Colour photograph of a fundraising wine bottle label promoting the centenary of the Menzies Creek State School. Label is off-white with red printing. 'GORDO RIESLING/An unusual blend/ of Gordo and Riesling grapes specially/ prepared, giving a Moselle style taste/with a pleasant Dry Riesling finish, and ready/to be enjoyed now./The grapes were grown and vintaged at/ Angove's Renmark vineyards.' The label features the (then) school logo, designed to mark the school's centenary, with artwork by Tanya Mayer and Konrad Matta. -

Photos 051/267 and 051/268 are 2 copies (one named) of a black and white photograph showing a Working Bee at the Menzies Creek Hall site. Photos 051/269 is a close up of the left side of the photo, showing Carol King, Grace Martin, Barbara Haig and Mrs Haig, along with Lyn Hermon (baby) and Jay Hermon (toddler). Photo 051/270 is a close-up of Rodney Haig, with Mr Martin in the background wearing a hat. Other men can be seen in the background. The photo shows the land being cleared in preparation for the building of the Mnezies Creek Hall in 1953. Tall trees are in the middle and background. The hall is situated on the south-east corner of Belgrave-Gembrook Road and School Road. -

SIGNALWOMEN An appreciation by an instructor (Sgt J.F. Larkins). Presented to Signalwoman Ruth Franklin after training in Melbourne 1942. After training, Ruth served on Rottnest Island as a communicator in the Plotting Room, Oliver Hill “Join the Corps of Signals”, the clarion call went forth, “Volunteer for the A.W.A.S. and let another man go north.” So you came into the Signals, in Australia’s hour of need, And let a thousand men go up the line, to meet the yellow breed. Where the lazy Yarra flows, through the green Victorian glade, They formed a school of Signals, to teach you in our trade, And the Old Ones, they were cynical, their tones were full of Jeers, “Women in the Signals! What rot!” But their moans have turned to cheers. You were tossed into the melting pot, that is an Australian Army camp. There weren’t many comforts, there were no electric lamps, There weren’t many blankets, it was cold in those tin huts, But the A.W.A.S. came up smiling; you had good Australian GUTS. The hours were long and wearisome, you were given lots of work, But we didn’t find a loafer, we knew not one to shirk. We made the pace a hard one, sometimes there were tears, But you lasses learned as much in months, as we men absorbed in years. You’re in the ARMY now; you all wear the Rising Sun, Sometimes you’ll be unhappy, but stick till the job is done. Time there will be, when the nerves are frayed, and all you do is bungle, Just feel the badge on your tunic, and remember your mates in the jungle. The Melbourne Legacy Diary/Contactor handbooks were produced annually by Melbourne Legacy. The books supply Legatees with many useful details and regulations. They include lists of current Legatees and contact details. A handbook is issued to all Legatees to assist them with their work with the legacy widows; eg childrens' education, welfare, accommodation, health. A quick easy guide to services provided by Melbourne Legacy such as bursaries, medical care, financial assistance etc for Legatees use. It was reissued annually for many years prior to keeping this information electronically. Many issues are held at 00305. Chapters of the book might include the following (taken from the 1956 edition), many of which are Legacy committees: Administration Anzac Day Observance Comradeship. 'Comradeship is an integral and important part of Legacy. Provenence is unknown but contains potentially rare photos. A comprehensive record of the types of events provided for Junior Legatees in the 1940s. Events such as the Government House Christmas parties and Annual Demonstrations. Also a record of the classes offered to girls and boys. There are photos of Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for school students that has been held annually by Legacy in April. It helps educate and promote the observance of Anzac Day to students. Some of the photos are Junior Legatees that joined the armed forces in the second World War. Pages 7 and 8 show the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester to Legacy. They were in Australia to start his term as Governor General of Australia - until 1947. Correspondence between Aaron Beattie Esq from Beattie Physical Culture College Melbourne and E. Hilmer Smith Esq about Girls’ Physical Culture Classes in July 1928. It was intended to aid the Sydney Legacy Club establish classes for girls. Excerpts include the following information: "I would suggest that you form a special C/tee to handle the Physical Culture work. . . . I would suggest that special care be taken to see that none but fully-qualified and trained teachers handle the children - this is all important. . . . We charge every child 5/- per year, payable quarterly. We have been most fortunate here with the girls section. An old friend of mine - Mrs Gillies - is our Hon. Directress. She was - until her marriage - in charge of all Physical Culture training in the State Schools of Victoria, and is a wonderful woman. She takes complete charge, appoints her own staff and so on. We pay some of her assistants from £2.2.0 to £5.5.0 per term of 12 weeks. The class was formed in May last year with 42 girls - we now have 121, and they have left the boys far behind. Enclosed you will find a copy of our measurement chart, which is an important part - every child should be recorded before starting, and again at the end of the year. I am also sending you a copy of our Demonstration Programme. This show was given after the girls had been going for 10 months, and it was a wonderful success - all these things help to bring success, and children seem to want these things to keep them going. . . . We spend about £600 per year on our Children's Work and nearly all of that goes to the Physical Culture side." The correspondence is a good snapshot of the undertaking of Melbourne Legacy running girls' club at that point in time and that Melbourne Legacy was trying to help Sydney Legacy establish a similar program. The trays say "Rosemary, A gift from Legacy". 00602.2 the lady in blue holding a Rosemary tray is Gwen Gunn who was one of the organisers of the Rosemary trays for many years. Other names unknown. In The Answer in 1995 an articles says: "Operation Rosemary. Since 1982 Legacy ladies have volunteered to make rosemary sprigs for the Anzac Day marchers. At a later date they also made sprigs for the Schools Shrine Service. . . don't worry, there are ladies here to show you how to make them and it's a chance to hav a chat and cuppa whilst you work together. Any day day that you can spare . . . please ring Joan Miller." A note on yellow paper from 01046 explains the source of the rosemary. Yields information about the closure of the SEC operated Ballarat system - presented in an unorganised manner and without newspaper dates.Set of about 6 newspaper clippings glued to a sheet of lined paper. Cuttings from the Ballarat Courier, date from around 23 August 1971 following the closure of the Victoria St lines and part of the Gardens route. Includes a poem titled "Vale, the Tramways!", written by SMP, an item by a staff report going to to school by tram in Victoria St and Sturt St ""Will miss the tram". In 1884 Frank Ball erected a house and general store beside the Gellibrand River at Gellibrand. These buildings were burnt in the 1886 bushfires so Ball rebuilt a large weatherboard building with accomodation rooms for guests. In the same year he also acquired a Roadside Victuallers Licence. From the purchase of the hotel by Mark Marks in 1895 the hotel passed through the publicans' hands of Joe Marks (who replaced the original hotel with a grand masonry structure), Henry Wills, Ellen Pathe, another Marks licensee, Charles Sharp (adding a new accomodation wing and tennis court), Ray Stewart, Arthur McKenzie, Jim Fry from Beech Forest, and Colin and Noeline Sinclair. There have been several owners and licensees since then, the last co-owners being Dylan Kane and Michael Elton with the licensee being Annie Notley. Document - Mine Managers, a glimpse at a large subject. From Ballerstedt to Buerger
Mine managers had a variety of roles. They were a go-between for investors or shareholders and were responsible for the effective utilisation of human and physical resources above and underground. From the early 1870's the Bendigo school of mines held courses and exams leading to a Mine Manager's Certificate. These certificates were awarded in 3 classifications:- 1st class certificate holders could manage any mine where large and expensive machinery was used. They needed knowledge and competence in areas such as surveying, underground plan drawing, ventilation, amalgamation, retorting and smelting. They must also be literate and numerate. 2nd Class:- able to manage any mine where steam machinery was in use. 3rd Class:- for mines where there was no steam machinery . They needed to have a good knowledge of whim, whip or windlass work. Conversations continued through to the 1920's about whether the requirement for a Managers Certificate should be made compulsory under amendment to the Mines Act 1883. Amy Isobel Huxtable was born in 1919 and moved to Bendigo in her teens. She completed her education at Bendigo High School before attending the Bendigo Business College. She then worked as a copywriter for local radio station 3BO for 8 years. She then moved to Melbourne to work in advertising before travelling to England in 1950 to study the new medium of television, still not available in Australia. In 1953 she returned to Bendigo and became the Eats Social Editor of the Bendigo Advertiser. This role led to a permanent position as the Women's Social Editor and later the editor for all Women's Affairs. Initially she wrote under the pen-name "Toora" but later used her own name. She remained in this position until her death in 1980. Throughout her life she was heavily involved in the development of women's roles and their status in life. 1965 fire at the Bendigo Railway Station A dull explosion in the refreshment room about 1:30 p.m. touched off the blaze, which quickly spread and burnt out the station in less than an hour. Just before the explosion a train carrying more than 200 Melbourne-bound holiday makers pulled out of the station. Scores of railways employees in other parts of the station did not realise the refreshment room was on fire until a signal box attendant gave the alarm. Early estimates place damage at more than £100,000. Quick work by station staff saved many thousands of pounds worth of equipment before flames engulfed the building from end to end. At the height of the blaze, a Bendigo fire brigade Station Officer, Vin Lapsley, fell 18 feet – and miraculously landed on his feet – after being overcome by smoke while directing a hose from a ladder on to the roof. Mr. Lapsley was later treated for a broken bone in his right leg.Many images from by Arthur Pulfer copied to slides. Hampton High School School Hampton Hampton High School Work ...In 1977, artist Annette Meikle undertook a commission to illustrate a book recording stories of places and people in the Bayside area. It was published in 1978 as Sandringham Sketchbook, with text by Elizabeth Waters. The sketches were intended to record remaining examples of Bayside’s early architecture and environment, as well as reflect newer architectural changes. Document - Amy Huxtable Memorial Committee - Newspaper Articles and letters to the Bendigo Art Gallery, 1985 - 1988
Amy Huxtable was born at Cheltenham in 1918, to Robert Henry Huxtable and Violet A Dagg. Her father was an installer for an oil company and travelled the State. taking his family with him. She completed her education at the Bendigo High School and later attended the Bendigo Business College, becoming an expert shorthand writer. Her first position was as a copy writer with Radio 3BO, in the mid 1930s. She worked with an advertising agency in Melbourne and then with the Age,newspaper. In 1953, Miss Huxtable was appointed temporarily to succeed Miss E B Millane as social editress of the Bendigo Advertiser, during the latter's absence abroad. In 1956, Amy travelled abroad and on her return in 1957 was appointed permanently as Women's editor, a position she held for twenty-three ears. During her early years with The Advertiser she wrote under the name Toora, but in later years her own name became widely known. Miss Huxtable was well known both in her professional capacity and through a interest and involvement in community activites. She was life governor of the Bendigo Hospital, the Bendigo Home for the Aged, and Mirridong Home for the Blind, she was a member of Soroptimist International and the Business and Professional Women's Club. Amy was also a tireless worker for the spastic society and a strong supporter of the YWCA. When Amy Huxtable died at Mt AJvernia Hospital on 16 January 1980 Mayor Campbell ordered the city flag to be flown at half-mast. "Lowering the flag is the least we can do for such a lady" Cr Campbell said. Douglas Lockwood, editor of the Bendigo Advertiser said, "She was a devot d colleague who gave her craft and her newspaper the kind of service which identified a rare and generous spirit." She was a true professional who decided to make Bendigo her home. More than 300 people packed St Paul's Church for her funeral ervice the bell tolled as the casket was carried from the church. At a ceremony in the Conservatory Gardens on No ember 22 1981 The Amy Huxtable Memorial Committee presented to the City of Bendigo, a garden seat in memory of the late Miss Huxtable. This Bendigo manufactured seat was a fitting tribute to one ofBendigo's most loved and esteemed citizens. All Miss Huxtable's Advertiser articles were microfilmed and presented to the Library by the above committee.
