Sport has never been more competitive in the 1950s to the 1980s than it is today, nor its practitioners more clearly cast in the role of competitors. It is as such that the photographs in the book portray modern sports men and women capturing the intense effort, concentration, physical and mental prowess that is required of them. On page 19 and 135 it shows Cliff Young driving through the rain and shine on his way to winning the Melbourne to Sydney marathon. Competitors: the sports experience. Royal District Nursing Service (now known as Bolton Clarke)
Photograph - Photograph, black and white, Barry Sutton, 22.06.1977
The RDNS Sister is visiting the mother and babe in their home. She is using sterile equipment and swabs to firstly moisten the tulle gras to enable ease of its removal before redressing the open areas on the babes skin with sterile dressings. With RDNS visiting the home of the mother, the young babes routine can continue to be established at home, rather than them having to regularly visit a Doctor or Hospital department for redressing of the babes lesions. The Trained nurses (Nurses) of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), from its inception in 1885, provided wound care to their patients who ranged in age from the very young to the elderly. The patients required their wounds to be dressed following various types of surgery, accidents, burns, skin conditions, cancer, leg ulcers etc. As research developed better products and dressing materials, the methods and medication applied to wounds changed. MDNS received Royal patronage in 1966 and as Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), the Education department developed wound care programs, such as the Leg Ulcer Management Program to provide their Trained nurses (Sisters) with methods of best quality care. They ran a program for Wound Care Specialists who made assessments and provided advice and support to the District Sisters working in the field as needed. The Sisters liaised with the patient’s Doctors and Hospitals to provide information on the progress of patient’s wounds and to receive any change of wound care from the Doctors. On the left in the black and white photograph is a Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), Sister, who has short, straight blonde hair, and is wearing a white gown over her uniform is bending over a bassinet as she attends a baby with a skin condition. The Sister has her arms extended with a pair of forceps in her left hand, and in her right hand, another pair of forceps with a cotton wool swab attached is touching tulle gras on one of the wounds on the babes outstretched right arm. The baby is on her covered change table and is wearing a singlet and an opened patterned jumpsuit with her right upper area uncovered. Her mother, who has short dark hair and is wearing a dark sleeveless V neck tunic style frock over a light coloured long sleeve top, is behind and bending over the change table holding her babes right outstretched hand. She is also holding a dummy in that hand. The mother's left extended arm and hand is on the left shoulder of her babe. The baby, who has sparse hair, is looking up at her mother; signs of a skin condition can be seen on areas of the babes face and head.Photographer stamp. Washing board
Wooden framed wash board with zinc coated corrugated steel board insert. Wooden frame consists of two legs three supporting wooden rods on back side of tin board and top and bottom wooden slates. Tin board has small holes all throughout. On wooden top the "Advantages of the board" are printed.Printed on wood on top of back side of board. "Advantages of this board. 1. No "Protector" is Needed. The water goes through the holes and never wets the apron of the operator. 2. The holes enable you to rapidly force both air and suds through the fabric, and so hasten the cleaning process. 3. The nicely "arched" surface is much easier to wash on than the orsinary flat surface. 4. Is, light, strong, durable, always retains its shape and never sags. 5. Has no board back to retain moisture and corrode the zinc. 6. Is very easy on the clothes. Do not have to rub them all to pieces to get them clean. Soon pays for itself on this count alone. 7. Is not only THE FASTEST WORKER IN USE, but is already coming into more general demand than any other wash board in the world. 8. If the saving of a womens strength is worth anything the labour saving qualities of this board would make it well worth $1.00. The WAMA Project : The National Centre for Environmental Art
Painting, Marianne Wehl (1867 - 1926), Untitled (Epacris impress - Common Heath), c1887 to 1924
The artist: Marianne Louise Charlotte Amalie Wehl (19 Sept. 1867, Mt Gambier; 26 Oct. 1926, Melbourne), a flower painter who was active in South Australia and Victoria, and not to be confused with Marie Magdalene Wehl. Connection with Baron von Mueller: Von Mueller’s younger sister, Clara married Doctor Eduard Wehl and they lived in South Australia. They had 14 children, 6 of whom collected and painted botanical studies – some now in the National Herbarium, Melbourne. A cousin of Doctor Wehl – Carl Wehl – married Sophia Caroline (née Gorte) and one of their daughters was Marianne Wehl. It is recorded that von Mueller visited the Wehls and D’Altons in Halls Gap (Henrietta D'Alton was also a painter of wildflowers), so it is hard to believe that there is no influence at least. Von Mueller had over 1,400 collectors/artists working for him and 225 of them were women and children. Their work is housed in the National Herbarium, Melbourne. The donor believes that Marianne contributed to this work. There is no record of that, however, as only 169 of the artists have been identified, it may be a possibility. Marianne was one of six children of Carl Jakob Wilhelm Wehl (1830–1899) and Sophia Caroline Wehl (née Gorte) (1843–1920). She never married. https://data.environment.sa.gov.au/Content/Publications/JABG34P001_Dowe.pdf The plants: All of the plants painted by Marianne Wehl's in this donation were identified by Botanist Neil Marriott & Wendy Marriott, in July 2022. Neil Marriott said that the quality and beauty of these botanical studies made it easy for them to identify all the plants. He suggested they may be some of the first paintings of Grampians wildflowers. This makes the paintings highly important scientifically and botanically. Visitors to WAMA will be able to compare them with today’s plants in the Endemic Garden. Neil marvelled that Marianne found the specimens, as some of them are endemic and found only in the highest parts of the Grampians (Mt Rosea, Mt William and Major Mitchell Plateau) and are listed as rare and endangered. Some of these same rare plants have now been propagated by the WAMA team and in winter 2022 were planted in WAMA's Endemic Garden. Neil identifies this plant as Epacris impressa - Common Heath - white flower form. Common and widespread. Shovel head - Fainter Falls
The Fainter Falls Walking Track was originally accessible via a fire fighting access trail, which was used by fire-fighters putting out spot fires caused by lightening strikes. The fires in the summer of 2003, highlighted the beauty of this area and provided the residents with the opportunity to consider the redevelopment of the trail. Work to establish a 700 metre grade 2 walking trail with a 50 metre grade 3 extension trail to the Falls began in 2005. It also includes 3 observation decks, a bridge over a creek crossing, car parking and interpretative signage. The shovel was found during work on the Fainter Falls track. It was left there some time ago by a previous visitor to the Falls indicating that the Falls were accessible and attracted visitors many years ago.Rusty metal shovel head curved on each side and rounded at the front. At the back of the blade it is attached on top with 3 nails to the top piece. The top metal piece overlaps the blade by 6.5 cm longitudinally x 5 cm across. On the back the metal piece overlaps the blade by 12 cm both longitudinally and across the handle end but tapers to a point. It has 6 nails attaching it. Both metal pieces are attached to the blade and curve parallel and around so that a wooden handle would fit between them. This would have 2 nails passing through both metal pieces and the handle. Book - Religious, University Press, The Holy Bible, Ca. 1850s
This Bible belonged to the Bell family. Joseph Bell was born on May 9th 1829. He married Elizabeth, who was born on October 22nd, 1833. Their marriage was conducted on September 12th, 1854, at St Pauls, Bristol, England. On the front pages of the bible there used to be a list of their ten children and their birthdates but there are only remnants of a heavy weight paper; the opposite Fly page with publication details is also missing, along with the Family Records section, which no longer has pages for Births and Marriages, only precise edges of two pages . The Bible is the King James Version, named after James Charles Stuart (1556-1625) who was King James VI of Scotland from 24 July 1567, and who was crowned King James I of England, France and Ireland from 24 March 1603 until his death in 1625. The Hampton Court Conference of 1604 commissioned a new and more accurate version of the Holy Bible that was translated from the original Sacred Scriptures and that included only the approved books. This task was undertaken be a group of learned scholars who worked in teams and compared notes, working to ensure a true and accurate version. It was completed in 1611 and became widely known as the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible and is still widely used and greatly respected for its poetic language. The first printed page of this Bible is the Translators Speech at the completed work which was handed over to King James I in 1611.This Bible was published after 1611, and likely to have been purchased at the time of the marriage of the previous owners, Joseph and Elizabeth Bell, in 1854, so it is possibly a century and a half old. The decorative cover and metal clasp are a sign that the Bible was a book to be treasured,. Indeed, our Collection included several Bibles brought to Australia by immigrants, even though luggage was tightly restricted. This Bible was once used as a family record, similar to Bibles printed in modern times, with lined blank pages in the centre for the owners to record their own, their ancestors' and their descendants' life events. Sadly, these pages are no longer within the Bible.Book, black textured leather front and back covers, gold leaf page edges, metal clasp on centre edge of front and back covers holds them together. The title is inscribed in gold embossing on the front cover. The Bible has coloured illustrations, cross references and maps. The front inside cover has remnants of a previous stuck-down page, the Fly page, and the Family Records pages for Births and Marriages has been cut out of the book. TITLE: The Holy Bible.
