'Mungo Moon' by Don Barrett is the first sculpture erected on the Churchill Art and Culture Pathway. It was officially unveiled by Professor David Battersby on 15 April 2015 From Churchill & District News 16 October 2014 The Churchill Art and Culture Walking Pathway will have its official public opening on Saturday October 18, with a walk finishing at Federation University Australia’s Switchback Gallery at the Federation University Gippsland Campus. ... An important link on the newly developed pathway was recently completed with a path south of the FedUni Student West Residences. The path now allows walkers to turn off the Eel Hole Creek path before reaching Glendonald Estate and to follow a picturesque, tree lined walkway to join up with the footpath on the Eastern side of Northways Road. From there the footpath joins into Federation University’s network of walking paths that proceeds past the Switchback Art Gallery, down through the pine plantation and along Lake Kretlow and the Churchill Golf Course. Project Manager Mike Answerth, said the opening of the West Residences section of the path means there is now only one short link to complete. “We’re now very close to realising the project’s objective to join up all these walking paths to provide a continuous pathway that encompasses town, campus and parkland. The next stage of the project will be the completion of Latrobe City’s East West Link and the enhancement of the walking path with artistic and cultural features.” said Mr. Answerth. Head of Federation University Australia Gippsland Campus, Dr Harry Ballis, said the project had been made possible through the contributions of the five former Gippsland Education Precinct (GEP) partners. “The Art and Culture Pathway represents another important step in joining the Churchill township and the university campus as a physical and social entity,” Dr Ballis said. “This was an initiative of the GEP and it is pleasing to see it coming to fruition.” The path now reaches as far as the golf driving range but plans are already under way to connect with the Mathison Park board walk and pathway, which surrounds Lake Hyland in Churchill. This letter outfit (RNIB catalogue no. 9096) is primarily intended for teaching blind and partially sighted children the rudiments of spelling and word building.There are 60 letter squares in the set, and on each of these appears a printed letter, both capitals and lower case, the capital being at the top with the braille equivalent in the middle of the tile. The H. & L. Hecht Trust was established in 1970 to provide support for community development projects. One such project was the establishment of a Low Vision Aids Clinic at Kooyong, so that people with low vision had access to the devices and equipment that could assist them. The tablet reads: The establishment of this Low Vision Aids Clinic was made possible through the generosity of the trustees of the H. and L. Hecht Trust. Miss Enez Domec-Carre was the teacher of the girls classes at Legacy. This article was based on the Eulogy given by Legatee Ted Larkin at her funeral on 21st April 1998. She was a former Miss Victoria and was known for her physical education skills and for introducing grace and culture to Melbourne. In 1932 she joined Melbourne Legacy and in 1934 became the chief instructor of girls' physical education until she retired aged 65. In the post World War II baby boom the Legacy evening classes were attended by about 400 girls. She helped organise Legacy Widows and Legatee wives to sew the costumes for performances. Among her proudest moments was a display by 1000 Junior Legatees at the MCG during the 1954 visit of Queen Elizabeth II. As well her work for Legacy she ran physical education, ballroom dancing and debutante preparation classes in Windsor, Elsternwick, Gardenvale and Geelong. She also held a position on the Board of Studies and as director of physical education in Catholic Schools. Recognition of her work included being awarded an MBE in 1971. A letter to the President of Melbourne Legacy from a representative of a sub-committee. The pencil mark on top of first page could imply it came from Legatee Stan Savige. Date is not known, the first section refers to a resolution of the Board of Management in 1930. That resolution was 'That members of the Club make every effort to influence trade towards Returned Soldiers in business, particularly fellow members, and accept every opportunity at this juncture to carry this into effect.' The rest of the report is a discussion on the impact of this resolution and how it can be made effective in the working of the Legacy spirit. In the report on the work of Legacy in 1953 (see item 01491) it was mentioned that the education of Legatees was seen as something that needed to be addressed and a formal induction process with proper training would be necessary. A two page report was included as attachment 'C'. This is the report. It mentions the Board of Management decided to inaugurate a course of classes, over six Monday evenings. The topics covered: 1) The structure of Legacy and the nature of contact work. 2) Welfare Committee and Welfare assistance available from statutory sources. 3) Education and Employment Committee 4) Residences, Housing and Accommodation, Camp and Holidays Committees. 5) The Medical, Dental, Boys' and Girls' Group Committees. 6) Personnel and Comradeship. These two letters, one to President Owen from James G Gillespie with a donation of a copy of 'Legacy' by Claude Blatchford, and a yellow file copy of a reply letter from President Owen. Legatee Gillespie suggests document called 'Legacy' by Blatchford should be inscribed and handed to succeeding presidents. The reply agrees and that the Board had expressed their appreciation of the fine gesture. A document that was part of a folder about the running of the President's Fund, that was created in 1932 "to help temporarily embarrassed Melbourne Legatees" towards the end of The Great Depression. The aim of the fund was the give the President a way to help needy cases with discretion and without having to gain approval from committees. In many cases the money was repaid by the recipient. The document summarises the history of a fund that allowed President's to make discretionary payments to worthy causes without need to have it approved. It mentions that original and official papers about the fund have been lost so this was an attempt to record what was known. The fund was credited to the late Legatee Walter Berry of the domestic and building supplies firm, Henry Berry and Co. wth money from his late father's estate. An initial fund of £200 (?) was handed to the president with some of the following terms: 1) the funds existence was not to be published or made known, except from President to President 2) money could be loaned or granted in sums as determined by the President of the day, for the preservation of the independence of the recipient 3) The club treasurer must keep the money in a separate account 4) The only persons to be helped must be members of Legacy but no restriction on the reason (business or personal) 5) At the end of the presidential term records handed over may be 'closed' except the ones that loans were involved and the terms of the loans could be disclosed. It is known annual donations of up to £1,000 to Legacy were received from the Howard and Georgina Berry Trust for use in the Fund. See also item 01520 for another summary of the fund's history. Other pages show copies of the original letter, dated 24 February 1933, acknowledging receipt of £50 from the Howard and Georgina Berry Trust Fund to start the President's Fund with agreed terms of use. He was also instrumental in gaining the support of both General Sir John Monash and the R.S.L. to build the Shrine of Remembrance, as well as ensuring media backing and thus public support for the project. He worked tirelessly for Legacy for 38 years until he retired at the age of 84, and entered fully into comradeship activities throughout his involvement. Despite initially losing his farm and then a colour printing business he went on to form W.D. Joynt & Co which began by printing advertising and moved on to general printing, ultimately becoming one of the three largest paperback printers in Australia. in 1976, due to the then economic difficulties in Australia, the company went into receivership, but managed to trade its way out and eventually printed most of Mills & Boon's popular romance series. In 1981 the company became part of the McPherson Group of Companies and Joynt retired. His qualities of leadership, persistence and business acumen were of great benefit to Melbourne Legacy. Confidential report dated 11th November 1970 by Forecasting Sub-Committee chaired by A.V. Dore. Itemises occupancy from 1961-71, annual cost of the residences, auxiliary accommodation costs and Legacy manpower needed, as well as the philosophy behind providing residential care. Consideration is given to the need for accommodation, equivalent care available elsewhere, and the projected decline in the number of children needing accommodation. The Forecasting Sub-Committee recommended that a further sub-committee be appointed by the Board to enquire further along the lines suggested in this report, and this became the Residences Review Sub-Committee in 1971. Legatee Doolan was a very active Legatee, starting within the first year of Legacy when he was nominated by Bill Laver and Charles Copp in 1924. While he never sought 'office but he was always there - in the background - able and willing to actively serve'. In World War 1 he enlisted in November 1917 and served with 1st Division Signal Company and in France. After Armistice he attended a course for young AIF surveyors at the British Ordnance Headquarters at South Hampton. Famously it was Frank that proposed that the spirit of Legacy is service to the widows and children. "Here it received its soul. The thoughts transmitted to the Board by this quiet man." He was part of the Legacy team who worked enthusiastically for the establishment of the Shrine. It was his technical skill as a surveyor that enabled the ray of light to shine on the Stone of Remembrance at 11 am on 11th November. Also to solve the complication of daylight saving by positioning two mirrors . For this he was awarded the British Empire Medal. He was involved in the purchase of Legacy House in 1955 and also in the Lone Pine project in 1964. Speakers included President Bill Braidie, Legatee Jim Gillespie and Legatee Frank Doolan. Frank recalls how he delivered the Toast to Legacy at the Perth Conference. In it he likened Legacy to a valuable cloak with foundations of gold and silver laid down by the founders, and additional threads added by successive legatees to become what the public see today. This notebook appears to be the Warrnambool Water Trust Records of two contracts in 1892 . (The reference is written as 'W.W.Trust'.) The first contract, with the contractors, Coates and Reed, is for the excavation for settling tanks and clear water basin and a reservoir in Liebig Street and there are 60 pages giving details of these works - labour, masonry, concreting, fencing etc. The second contract with the contractor, William Kellas, is for the erection of a cottage and an engine shed and boiler room (7 pages). The Warrnambool Water Trust was set up in 1891 and the first project was the supply of water from the Merri River near Wollaston to a reservoir and tower in Liebig Street and this notebook concerns some details of this early water supply scheme. This notebook is of some interest as it supplies details of a late 19th century Warrnambool water supply scheme and so should be of value to local history researchers This is a notebook with a red leather cover and pages with printed headings and ruled red lines. The pages contain handwriting in black ink.
