The Kew Baptist Church was originally located on the corner of Cotham Road and St John’s Parade. In 1922, work commenced on a new, larger church in Highbury Grove. The foundation stone of the new building was laid by Cr Ratten of the City of Kew on Saturday 14 October 1922, with the First Kew Scouts forming a guard of honor. A collection taken up at the laying of the foundation stone raised £454. The site and building cost approximately £6,000. The architects for this new red brick ‘semi-Gothic’ church were Messrs Gawler & Drummond. The interior of the church accommodated 500 parishioners. The seating sloped towards the pulpit with no columns obstructing the view of the worshippers. An item from an outstanding and diverse photographic collection, assembled by members of the Christian and Washfold families of Kew. This remarkable photograph is a silver albumen photograph of what was by then a significant religious group in Kew. St.Andrew's Presbyterian Church at Bulla was built on Crown land that the congregation received on 6th September 1858. It overlooks Oaklands Road and the surrounding farms as well as the Tullamarine Airport. The building at the rear is the former manse. It functioned as a place of worship for over 150 years and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2009. Kangaroo Flat Gold Mine Collection. Eight pages (photocopy) of information relating to the Flora Hill Mine, Flora Hill, Bendigo. On first page: 'Bendigo Mining N.L. Mine Information' First two pages contain a summary of the research undertaken by Bendigo Mining N.L. with six additional photocopied pages of annotated copies of mining records. The main Flora Hill Mine shaft 260 ft (79.2m) in Houlahan Street, near Brennan Park Swimming Pool. The Flora Hill reefs were worked from the late 1850's by open cut and shallow shafts, but very little has been recorded about these working or the gold obtained. The Flora Reef Co crushed 200 tons for a return of 25 oz in 1866, a grade suggestive of open cut operations.' The mine was re-opened in 1921, at which time Whitelaw wrote a report. In the words of the donor, Betty Stone, "This fitted writing slope box belonged to Ellis Dale of “Latrigg”, Wangoom, Warrnambool, and has an inscription “E. Dale”, hand written by Ellis on a small brass plaque featured on the lid. Ellis Dale, born 21 November 1860, was the second son of William and Elizabeth Dale, of Dale Bluestone Quarries Wangoom. He worked with his father at the quarries, and continued, after his father's death, to operate the family business with his son lvor until he died, aged 79 years, on 2 August 1940. Although the tradition was that the writing box was originally owned by Ellis's father, William Dale, there is some doubt that he brought it with him from England when he migrated in 1852 - however, we do know that it is at least one hundred years old. (Note: For additional information please refer to my book “Pioneers and Places - A History of three Warrnambool Pioneering Families” ie. Chamberlain, Dale and Lees Families)This item is associated with the Warrnambool pioneer families of Chamberlain, Dale and Lees. These families are listed in the Pioneers' Register for Warrnambool Township and Shire, 1835-1900, published by A.I.G.S. Warrnambool Branch. The item is significant for its association with a ‘glory box’ or hope chest’, a tradition of single ladies making and collecting a range of linen and other domestic items in preparation for their future marriage.Polished wooden Writing Slope or Travellers Desk. Box opens to be a sloped writing desk, with a leather writing surface decorated with a gold leaf border, and several compartments; one has a slightly concaved cover that pivots to open. Leather-covered boards hinge at the centre, and both sides lift, revealing further storage. Brass protectors on top corners, inlaid brass strengthening supports on two corners. Brass slide-releasing catches secure writing base as desk closes. The brass shield centre of the lid is engraved. These packs were Australian army issue to service men and women during World War 2.Many Orbost men served in World War 2. Three field dressing packs made from cloth or waterproof covering and with a black printed label on one side of each pack. The words FIRST FIELD DRESSING and instructions TO OPEN and CONTENTS are printed on each pack. On the bottom of the print area are JOHNSON & JOHNSON PTY LTD, SYDNEY.
