One of several Dandenong Creek marker posts inscriptions: "Busch's Weir was located at this section of the creek between 1930s to 1960s. In the 1930s, German migrant Hermann Otto Busch and his wife Dorothea moved to Bayswater and opened the Waldheim Farm Guest House. Busch built a concrete weir to create a popular swimming and fishing destination. The weir was a thriving attraction until the 1960s. Although little remains, it is fondly remembered by the Heathmont community. City dwellers would retreat to the guesthouse and wander down to Dandenong Creek to enjoy a weekend in the 'country'. A memorial fountain was original originally sited at close to the gates of the Mortake State School and was unveiled by the citizens of Mortlake to perpetuate the memory of the late Cr Thomas Montgomery. The fountain was to be erected before the death of Cr Montgomery but as he died before this happened it became a memorial. Made of bluestone and Apollo Bay and Ceres stone it was designed by Messrs Wilcox Bros of Geelong. Legacy clubs ran classes for junior legatees for many years such as gymnastics, swimming or dancing classes. It was part of providing for the children of their deceased comrades. The skills they learned were show cased in an annual demonstration usually at the Melbourne Town Hall. It appears to be photo taken professionally, as there are several photos of different classes (see 00862 - 00873) perhaps to record Legacy classes for promotion purposes. This cup, made in Melbourne, is a 1946 award for a table tennis competition in the Warrnambool district. The P.C.S.A. may stand for Presbyterian & Congregational Sports Association, with the trophy being won by the Congregational Church team. The donor’s initials, W.Y.M.C., may stand for Warrnambool Young Men’s Club. The Warrnambool Congregational Church was founded in 1862 with a church opened in Liebig Street in 1864. This church was sold and a new one opened in Henna Street in 1940. In 1979, after the Congregational Church merged with the Methodist Church, the Henna Street church was sold to the Salvation Army.This cup is of interest as an example of a Warrnambool sports trophy given over 70 years ago.This is a small silver cup mounted on a brown Bakelite base. This trophy was won by the West End Football Club in 1937. This football team appears to date back from the late 1890s but it is known that it was competing in the early 1900s in the Thursday afternoon matches in the Warrnambool and District Football Association. In the 1930s it was in the Warrnambool Football Association competition and about the 1960s it amalgamated with Allansford to form the West End Allansford Football Club. The name West End disappeared in 2001 when the name changed to Allansford Football Netball Club. No further information has been found on the J.Earls Cup.Although this trophy is in poor condition it is interesting as a memento of a local club that existed for over 100 years.This is a gold-coloured cup with a slender tapering piece resting on a circular base. The base is on a brown Bakelite stand. The cup has had two side handles but one handle is missing. The stand has a silver-coloured plaque. The cup and plaque are much stained and oxidized. ‘W.F.A. J. Joh Ebeli and Russell Yeoman set up further items on the trailer loaned by Denis McKay. An important part of the event was the members who came along in their “old gear” to complete the picture. The Cassie Football Club was part of the Young Men's Castellorizian Club (YMCS), 1962 - 1965, an organisation established within the Castellorizian Association of Victoria to cater for the sporting, social and leisure pursuits of the second and third generations of the Castellorizian youth in Melbourne. Whilst the football team was the main focus for both players and supporters, the YMCS also fielded cricket and debating teams. This football trophy was awarded to the Best & Fairest for the 3 years of the club's duration - N Constance 1963, N Constance 1964 and L Scotis 1965. This item is of social significance as it represents the hey day of the club, with both an active ladies and men's group supporting the youth. Membership was at its peak across the organisation and the generations, with the sporting teams becoming a key focus of social events. Horrie Petley Memorial (Tray) Donor: Deed of Gift: Horace (Horrie) Petley was an honorary life member of RBYC joining the club in 1887, later retiring from active racing aged 78 years. The M113 LRV had ' swimming' capability, but required preparation before entering deep water.The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. A photo of a group of female junior legatees in sporting outfits. There are 20 girls of various ages, and 1 lady who could be the instructor. Legacy clubs ran classes for junior legatees for many years such as gymnastics, swimming or dancing classes. It was part of providing for the children of their deceased comrades. The skills they learned were show cased in an annual demonstration usually at the Melbourne Town Hall. It appears to be photo taken professionally, as there are several photos of different classes (see 00862 - 00873) perhaps to record Legacy classes for promotion purposes. A note with the photo identifies two young ladies; "Kneeling at the front Michelle and Anne O'Connor. During 1910-11 the first approaches were made to the Department for the establishment of a HES in Orbost and this became a reality in 1912. Orbost HES supplied post-primary education in the district until a high school was built in 1948. Orbost High School / Orbost Secondary College has played a significant part in the education of senior students in the Orbost district . It is the sole senior educational institution. An unstrung, DWG & Co. flat-top tennis racquet, presented as a trophy, with ribbon collar, leather crown protector, and unique wood mosaic inlay along length of shaft and handle. Manufacturer's details impressed across throat on reverse. Silver plaque nailed to throat on obverse, featuring the engraved inscription: TOURNAMENT/SHARON SPRINGS/JULY 15TH 1885/SINGLES/WON BY/VALENTINE/G. HALL. These are two pennants awarded to the winners of the Victorian Indoor Bias Bowls Association (perhaps the Warrnambool division) in 1980 and 2003. The winners were presumably the members of the St. John’s Bowls Club (associated with the Presbyterian Church, Warrnambool) as these pennants come from their collection. St. John’s Bowls Club was prominent in Warrnambool in the 20th century but was disbanded in the second decade of the 21st century. The Henselite company that sponsored these trophies is an Australian company that is the biggest manufacturer of lawn bowls world-wide. R.W.Hensell was the first to produce the plastic bowl in 1930 when the company was formed. These two pennants are of interest because they came from the St. John’s Bowls Cub in Warrnambool, a club no longer existing. Bowls is a very popular sport in Australia. These are two pennants from the Victorian Indoor Bias Bowls Association. Both are triangular in shape and made of felt cloth. One is white with a dark blue edging stitched on and dark blue lettering stamped on. Kristin McFARLANE An Australian artist who combines graphic design, glass, botanical specimens, photography, encaustic painting, print and typography to explore fragility, nature and beauty. Kristin studied graphic design followed by a Graduate Diploma and Master of Fine Arts in glass at Monash University, Melbourne. Since graduating in 2004 she has undertaken public and private commissions and exhibitions including works for the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Monash University and Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan. Kristin designed and created the trophies for the Australian of The Year Awards from 2005-2014. These glass panels celebrate the history of the Monash University site; its early days as Berwick showgrounds and Casey Arifield to its current use as a state of the art educational centre. This publication was produced in the early 1950s to provide the growing tourism trade (at this time), to the region with a more detailed overview of the facilities available to tourists of the region's attractions. This brochure is a very efficient and effective promotional publication. The increasing level of self promotion by local business and commerce sectors of the region the more sought after the region became and the greater the ability of the region to grow (non rural based economy). Some of the regions unique facilities and geological structures are well suited to those tourists who live in cities and "flat land" regional bush areas within Australia. This was a period when the average Australian domestic tourist was more able (finance and transport wise) to see more of their country within the short time they had for "holidays". In the late 1900s, however, with the increase to workers' recreational leave and better transportation (fares, ease of travel to overseas destinations) the local tourism numbers from other domestic locations have been steadily declining. From the 1970s onwards, the increased tourism demand from overseas tourists, for better facilities and easier access to these regional facilities, resulted in better transport, accommodation and communication, which has been a boon for all tourism within Australia. In the 21st century the world is becoming smaller and smaller for the international tourist, especially for those from crowded Asian cities. The greater attraction for "open" spaced locations such as this region are becoming a much sought after change of scenery. This pamphlet which targets the tourist, whether either from other Australian regions or the global tourist, is a good example of self promotion by a relatively small local population. This is especially significant because before the "tourist explosion" in the 1950s onward, these regional areas had a more introspective society with greater emphasis to locally established mores and values. The increased interactions with people from other areas and nations, combined with a greater global communication network is affecting those traditionally established mores to produce a some what unique social transformation which is constantly changing from one generation to the next. One important factor which tourism does bring is that it opens up the region to a wider range of people who look to the region for their own lifestyle changes.This pamphlet has a front cover in colour with the major activities in the region sketched depicting : sunshine, snow skiing, trout fishing, mountain climbing, golfing, swimming, alpine views, tennis, lawn bowls and picnics. The back cover is blank. The pamphlet is fastened together by two staples 30mm from top and bottom, and is folded with the cover slightly thicker than the fifteen pages. Thirteen pages have been printed on both sides. The first page has a black and white photograph of the hotel Alpine and the tall brick constructed Clock Tower.
