Tool - Marking Gauge, Believed to be homemade between 1900 to 1940s given no makers marks and the naivety of its construction
A marking gauge, also known as a scratch gauge, is used in woodworking and metalworking to mark out lines for cutting or other operations. The purpose of the gauge is to scribe a line parallel to a reference edge or surface. It is used in joinery and sheet metal work operations. The gauge consists of a beam, a headstock, and a scribing or marking implement, typically a pin, knife, pen or wheel. The headstock slides along the beam and is locked in place by various means: a locking screw, cam lever, or a wedge. The marking implement is fixed to one end of the beam. These types of gauges have been in use for many centuries and have not changed much in their design. An item that has not changed in use since its inception many hundreds of years ago. These types of marking gauges used by cabinet and joinery makers to mark or scribe their work for cutting are still produced and used today in many sizes by professional cabinet makers and individuals.Cabinet makers marking gauge, wooden, two adjustable staffs secured be a wedge through the block. Tools, stainless steel pen-knife, 20thC
A penknife, or pen knife, is a small folding knife. It was originally used to describe a knife used for cutting or sharpening a quill to make a dip pen nib. Originally, penknives were used for thinning and pointing quills to prepare them for use as writing instruments and, later, for repairing or re-pointing the quills. They did not necessarily have folding blades, but resembled a scalpel or wood knife by having a short, fixed blade at the end of a long handle. Today a penknife can have single or multiple blades, and with additional tools incorporated into the design. The most famous example of a multi-function penknife is the Swiss Army knife A folding pen-knife with 2 stainless steel bladeson long blade end; STAINLESS / MADE IN / SHEFFIELDpen-knife, scouts, cheltenham, moorabbin, bentleigh, tools, early settlers -

Book, Government Printer, Potato diseases in Australia, 1911
Potatoes are known for their great liability to disease, suffering more from the ravages of fungi than any other crop, and this is largely owing to the fact that they are propagated from tubers which are just swollen portions of underground branches of the stem. Portions of the parent plant in the form of tubers or cuttings are planted year after year, so that any inherent weakness in the original is transmitted to the offspring, and therefore, without a process of selection, deterioration is sure to occur sooner or later. When the tubers are raised from seed and a good selection made from them, they are less liable to disease at least for a number of years. Photograph, Lavers Hill: Train and repair gang, 1913, 1913
For two years after the opening of the Colac-Beech Forest railway line trains were preceded by a ganger on a trolley to ensure no landslips or wash-a-ways created a danger to the trains. Afterwards the trains continued on their own. The line was built as cheaply as possible, "a mere skeleton of a railway" as one Victorian Railways spokesperson commented. With earthworks specified to the bare minimum landslips in the cuttings and wash-a-ways in sloping areas were always a problem, particularly in the early years before the works had time to settle. The line to Crowes was built to open in 1911 and a wash-a-way between Lavers Hill and Crowes was only to be expected. Boots General Purpose (GP)
These boots had a metal plate inserted in sole to protect the feet of personnel wearing boot. This was after earlier boots without this protection did not protect the wearer from sharpened spikes eg bamboo set in pits or “punji” pits, during the Vietnam war. The laces were done up by knotting one end, threading from bottom hole across to opposite hole,up next hole on same side, across to opposite hole etc. This meant that only one loop per opposite holes was all exposed for a quick and easy cutting to release the boot in case of injury to wearer. These boots were typically worn on parade, training and in combat during the Vietnam war era and after. The LEFT boot solid black leather uppers with split leather tongue sewn to sides - making the boot semi water and insect proof. The sole is hard black rubber compound with 7 cleats on sole and 3 cleats on heel, all part of rubber sole. Work on paper - Report, Warrnambool Surf Lifesaving Club, 40th Annual One Mile Swim of the Hopkins River, 1999
The Hopkins River One Mile Swim started in 1960 as part of an Aquatic Day to raise funds for the Warrnambool Olympic Pool. Since 1961 a measured One Mile Course (1600 metres) was used, the course being up river for approx. 286 metres, then to the bridge and back to the jetty to the finishing line. It was a handicap race. The race was abandoned after 46 years (2005). The booklet is of some importance as it gives the details of the Hopkins River One Mile Race, an event that was a prominent one in Warrnambool for 46 years. The booklet records the achievements of the competitors and the work of the committees involved and will be useful for researchers. This is a booklet containing a souvenir program for the 40th Annual One Mile Swim in the Hopkins River in 1999 and a Full Race History from 1960 to 1999. It has been produced in-house by the Warrnambool Surf Lifesaving Club and has a blue cardboard front cover and a grey back cover. The photocopied and typed pages have been bound with black plastic.
