organist at the Presbyterian Church. This photograph is believed to have been taken in the 1890s at the Crosier property at Happy Valley (the Crosiers lived along the road leading to the Happy Valley School. Crosier descendants still live on this site). People in the photo are thought to be, L-R: Nell Crosier, Mary Crosier (née Hogan), Maggie Crombie (née Crosier), Jack Crombie. Mary Crosier was the second wife of Henry Crosier (1825-1901), a miner and farmer at Happy Valley. They had eight children. Their oldest daughter Maggie Crosier (1865-1932) married John Charles (Jack) Crombie in 1893. Sarah Ann Dawe, née Carpenter, was the wife of William Dawe who ran a general store/greengrocery in Sussex Street, Linton, probably from the 1870s, and who also had mining interests. The Dawe family migrated to Victoria in 1857. They first lived at Geelong but are believed to have settled in Linton shortly after their daughter Mary Ann married Robert Simeon Nelson in 1864. The photograph was printed from a glass plate negative found after death of the donor's uncle. Hugo Hans Hohne (dec. 1978) and wife Lelia (dec. 2000) - she used to breed dogs - lived in South Eltham near Eltham Lower Park, on Homestead Rd, 1940-c.1970? The Hohnes Hill Reserve in South Eltham along Hohnes Rd is named after them. The family’s location in Homestead Rd was common knowledge at the time. Hohnes Rd was an unnamed Government road that was named by the Council probably in the 1980s. Hohnes Hill Reserve was probably named later. We do not have any records of when the road and reserve were named. Size of box is 6cm x 4cm In 1936, young Eric Child (1910-1995) met, and squired around London's jazz night-spots, Lucille Wilson a dancer in Lew Leslie's Blackbirds stage production at the Gaiety Theatre. Although Lucille knew a few famous bandleaders she, at that time, had never heard of Louis Armstrong, THE King of jazz, according to Eric. Later, in a letter to Eric in late 1942, Lucille wrote that she had met his King - and had become his fourth wife on 7th October 1942. She had finally worked with Louis at the new Cotton Club in Harlem in 1939 where she was in the chorus line using the stage name Brown Sugar. The long platonic friendship with Lucille remained and Eric and his wife Angela (1919-2001) welcomed her and the King in Brisbane on Louis' first visit to Australia in April 1956, and on all subsequent visits here. At a dinner at the Child's Sydney home Lucille presented Angela with one of Louis' famous stage handkerchiefs, signed by the All Stars, and a her own brooch and earrings, which Angela had quite innocently admired. Following Eric's death in 1995, Angela promised the Louis handkerchief to Bill Haesler and the brooch and earrings to Jess Haesler when she died. Rather than keeping these unique items private, the Haeslers donated them, in Angela's memory to the Victorian Jazz Archive. The LHLG newsletter of 1918 features this image and notes that they accompanied their shipmaster father Captain Aviss, of the Barque Inverneill who with his wife Catherine Florence Aviss, travelling through dangerous European waters, brought the family of three children to visit Melbourne. The two children featured are Margaret and Ronald, born at sea in 1915. Their young sister, Ruth Neil, was also born at sea on the 27 August 1918. The family re-united with a first meeting for the children and grandparents, Captain and Mrs Frampton, who "had lost two ships to enemy submarines and were now on their third". The family participated in "a happy Communion service in our chapel , in which the parents and grandparents joined this formed the keystone of their visit to Melbourne". Unfortunately the young Mrs Aviss contracted the Spanish influenza on their arrival in St John, New Brunswick, Canada, she succumbed in November 1918 after spending a week in the Parks Hospital. Herbert Aviss was left with 2 toddlers and a 3 month old baby. He went back to England with his children in March 1919 on passenger ship, accompanied by a nurse. Martin Frampton and his wife were in New York at the time, but they probably learnt about Catherine's death in the local newspaper. A memorial plaque in her name unveiled in the chapel at the Mission in April 1919. The parents and grandparents left their names and signatures in the visitor book (0149) on the 28 April 1918.One of the rare stories of seafarer visits illustrated with a photograph of the children of a family accustomed to life aboard ship. The impact of influenza also affected this family and others are recorded amongst the supporters of the Mission and reflects the widespread impact that the epidemic of the post WW1 period had on people, Mission activities and restrictions affecting public events. William MacMahon Ball (‘Mac’ Ball) was Professor of Political Science at Melbourne University from 1949 to 1968, having lectured there since 1923. He became known as an ABC commentator on international affairs from the early 1930s to the early 1960s. Between 1940 and 1944 he was Controller of Overseas Broadcasting (which later became Radio Australia). In 1945, he was political consultant to the Australian Delegation at the conference leading to the establishment of the United Nations, and in 1946 was the British Commonwealth Representative on the Allied Council during the post-war occupation of Japan. Mac and his wife Katrine (plus daughter Jenny) came to Eltham in 1942, and in 1945 moved into an old timber cottage at the eastern end of York Street. With help from Alistair Knox, Sonia Skipper, Gordon Ford and John Harcourt, the house was totally renovated to become an early example of Eltham mud-brick. Mac died in 1986 and is buried in Eltham Cemetery with Katrine. Part of their land backing onto Bridge Street was donated to Eltham Shire Council and is now a reserve called MacMahon Ball Paddock. Born in Hammersmith, London, England in 1903, Ernie May migrated to Australia at the age of 19 years old. A printer by trade, Ernie worked on the land at Woodburn, near Wonthaggi, then near Smithton, Tasmania. He then returned to his trade at the Launceston Daily Telegraph and then with the Rainbow Argus in the Victorian Mallee. Arriving in Wodonga in 1927, Ernie was employed by Mr Charles Ryan who at the time owned the "Wodonga Sentinel" newspaper. He quickly became involved in community activities. Ernie was President of the Border and Northeast Band Association, Secretary of Wodonga Rifle Club for 20 years and Secretary of the Public Library for 15 years. When Ernie May was Wodonga Bandmaster, the Wodonga Band played at Saturday afternoon football matches as well as other public appearances. At that time the Wodonga Band had 30 members. Ernie also conducted his own dance band. In 1952, Mr May and his wife moved to Sale, gaining employment firstly with the Enterprise Press, then the Gippsland Times. In 1957 he started up a monthly paper at Phillip Island. Not content with so many years as Bandmaster at Wodonga, Ernie May became Bandmaster for Phillip Island's brass band. Patience (Pat) and Ruth Cornell, c1914 - 2 of the daughters of Frank Cornell and his wife Blanche Annie Parsons Cornell. Frank Cornell was first listed in Surrey Hills in 1906 at (6) Lorne Parade. In 1908 the listing gives his occupation as a clerk. He was born in 1869 in Richmond, Victoria and died 15 April 1917 in Surrey Hills. Blanche Annie Parsons Cornell (nee Bracher) was born in 1869 in Hokitika, New Zealand; she died on 21 January 1940. Children were: Gilbert Frank Cornell (b1894, Hawthorn; d1908, at Frankston beach, an accidental drowning) Ruth Amelia Cornell (b 1899, Kew; d 29 May 1977, Kew) Lorna Amy Cornell (b 1906, Surrey Hills; d unknown) Patience Blanche Cornell (b1907, Surrey Hills; d unknown. Legacy celebrated its Centenary in 2023 by conducting a Torch Relay from Pozieres in France, to London, and around Australia, ending in Melbourne. This cap was part of the uniform used by Legatee David Kelly on 12th and 13th October, who then donated it to the archive. Legatee Kelly is a Past President of Melbourne Legacy 2000, Past Chairman of Legacy Coordinating Council 2009/10. Legatee Kelly was the ML representative on the Board of Legacy Australia Inc in October 2019 when the initial decision was made to investigate the possibility of conducting a relay to commemorate Legacy’s centenary. Legatee Kelly together with the Hobart Legacy representative were Co-Chairman of the Centenary of Legacy Committee reporting to Legacy Australia Inc. On 12th October 2023 Legatee Kelly together with his wife Legatee Helen Kelly participated in the Torch Relay in the Melbourne Legacy leg of the relay. On Friday 13th October the Torch Relay was scheduled to conclude at the Shrine of Remembrance with the flame to be returned to the eternal flame at the Shrine. This portrait was taken during the visit of Stevenson & McNicoll to Bacchus Marsh September-November 1883. It is probable that they used the silver albumen process. The subject of the portrait is Peter Murray, bootmaker, who set up his business in Bacchus Marsh at 181 Main Street in 1872. In 1889 he added an extension to his dwelling. In later years, Mrs Murray advertised Board and Lodging at "Murri House", in premises adjoining the shop and dwelling. Mr. Murray was active in the local community, and was a Councillor on his death. He was also the local Electoral Registrar. His death may have been hastened as a result of a serious accident in 1893 when he fell heavily and broke his right leg above the ankle, which necessitated the removal of a protruding portion of bone. He was taken by train to the Melbourne Hospital, accompanied by Dr Vance and a number of his neighbours. He made a recovery and in 1904 hosted a meeting of the local Quoit Club. On 14th June 1908 Peter Murray died at his home in Main Street Bacchus Marsh. He had been suffering from Brights disease for about 6 months. He was aged 65 at the time of his death. His first wife had predeceased him. His second wife, Margaret survived him. Later in 1908, Mr. W. Bullock advertised that he had taken over the business of the late Mr. P. Murray.The Melbourne photographers Stevenson & McNicoll visited the Bacchus Marsh district in 1883. They took photographs of many local families and individuals in front of their houses or businesses. More than 50 of these images were preserved by the Hawkins family of Bacchus Marsh and passed to a granddaughter of that family Mrs Beryl Jeremeas who donated those images to the Bacchus Marsh and District Historical Society in 1973. Stevenson & McNicoll are known to have taken numerous studio portrait photographs of Bacchus Marsh people. This was probably the larger part of their work. However very few of these images have been acquired by local historical societies. This image of Peter Murray is the only known example of one of the 1883 studio portraits of Bacchus Marsh residents produced by Stevenson & McNicoll. The barn is situated near Råbelöv castle, and near the small medieval church adjacent to the property, that is a popular baptismal and wedding church. Råbelöv Castle is a castle in Kristianstad Municipality, Scania, in southern Sweden. The castle was built in 1637. In this year, Christopher Ulfeld Råbelöf's current main building, his and his wife's initials were still on the north end. He died in 1657 and was succeeded at Råbelöf first by his son Björn, then by his nephew Otto. Both died young, whereby Christopher's son Ebbe, married to Hedewig, daughter of Christian IV and his second wife, Kirsten Munck, took office in 1663. In 1676 - 1678 Kristianstad was held by the Danes, but was besieged by Charles XI. The siege staff were located at Råbelöf, both on the enclosed yard and on a moat surrounded by a islet just west of the farm. During this time, Råbelöf was held by Ebbe's daughter Anna Catharina, married to Carl Gustaf Skytte. The latter settled for a time in 1712 on the fortified island within the moat to protect himself from the then ravaging plague. From the Skåne trip in 1749, Linnaeus describes homes and a lovely garden with mulberry and walnut trees, grapes, lavender and white lilies in abundance. The owner was then Anna Catharina Ridderschantz, married to Ludvig Gustaf von Böhnen. She made 1763 Råbelöf and Odersberga fidei committee for the benefit of her three daughters. The Fidei Commission letter is difficult to interpret when it comes to the time after the three daughters, something that several times caused bitter heritage disputes. In 1782 the entire farm burned, the main building was badly damaged and the family moved to Råbelöf belonging to Odersberga, which then had completely new buildings, those that are still there today. Only in 1833 then did the fidei commissioner Fredrik von Rosen return to Råbelöf. The main building had then been cut down and fitted with a new south gable. According to fidei commission rules, Råbelöf returned to the von Böhnen family in 1864. Accession did not become presumed Celestine von Böhnen but instead her older brother Axel. Celestine was married to John William Kennedy. The fide commission went to her and John Williams son James Kennedy. The family could then look back on a number of tortuous legal proceedings between John William and his wife Celestine on the one hand and Axel and his wife Elsa Maria on the other. James was a chamberlain, sitting in the first chamber where he fought socialism. This led to the large agricultural workers' strike in 1907 that was concentrated on Kennedy's three farms Råbelöf, Odersberga and Hammarsjö. In 1906, his eldest son Douglas, the future fidei commissioner, took his life. Four years later another son took his life. James and his wife took the disasters hard, they fell ill. The young son Gilbert got in 1908, only 22 years old, took over responsibility for the farm. James son Gilbert Kennedy took over as Fidei Commissioner in 1916 and they became known as outstanding farmers with, among other things, grazing for dairy cows and fruit growing as specialties. He passed away in 1946 and was succeeded by his son Douglas, who gave continuity to Råbelöf's position with among other things, a new barn with loose running and slatted floors in 1965. Douglas Kennedy held the farm 61 years before he passed away in 2007. He became the last fidei commissioner, the property became a fideicommissie corporation inherited by his sister-in-law John Murray, who in turn in 2010 left it his children Caroline Murray Karlsson and Johan Murray. Catherine Maggs was married to James Maggs who belonged to a large pioneer family in the Ringwood area. They had nine children. James died in July 1940. These albums record a sea cruise undertaken by Warrnambool residents, Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie, in 1935. (.1 album belonged to Agnes Ardlie and .2 item belonged to Dorothy Ardlie). The albums were complimentary items given to passengers on the P.& O. shipping company sea trip to Fiji. Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) were the daughters of Arthur and Ethel Ardlie of Warrnambool, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool. Dorothy Ardlie’s diary of this trip is included in her album. These albums are of interest, firstly as souvenirs of Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie, members of a prominent family in Warrnambool in the 20th century and secondly as a record of an example of the type of sea cruise undertaken by the more affluent Australians in the 1930s. .1 This is a soft cover photograph album with a brown cover which is rather tattered around the edges. There are some autographs on the first two pages. The album contains 26 black and white photographs and sketches pasted on to the pages. There is also a pocket on the back page with several loose photographs and souvenirs of a sea trip. .2 This is a soft cover photograph album identical to .1 above, except that this one is not so tattered. It has 68 items, including black and white photographs which have been inserted using photograph corners pasted in and souvenirs from a sea trip. These two badges came from the estate of Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie of Warrnambool. Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) were the daughters of Arthur and Ethel Ardlie of Warrnambool, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool. The badges appear to have belonged to Agnes Ardlie who was known to have been a keen sportswoman. The Warrnambool Racing Club was founded in the 1870s and annually produced badges for members, both men and women. Female membership of the Warrnambool Golf Club was well established by 1890 and the course then was in Albert Park. These two badges are of interest as having local provenance, belonging to a member or members of a prominent family in Warrnambool in the mid 20th century..1 This is a metal badge in an elliptical shape with gold edging. The image on the badge shows a horse and jockey clearing a hurdle with wording around the image. The colours used are blue, red, gold and green. The badge has a metal clip at the top with a blue cord attached. The back of the badge has wording imprinted on it. .2 This is an oval-shaped metal badge with an image of two golf clubs in blue and gold and the word ‘Associates’ in gold and green. The trophy was won by Agnes Ardlie in 1950. The Warrnambool Golf Club was established in the late 19th century and the game was played by both men and women at Albert Park until 1929 when it shifted to its present day course in what was once part of the old Western Reserve. This trophy is of interest as a mid 20th century memento of a member of a prominent family in Warrnambool, Miss Agnes Ardlie and of the Warrnambool Golf Club.This is an electro-plated nickel silver mug with a circular base, a tapering body and a handle. This fire extinguisher was used for commercial purposes in the Nullawarre Post office. The item was made in England by the Pyrene Co Ltd (1914-1971), one of the world’s leading manufacturers of fire fighting equipment in the early to mid 20th century. The extinguisher had a pump action and probably contained carbon tetrachloride. Nullawarre is a small agricultural settlement 25 kilometres south east of Warrnambool. The Nullawarre area was settled in the late 1860s and 1870s and today has a store and Post Office and a school. Charles Williams was the Post Master at Nullawarre in the early to mid 20th century and also delivered the mail. His wife, Vida was the Post Mistress. This fire extinguisher is of interest firstly as an example of a common item used commercially in the past and secondly as an item that came from the Nullawarre Post Office, used in this commercial building in the early to mid 20th century. This is a metal fire extinguisher which has been painted but the paint is mostly worn away. It is cylindrical in shape with ridged areas at the base and top. It has a clip handle. This medal was made by W.J.Amor Mint, a medal making company from New South Wales. It was made to commemorate both the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Canberra in 1963 and the Royal Visit of 1963. Because of the rivalry between the two major Australian cities, Melbourne and Sydney, it was decided to establish a new capital city somewhere between the two cities. The Australian capital Territory was established in 1913 and the American architect, Walter Burley Griffin, in association with his wife, Marion Mahony Griffin, was chosen to design the new city of Canberra. The first Parliament House was opened in 1927 and Melbourne ceased to be the location of the Federal Parliament meetings.This medal is of interest, mainly because it commemorates the 50th anniversary of the first Parliament House in Canberra and the establishment of Canberra as Australia's capital city.Circular brass medal with ring attached at the top and a split ring through the ring.
