Dana Street Primary School still educates children in Ballarat. The old bluestone section of the school has been used as an early campus of the Ballarat Junior Technical School, as well as a campus of the Ballarat Teachers' College. In 1856 a printed notice was distributed around Ballarat announcing that Mr and Mrs C. Marin were opening a school in Doveton Street on 12 January 1857. The National School, supported by the Church of Christ, opened with 80 pupils, and attendance was between 9am and 12 noon, and 1pm and 3pm. On 12 March 1859 James Oddie, Peter Lalor, Dr James Stewart, Robert Lewis, J.B. Gray and C.J. The “Saf-T-Coil” (Julius Schmid Laboratories, Little Falls, New Jersey, USA) IUD was a first generation IUD that entered manufacturing in 1965 and was one of the first inert type plastic IUDs to be commonly used. It was also one of the first to adopt the familiar T-shape of IUDs still used today. It was accepted during its time as being generally safe, effective and easy to insert, with low expulsion rates due to its bulky frame. Production was halted in 1982 for economic reasons as newer contraceptive methods gained popularity. (Madden et al. Constructed for 50th anniversary of the Young Sun newspaper special trains that ran between Upper Ferntree Gully and Belgrave in 1954. In 1954, special trains sponsored by The Sun newspaper, were run to farewell Puffing Billy. Constructed during the overhaul of locomotive G 42 in 1954/1955. This stack was the exhaust for the coal fired Garratt locomotive G 42 and replaced the ornate stack it had been built with by Beyer Peacock in England in 1926. The overhaul was carried out between it's last run on the Moe to Walhalla railway and prior to locomotive being placed in service, for the first time, on the Colac to Beech Forest railway line. The stack remained in use until 1962, when the locomotive was withdrawn, and was still connected to the boiler until restoration of G 42 was undertaken. Locomotive G 42, with its replica ornate stack, was restored by the Puffing Billy Preservation Society in 2004 and can be seen operating on the Puffing Billy Railway. Robert GORDON Robert 'Andy' Gordon is a potter supplying ceramic wares to stores across Australia as well as exporting to Canada, the U.S.A. and New Zealand. to China. Robert and his wife Barbara started making pottery in 1979 in a tin shed at Gembrook in the Dandenongs, Victoria, which they called the Pack Track Pottery, selling their wares at the St Kilda markets. This dress belonged to Mary Grace Medbury (nee Matthews, 1885-1967). Mary was born in Kansas, USA, and as a teenager travelled to Devon, England, before she came to Australia with her family and married Walter Ambrose Medbury (1887-1947). They lived together in Cheel Street, East Oakleigh. Walter, a building contractor, worked on numerous construction projects in the Melbourne area, including the Oakleigh Methodist Church, the HMAS Cerberus naval base and - closer to home - the former Brighton Courthouse, which was built in 1936 and still stands at 15 Boxshall Street. Mary gave the dress to her granddaughter, Fiona Nissen, when Fiona was a teenager. Was located in the stables at Mount Buffalo Chalet. It was used to record the names of horses that were ridden by Chalet guests when they were holidaying at the Chalet. 'Admiring the rugged beauty of the Buffalo Plateau and exploring its scenic attractions ...quickly became part of the Mount Buffalo Chalet tourist experience...The Chalet facilitated the experience by hosting guided tours, including trail rides on horseback...the horses remained at the Chalet for decades, and have been remembered with great affection, as demonstrated by the honour roll for Chalet horses and various commemorative plaques.' Four Mordialloc-Chelsea High School students outside the school Tuck Shop on the corner of Attenborough Road and Station Street Aspendale. The shop was located across from the school and run by Mr Gustav Fahnert and his family. Mrs Rubina Fahnert nee Brown was the daughter of Thomas Brown who was a son of Hugh Brown, the pioneer market gardener of the Aspendale/Mordialloc area. The Brown's house still remains on the second block from the corner of Station Street and Attenborough Road (as of February 2018). The paper label mentions the tall ships race in 1988 - this was part of the Australian Bicentenary celebrations marking 200 years since the arrival of the First Fleet of British convict ships. Photos show the Legatees and widows marching along St Kilda Road past the Melbourne Concert Hall behind a bagpipe band - it was Widows' Sunday when there is a service at the Shrine for the Legacy Widows. An article in The Answer newsletter in September 1993 mentions that the Legatees and widows set off from St Pauls Cathedral in a 'Pilgrimage to the the Shrine' behind the Hawthorn City Pipe Band. There may be more photos and a proof sheet still to come. It is assumed to be 1993 Widows Sunday as Legatee John Stevenson is in the front row, he was president in 1993 which was Legacy's 70th Anniversary. 'Messrs. George Phillips and Richard Williams erected a water wheel crushing machine near the site of the Old Albert shaft at Diamond Hill'. ( Bendigo Advertiser 4th June, 1890). The lack of water available for the venture from the water race caused much controversy in the following years. There was only enough water available in July 1890, to allow the company to operate three head of a ten head stamper. The site of the water wheel is still visible on the side of the water race at Diamond Hill. Mr. Geo Phillips held 1000 shares in the float of the Kangaroo Hydraulic Crushing & Gold Mining Company. This old apple tree situated beside the Plenty River Trail at Greensborough has been associated with Melbourne Founder John Batman. The concrete block is inscribed with the date 1841, when the tree was thought to have been planted. Known as Batman's Tree, this apple tree is on the bank of the Plenty River near Leischa Court, Greensborough. It is said that Melbourne Founder John Batman may have planted the tree and later signed his treaty here with the Aboriginal people. It still bears fruit and its recorded on the National Trust's Register of Significant Trees, as the oldest apple tree in Victoria. The photograph shows the demolition or removal of the cable tram track at the intersection of Smith Street and Gertrude St Fitzroy, 1954/55. Photo shows the workmen excavating and demolishing parts of the massive infrastructure needed at this curve to enable cable trams to pass around the sharp curve, still one of the sharpest on today's Melbourne tram system. The outside cable tram track remains in position. The MMBW plan shows a large cable sheave pit on the outside of the curve. The 1955 Annual Report notes that work commenced following the completion of the Queen's visit in March 1954 and that all work was done by day-labour. The track was opened to service in late June 1955. Trunk belonged to Godfrey Hirst and was used in his travels between Australian and England. Godfrey Hirst's first trip to Australia was in 1885 and his last trip was in 1916. In this time Hirst was known to travel between Australia and England regularly on the lookout for the latest updates from England that he could bring to his factory in Geelong. The trunk was donated by Susan Wiffen (née Betts), the great granddaughter of Godfrey Hirst. Godfrey Hirst set up a successful woollen textile factory in Geelong in 1888. The factory stayed in operation until 1966. The company still bearing his name has since been purchased by various investment companies but continues to be the largest carpet manufacturer in Australia. Predominately black trunk with two wooden bands around the sides of the trunk and five across the top (lid). The lid is slightly curved and contains white printed lettering GODFREY HIRST. The trunk also contains small wheel underneath locked for pushing the trunk sideways only. The trunk contains two leather handles on either side. Internally, the trunk contains three levels of storage with baskets stackable on top of one another. The baskets are finished in a white and brown striped fabric which has red taped edging for additional strength. The top layer of baskets also has brown leather latches in order to keep the basket lids shut. The layered levels of storage are synonymous of Saratoga style trunk.Printed. A range of souvenirs depicting local landmarks were produced to represent and promote Wodonga and other towns throughout much of the 20th century. THE WATER TOWER is a major landmark of High Street, Wodonga. It began operation from 1924 until it ceased operation in 1959. It stood unused for a decade until the lower section was modified and put to use as “The Tower’s Cobbler’s Inn” in 1962. In 1972 Wodonga City Council proposed to demolish the Tower. Their suggestion received an unfavorable response from the city’s citizens, so the Tower still stands today. THE SOLDIERS' MEMORIAL in Wodonga was unveiled on Tuesday 18th November 1924. These labels come from the pharmacy business of R.F.Kennedy who sold Lectar Company products and used a lighthouse image as his logo. Richard Kennedy (1826-1903), a wholesale, retail and manufacturing chemist in Timor Street, came to Warrnambool in 1880 and had what was described in the ‘Cyclopedia of Victoria’ as ‘the largest and best-appointed pharmacy in Victoria’. Kennedy was the Vice-President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Victoria, on the Pharmacy Board and was prominent in community affairs n Warrnambool. He also made local perfumes with many varieties named after people or events of the time – Nellie Melba, Federation etc. His pharmacy building in Timor Street and his house in Canterbury Road (“Ivanhoe”) still stand today.These labels are of some interest as they are associated with the Warrnambool business of the chemist, R.F.Kennedy.
