Slide, Toys, 1963
Colour slide of large number of toys collected for distribution. There were wooden rocking horses and planes. Also soft toys such as Humpty Dumpty, teddies and koalas. The toys were part of an arrangement with the Department of Education. Schools would produce the toys, often in wood work classes and they were donated to Legacy and Carry On. The toys were given to Junior Legatees at the Government House Christmas Party. Excess toys were passed to a dozen additional charities. The whiteboard of statistics show the scheme started in 1949 and by 1962 over 8,200 toys were donated, from 201 schools. The total to that date was over 72,500 toys. It appears to be 1963 as there was space for the tally to be completed. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. Macdonald operated the shop from 1923-1962 (39 years) An early photo exists of the Blacksmith Shop. It stood on what is now part of the landscaped area of the Melton Community Hall. The three blacksmiths wearing aprons are from the left, W. Whittington, G. Macdonald and A Falconer. MacDonald were employed by Whittington prior to each one in turn taking over the business, Falconer soon after selling the to MacDonald, died. He is buried in the Melton Cemetery. The old Smithy [on the right] stood in what is now 8 High Street Melton. The blacksmith and wheelwright was the forerunner of the modern motor mechanic, whose task it was and is, to keep the wheels of locomotion turning. According to the records there was a Blacksmith in Melton before 1850. In 1871, three blacksmiths, Messrs. A Blackwood, J MacPherson, and A Cameron were operating in Melton. In 1872 Mr. J.B. Whittington commenced as a blacksmith in Toolern Vale. On January 30th 1900, Mr Alexander Blackwood sold the property shown in the picture to J.B. Whittington where his son William Whittington conducted the business. William’s three children attended Melton State School No 340 The family left the district in 1921 when they moved to Essendon. Mr William Whittington died in 1963 at the age of 94. The next owner of the business, for a short period, was Mr. Ackland Falconer, who was succeeded by Mr A.G. Gordon MacDonald, in September 1923. Mr MacDonald raised a family of three. Thirty nine years later, in 1962, he retired, going to live with his son Robert in Sunshine, and the blacksmith shop finally closed its doors. This part of Melton’s history was demolished in by order of the Housing Commission, in 1966. Article research by Melton and District Historical Society Members. note: spelling should be Macdonald. Memento for Vietnam Veterans National Memorial, 1990s
The Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial is located on Anzac Parade in Canberra, the Nation's Capital. In May 1988 the Federal Government announced its support for the project. In August 1988 the first official Vietnam Veterans’ Day was held. In September, the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Ben Humphries, launched two television commercials designed to encourage donations and handed over a cheque for $12,500. Subsequent support from the Federal Government brought this to $250,000. However the bulk of the funds cam from public donation, together with some corporate sponsorship. The final cost for the memorial was just over $1.2 million. (info. from Vietnam Veterans association of Australia web-site)This item is significant in that it is a reminder of the history and experiences of the veterans of the Vietnam War and the enduring impact of the war on society.A framed momento of Vietnam War. black and white photograph, Warren, Mrs H, late 19th century - early 20th century
This is a photograph of Percy Nixon's sons - Jack, Allen, Pres, Keith and Jim. The photographer was Warren, Helena (1871-1962) who was a self-taught photographer who became both the local press correspondent and a producer of humorous trompe l'oeil postcard images. Helena Warren was a thirty-two year old settler living on a small mixed farm with her husband, William, at Newmerella, near Orbost in Gippsland, Victoria, when she bought her first camera, an Austral Box quarter-plate. Her family says she was entirely self-taught, like many women photographers who started out with nothing but the instructions on the packets of film and chemicals. In over fifty years practice she graduated from the total novice, who opened all her first mail order plates in bright sunlight and ruined them, to a competent photographer who became both the local press correspondent and an inveterate producer of humorous trompe l’oeil postcard images. This photograph has significance in its association with Helen Frances Warren, a popular Orbost identity who was well known as an accomplished photographer and needleworker. This set of 30 photographs of the Army Survey Regiment’s Fortuna Villa and surrounding facilities was taken circa 1985. The photos feature much of Fortuna’s exterior and most of the out-buildings spread over the property’s fifteen acres of grounds. After Defence took possession of Fortuna in 1942, the Q-store and engineering workshops were added during the wartime period. Soldiers were accommodated in tents during WW2 for 20 years next to the parade ground before the construction of accommodation buildings in 1962. In 1990 most of the weatherboard buildings in the Q-store area were replaced. A climate-controlled building was also constructed to house a map library and digital data media. This photo set also includes the exterior of Air Survey Squadron’s Building 16 and two modular buildings -16A and 16B that were added in the early 1980s to accommodate map production and technical services. Box, Bouquet of Roses Toilet Soap, Mid 20th century
The business of Kitchen and Sons began in 1856 when John Kitchen began to make tallow candles in their backyard in Emerald Hill but had to move two years later due to it being an offensive trade. Bad luck plagued them again after two years when fire destroyed their premises. However after rebuilding , the expanded and moved to Footscray ten years later. Over the next 30years the business expanded further employing upwards of 300 people and became one of the leading manufacturers of soaps, candles and associated products in Australia and New Zealand. They were makers of long standing brands such as Velvet soap and Solvol and by the mid 1920's were employing about 1400 people. It was around this time that they merged with the Lever Co of Sydney and after absorption of other soap companies over the next 40 years , the company became known as Lever & Kitchen in 1962. This box contained gift soaps and probably belongs to the period prior to 1924. Miss C M Trigg of Wangoom was the owner. Melbourne Legacy
Slide, Toys, 1963
Colour slide of two legatees and a school boy near a large number of toys collected for distribution. One man is Ivan Layton the CEO of Legacy for 30 years. The scheme started in 1949 and by 1962 over 8,200 toys were donated, from 201 schools. The total to that date was over 72,500 toys. It appears to be 1963 as there was space for the tally to be completed. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. In many cases the original images were not well focussed and the digital image is the best available.A record of toys donated to Legacy in the 1960s.Colour slide of two legatees thanking a school boy near a table stacked with toys, in a white plastic mount and grey mount on the reverse. The board in the photo says 'These toys are distributed to the Legacy and Carry-On clubs. Uniform - Wodonga High School Blazer pocket and program for the new school's official opening, 1965
Post primary education in Wodonga began in 1923 when the existing primary school, which opened in 1857, became the Wodonga Central School. It extended students for a further 2 years of secondary schooling. In 1938 the school was declared a higher elementary school with 90 students in the secondary classes. Following rapid growth after the Second World War, the High School was established as a separate school in 1954 with 249 students and the primary students were relocated to premises in Ariel Street. However it rapidly became evident that a new school building needed to be established to cater for growing enrolments and specialist facilities. After persistent pressure from the Advisory Council, Stage 1 of the new school was built and occupied by Form 1 and 2 students in 1960. The final stages were completed during term 3, 1962. The official opening of the new Wodonga High School was declared by The Hon. J. S. Bloomfield M.L.A., Minister for Education, on Friday 30th April 1965.This program marks the an important occasion in the development of secondary education in Wodonga.A pocket from a Wodonga High School blazer made of a wool blend fabric. It is embroidered with the school logo featuring an open book and a torch combined with the school motto. The motto "Labora ut Servias", translates as "Work to Serve”.
