Description from Newsletter No. 236, Oct. 2017 : A 50th Anniversary Panel of EDHS Members As this meeting is close to the 50th anniversary of the first meeting of the Shire of Eltham Historical Society, on 24th October 1967, we will appropriately look back on our own history. This will include a panel of members who will highlight some of our experiences and achievements along the way. As a special 50th anniversary treat we will have the opportunity to view, for the first time, a video reflecting on the first 50 years of our Society. This video, produced by Gerald Ashcroft from www.storiestobetold.com.au, is based around interviews with Russell Yeoman and Doug Orford about their recollections. The camera belonged to Benjamin Marshman LONG No 97 Australian Remount Unit 1 Sqd 1. He enlisted on 15.9.1915 aged 47 years. Serving overseas he was hospitalised on 26.4.1916 with heat stroke. He was discharged from the AIF on 5.12.1916 as the unit was disbanded. He had 3 sons in the AIF. Horace (Swag) No 437, 9th & 4th L.H. Regt - he was hospitalised 3 times with various illnesses. Benjamin (Marsh) No 439, 4th L.H.Regt - he was hospitalised twice necessitating a return to Australia. Reuben (Rube) No 2192, 4th reinforcements 60th Batt AIF - he was WIA in France twice. These medallions were awarded to school children to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Commonwealth of Australia. This winning design depicts the seed caster with the seven ears of wheat representing the seven states and territories of Australia.
