Photograph - Team Photograph, Jacana Primary School: Soccer Team 1983
Jacana Primary School was established in 1959 during a period of rapid suburban development in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. The post-war era saw significant investment in public infrastructure, including schools, to support growing communities shaped by migration and housing expansion. Jacana, located near Broadmeadows, became home to many working-class families, including newly arrived migrants, contributing to a rich and diverse social fabric. By the early 1980s, schools like Jacana Primary were not only centres of education but also vital community hubs. Sporting activities, particularly team sports like soccer, played a central role in student life. They promoted physical health, teamwork, and social inclusion, while also reflecting broader cultural influences—especially as soccer gained popularity among migrant communities. The 1983 soccer team photograph captures this dynamic period, showcasing the importance of extracurricular activities in fostering school spirit and community engagement. It also reflects the values of public education at the time: equity, participation, and the celebration of diversity. Such images serve as enduring records of how schools contributed to shaping local identity and cohesion during a transformative era in Melbourne’s suburban history. This 1983 colour photograph of Jacana Primary School’s soccer team captures the energy and camaraderie of a school that served as a cornerstone of its community from 1959 until its closure in the early 2000s. More than a simple team portrait, the image reflects the vibrant sporting culture that was integral to student life and community engagement during the early 1980s. The photograph preserves cherished memories of teamwork, school pride, and youthful enthusiasm, offering insight into the social dynamics and extracurricular values of the time. It stands as a visual testament to the role of sport in fostering inclusion, resilience, and a sense of belonging among students—qualities that defined Jacana Primary’s enduring legacy in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.A colour photograph of a school Soccer team on satin finish photo paper.PH-4465 (white label) Top Left Corner PH-5431(blue label) Top Right Corner Manufactures mark; Fujicolor/ Paperjacana primary school, photograph, school photograph, education, soccer team, 1983 -

Photograph - Team Photograph, Jacana Primary School: Soccer Team 1989
Jacana Primary School was established in 1959 during a period of significant suburban growth in Melbourne’s northern corridor. Located in the suburb of Jacana, the school was part of a broader post-war initiative to provide accessible public education to families settling in newly developed housing estates. The area became home to a diverse population, including many migrant families, contributing to a rich and evolving community identity. By the late 1980s, Jacana Primary had developed a strong reputation not only for its academic programs but also for its vibrant extracurricular activities. Sport, particularly soccer, played a central role in school life. It was a unifying force that brought students together across cultural and social backgrounds, fostering teamwork, resilience, and school spirit. Soccer’s popularity reflected broader demographic trends, as many students came from communities where the sport held cultural significance. The 1989 soccer team photograph captures this dynamic period in the school’s history. It represents more than athletic achievement—it reflects the values of inclusion, participation, and pride that defined Jacana Primary’s approach to education. The image also serves as a visual record of the school’s role in shaping community cohesion and providing opportunities for personal growth beyond the classroom. Jacana Primary School closed in the early 2000s, but its legacy endures through photographs like this one, which offer valuable insights into the lived experiences of students and the social fabric of Melbourne’s northern suburbs during a time of transformation. This 1989 colour photograph of Jacana Primary School’s soccer team captures the vitality and camaraderie of a school that stood as a pillar of its community from 1959 until its closure in the early 2000s. Far more than a routine team portrait, the image embodies the spirited sporting culture that was central to student life and community connection during the late 1980s. The photograph preserves treasured memories of teamwork, school pride, and youthful enthusiasm, offering a lens into the social atmosphere and extracurricular priorities of the time. It serves as a visual testament to the role of sport in promoting inclusion, resilience, and a sense of belonging—values that were deeply embedded in Jacana Primary’s educational philosophy and community legacy in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.A colour photograph of a school Soccer team on satin finish photo paper.PH-4119 (white label) Top Centre PH-4404(blue label) Top Centre Right Manufactures mark; This paper/ Manufactured/ By Kodakjacana primary school, photograph, school photograph, education, soccer team, 1989 -

Razor Personal Vintage, circa 1940s to 1950s
This item(razor) was used by men, only before fashion dictated that women should shave their legs and underarms. There is information that this razor was first used circa 1922 and it lasted up until circa 1958. It permitted the user to have a compact shaving apparatus at hand in any environment. It provided a safe and easy way of sharpening the more permanent blade. This type of razor replaced the straight, open, or cut-throat razors. The mobility of this item was further enhanced by Gillette with their double bladed disposable razor. Time taken(shaving) and costs involved where crucial factors in the ever growing pace of domestic lifestyle in the post 1920s.This historical item presents that, even though the Kiewa Region was an inland rural settlement which in the 1920's was not as close to "modern" fashions and "gadgets", the basic living conditions where still maintained at city levels. This particular razor was in its heyday a sophisticated safety razor and brought down the demand for the services of the "professional" barber(shaver). One of the problems of the superseded straight razor was the high levels of cuts and nicks to the face. As this particular razor was fairly expensive it would have been used by men who were in the middle to upper socio-economical position in Kiewa Valley before the late 1950'sThis item is a Sheffield steel(stamped inside) metal box(Viscount model) containing a red leather fine shaving strap and in its lid a grey honing stone. Both bottom and top lids are removable to allow for replacements of strap and stone. On the bottom lid appears "The Whetter" trade mark, registered in the U.S.A. in 1950.Three bands of a Greek key pattern has been pressed on the lid. A circled identification inscription. " ROLLS RAZOR Ltd, MADE IN ENGLAND" and patented information appears within this inscription. "Patented in England and Abroad. English patents numbers 467383. 284428. 242718. 242717" On the outside of the base lid within a circle are "ROLLS RAZOR" and the sketch of a long haired naked man (side view), crouched, with both hands stretched forward operating the razor. On a slab underneath are the words "The Whetter"safety razor, non disposable, men's shaving implement -

nails on board, 1885
These nails were made for Walter John Mundy (1868-1944). Often imported nails made for the softer English and North American timbers bent when hammered against the harder colonial woods and so The Mundy family were farmers / settlers in the Snowy River area since c. 1880s. The original Mundy family moved to a land "selection" at Betebolong in the early 1880's from Buchan. It's only over the past century or so that the mass-produced nail has become an inexpensive and common way to join materials. These three iron nails were hand made by an early Orbost settler or blacksmith in the 1880's, using iron, forge and anvil. They are examples of the types of nails used in the 19th century. A rectangular, wooden(athel pine?) board with three hand-made nails glued in fan design to top left corner of section of floorboard. There is a short length of yellow cord attached for hanging. To the right of the nails is hand-written text in black. the nails have irregular shanks and hammer marks on both shanks and heads.right of nails - " Flooring & nails from Walter Mundy's house at Jarrahmond built C.1885. Container - Bottle, Mid-to-late 1800s
This olive green bottle was handmade by a glassblower and is the typical shape of a ‘gallon’ type liquor bottle, which has the capacity of one-sixth of an imperial gallon, about 750ml. It was made around the mid-to-late 1800s. The bottle was recovered from an unnamed shipwreck in the coastal water of Victoria. It is part of the John Chance Collection. The elongated bubbles in the glass are likely from the glass being blown into a mould. Glassblowers made bottles like this one by blowing into a long metal pipe or reed with a blob of molten glass at the end of it. The shape of the glass would be blown out to fit into the shape of the mould. Once it set, the glass was removed from the mould and the glassblower would continue using the pipe to create the neck and another tool to finish the base. The bottle would be cracked off the end of the glassblower’s pipe and a blob of molten glass would be added to the top to form the mouth and lip of the bottle. The seal was usually a cork, often held in place with tape. Although the bottle is not linked to a particular shipwreck, it is recognised as being historically significant as an example of bottles imported for use in Colonial Victoria in the mid-to-late 1800s. The bottle is also significant as it was recovered by John Chance, a diver in Victoria’s coastal water in the late 1960s to early 1970s. Items that come from several wrecks have since been donated to the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village’s museum collection by his family, illustrating this item’s level of historical value. Bottle, dark olive green glass, tall thin Gallon type. Mouth is applied roughly, lip is straight and narrow. Body has no visible seams; tapers gently inwards to base. Concave base is deep and has a pontil mark. No inscriptions.
