To the left of him, is a photo of his corner store, with workers in the street at front (eighteen people). In front of the store is also a horse and carriage and a horse drawn wagon loaded with bags of produce (wheat?). Newspaper clippings of 'Chemistry Teacher dies', Mr Richard Gaston Walker, died 14/01/?? A chemistry instructor, 50 years of teaching, he was known world wide, during WW1, he was given an important post in England handling chemistry projects in the war effort. On his return to Australia, he became attached to the Bendigo Technical College,(known as the School of Mines) for more than 40 years. On file there is a Richard Gaston Walker died 1965, aged 72, Death Reg.No.1953). Newspaper photo of Richard's son, David G.Walker, Member of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day Honours List. Document - ADDRESS TO MRS C HEINZ, May 1896
Conrad Heinz (1846-13/2/1896) was born in Germany and came to Australia aged 15. He married Franziska Ingelfinger in 1866. He established the Happy Valley Butchers shop in 1872 with his two brothers. This continued to expand and eventually moved to Korong Road. He was patron of the Bendigo Athletics Club and was elected unopposed to the Barkly Ward of the Bendigo council in 1892 and served as Mayor and Chief Magistrate in 1894. He died of cancer of the knee after preferring Chinese traditional medicines rather than the advised amputation.Address to Mrs. C. Heinz. Dear Madam. We are directed by the members of the Bendigo Athletic Club to express to you their deepest sympathy in the great loss you have sustained by the death of your late beloved husband the late Mayor.
