Anna Box 1849- 1919 was born in Withyham, Sussex England had her 7th birthday en route from Liverpool to Australia. George Box 1808-1867 of Sussex England, married Mary Cripps in 1831 and with 3 three of their 4 four sons and 3 three of their 4 four daughters left Liverpool in the Sailing Ship 'Atlanta' in March 1856 to begin a new life in Melbourne, Victoria , Australia. Their baby daughter Cecilia Lydia died a few days later. Caroline Box, the eldest daughter, remained in England working as a cook until she joined the family in Australia in 1863. William Box 1834-1902, the eldest son of George Box, married Elizabeth Avis 1833- 1914 and they resided in Box Cottage 1865 -1914 where they established a market garden and raised 13 children. William and Elizabeth had emigrated in 1854 so George worked on their market garden before setting up in Patterson Road. Sadly Mary drowned in a water hole only 4 months after their arrival in Brighton. It is supposed that Elizabeth helped George raise the children while he established his market garden. George died from Tetanus following an infected broken leg caused by falling from his dray in 1867. Anna was a dressmaker and in 1881 she married Henry Pay , a painter, from London and they had 3 children . In 1907 the family lived on a 30acre property in Ringwood which Anna bequeathed to her children. – Beatrice, Norman and Laura. In 1911 they moved to Surrey Hills where Anna died in 1919. Henry died in 1935 in Montrose where he was living with his son Norman Henry Pay, a farmer . Box Cottage Museum, a reconstruction of an early settler hut, is named after the Box family who resided there 1865 -1913 . William Box who, with his wife Elizabeth Avis Box and 13 children, lived and farmed on the block of land in Jasper Road, East Brighton ( now McKinnon / Ormond) that was part of the Henry Dendy Special Survey 1841. George Box 1808-1867 migrated in 1856 and worked with his son William Box until he established a market garden in Patterson Rd . East Brighton ( now Bentleigh). A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day. This was taken in 1982. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. It is a photo of two school children laying a wreath at the Cenotaph. They are named as two Junior Legatees, Peter Manning and either Bridget Riggs or Gayle Goulding (the two labels are contradictory). It is possible one of the labels belong to another photo (item 01200) as they were found in the same envelope and it appears to be the same boy in both photos. However both labels were attached to this photo. Item was in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different School Student ceremonies. Photos of Legacy Widows at a luncheon function after the Widows Sunday ceremony at the Shrine and a church. This is an annual event for Legacy widows at the start of Legacy Week, which is the first week in September. The venue is the Savoy Ballroom at the Grand Hyatt in Melbourne. These ladies are the same as those leaving St Michael's church (00527) which on the same film as the wreath laying service at the Shrine with Legacy President David Kelly (00525). Possibly 2000 based on that was the year David Kelly was President of Melbourne Legacy. Names unknown. A photo of the Tyne Cot Cemetery in Passchendale dated September 24, 1930. It appears to be a professional photograph purchased as a souvenir. See also 01024 Menin Gate, Ypres, as it is by the same manufacturer. The Tyne Cot Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery and Memorial to the Missing is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) burial ground for the dead of the First World War in the Ypres Salient on the Western Front (source Wikipedia). The hand written inscription on the back of the photo says: "This memorial in Cemetery was built over a German dugout. 12,000 men are buried here. Stone wall at back has soldiers names engraved on same. Those unknown - words in stone 'Australian Soldier of the Great War Known unto God.' Australians captured Passchendale from the Germans Oct 4th 1917. Beautiful cemetery, all well kept, gardens, lawns, flowers. Ypres, Belgium Sept 24/30" The source of these photos is not known but they were stored together in the archives. The founders of Legacy were returned servicemen from the first world war and may have returned to France in the 1930s. Manufactured by L. Kevin Coombs, OAM (born 30 May 1941) is an Australian wheelchair basketballer and athlete who competed at five Paralympics including the first Paralympic Games in 1960. He was the first Australian Aboriginal Paralympic competitor for Australia. Coombs was part of the Australia men's national wheelchair basketball team at the 1960 Rome, 1968 Tel Aviv, 1972 Heidelberg, 1980 Arnhem and 1984 New York/Stoke Mandeville Paralympics. He served as coach/captain at the 1972 games and as captain at the 1984 games. He also participated in athletics events at the 1968 and 1972 Paralympics. A class photo of a group of young legatees at a gymnastics class in Auburn. There are 31 boys, of various ages, in gymnastics gear and 5 men who could be the instructors and Legacy members. Legacy clubs ran classes for junior legatees for many years. It was part of providing for the children of their deceased comrades. The skills they learned were show cased in an annual demonstration usually at the Melbourne Town Hall. It appears to be photo taken professionally, as there are several photos of different classes (see 00862 - 00867) perhaps to record Legacy classes for promotion purposes. During World War II the Japanese attacked New Britain soon after the outbreak of hostilities in the Pacific Ocean. During January 1942, Japanese heavily bombed Rabaul. School history - ref https://ourholyredeemer.cam.org.au/history In 1904 Fr. George Robinson erected a weatherboard school-hall where the present hall now stands. It was blessed and opened by Archbishop Carr on 20th November of that year. In January 1905, the Sisters of St Joseph took charge of the school. Archbishop Mannix opened and blessed the new brick school on 10th November 1918. From 1941-1972, Fr Tim Fitzpatrick was parish priest and head of the school. He is the priest on the LHS of this large school photo. Personal history: Although they lived in Prospect Street, Box Hill, John and Mary Turnbull attended Our Holy Redeemer School, as did Susan Hirst who lived across the road from the Turnbull family with her parents Ray and Shirley Hirst at 29 Prospect Street.Part of a large landscape black and white photo of a priest with a large group of children grouped as follows: Back row: 20 boys Second back row: 21 girls Second row: 16 girls Front row: 10 boys. Photos show men in chefs hats and people sitting under picnic umbrellas. In 1975 the Bulletin mentions a BBQ for legatees at Stanhope, it may have been an annual event. The Comradeship committee, including Fred Holdsworth gathered photos of events and compiled them in a Comradeship photo album for Legatees to look through.
