In 1960, at public events commemorating the Centenary of Kew, the Mayoress, Mrs Doris Dickinson wore an evening dress, elbow-length white kid gloves and a scrolled silver necklace studded with cubic Zirconias. The Historical Society now hold all three items in its collection. The dress and gloves were donated by Judith Goodes, and this necklace by Janet Webster, twin daughters of Doris and William (Bill) Dickinson. Janet Webster recounts that she had purchased the necklace at a store in Collins Street and loaned it to her mother to wear at these civic events. An item of costume jewellery that derives its significance from its provenance and the context in which it was worn by a mayoress of KewNecklace, with ten cubic zirconias mounted on scrolled silver links. The French Collection was donated to the Society in 2022. This collection includes documents, artworks, books, costumes and artefacts belonging to two families. A number belonged to, or were made by the grandparents of the donor: Vida May Wing and her husband Hubert Charles McDonald. [Other items belonging to Vida and Hubert are in the collections of the Australian Performing Arts Museum and Museum Victoria.] A second significant group of objects were gifts made to the donor's family by Lucy (Jean) Hornby of Queen Street, Kew whose family had been early settlers in the district. Vida May Wing was born in Richmond in 1882. A noted teacher of plain, fancy and step dancing, during the first two decades of the twentieth century she held annual fancy dancing and floral balls, where her pupils were the performers. In 1916, she married Hubert Charles McDonald. She died in 1959.Round box of Guerlaine [established 1828] face powder. The name of the manufacturer is embossed on the base. The original owner of the evening bag was Elizabeth (Betty) McGregor. The bag was a gift from her husband, Ian McGregor (Managing Director of Ingersoll Rand), during a trip to Europe. The bag was purchased in Burlington Arcade, London in 1955. An accompanying photograph shows Betty, in attendance at a Captain's cocktail party with the evening bag on her arm. Betty was the best friend of the my mother, and not having children of their own, Betty and Ian were very good to my sister and I. Betty gifted the bag to me in 1983. As a Kew resident, it gives me much pleasure to pass on this evening bag to the Fashion & Design collection of the Kew Historical Society. Joseph Butterworth COOMBS (1842-1901), was an accountant who founded a successful mercantile trading company. At the time of his marriage to Caroline Mary MICHEL in 1869, Coombs had already purchased ten acres of Studley Park. The acreage included land on the west of Fenwick Street that extended along lower Stawell Street to the corner of Yarra Street, all of it connected directly to the Yarra environs. A right of way to Studley Park Road was on the title, though Coombs went on to purchase more land, some of which faced Studley Park Road. In addition to owning the Studley Park acreage, Coombs later acquired 1,201 acres of land abutting the Acheron River. While retaining the Kew property he became a Taggerty Councillor and was Shire President for a time. J.B. Coombs died at Acheron Station in 1901 (aged 59 years). A few months after, tenders were called to repair the Kew dwelling, the Fenwick Street property now appearing in records with the name ‘Hope Mansell’. Caroline Coombs remained at Hope Mansell until she died in 1924, survived by three sons and five daughters. Not long after her death, advertisements appeared for the sale of the Studley Park land. The sale seems to have been a mechanism for distribution of the Estate, as the following year the original ten acre holding was transferred to members of the family. The eldest daughter Mabel married William Younger who, with his brother Alexander, developed Younger and Mackie Courts, both south of Studley Park Road. [Research: Kerry Fairbank]In 1961, the granddaughter of Joseph and Caroline Coombs, Mabel Isola (Younger) Grattan, donated ten 19th century dresses and parasols to the Kew Historical Society. The costumes, now known as the 'Coombs Collection', are the earliest recorded items of clothing to enter the Society's collection. Each of the items in the Coombs Collection, of which this item forms a part, is historically, aesthetically and socially significant. As a collection, the costumes includes outstanding examples of morning wear, day dresses, wedding dresses, and clothing accessories, providing evidence of outstanding dressmaker skills in Victoria during the mid to late Victorian period. Single-piece, floor length, gold silk taffeta evening dress featuring the use of a very long fishtail train to which is attached a silk cord to allow the wearer to hold it above the floor. The dress includes a number of decorative features including the extensive use of box pleats on the sleeves and on the hem of the skirt; contrasting gold and cream braiding and tassles; and the extensive use of ruching on the bodice at the front. Due to the age and fine quality of the silk taffeta used, there is evidence of the degradation of the fabric on one shoulder and a tear in the rear of the skirt. The box also states that there was a retail outlet at Glenferrie Station. Inscribed on the box is the name Mr Edward Smith, 16 Macartney Avenue, Kew. The collection of thirteen model horse drawn vehicles were carefully handmade by Mr Chas W Davis 1925 - 2002. He was a talented artist and saw doctor. These models are of single horse drawn military gun carriages and accessories.Three gun carriages: 1. A brown four wheeled wooden model of a gun carriage for military use with a white horse. The carriage wheels have black rims with grey painted spokes. There is a brown storage box at the front for the driver with a brown vinyl padded seat.Three wooden slats form the footrest. A gun cleaning rod and lighter rod are attached to the back of the narrow support tray towards the back wheels. The saddled horse is linked to the carriage by a wooden shaft. A gun carriage is a frame and mount that supports the gun barrel of an artillery piece allowing it to be maneuvered and fired. These platforms often had wheels so that the artillery pieces could be moved more easily. 2. A brown large two wheeled gun carriage with no horse. The wheels have grey painted spokes and black rims. There is a cleaning rod and a lighting rod attached to the carriage shaft near the wheels. Presumed worn by Mrs C.V Schooling as noted written on the piece of paper underneath the burgundy mount inside the case.A ladies watch with a purple patterned enamel surround, a white face and black roman numerals surrounded by tiny gold dots around the edge of the face. It has a metal grooved winder on the right of the face which moves the hands but the watch doesn't keep time. The wristband is brown leather with a Reg. No on the back and has a gold coloured buckle. Is is in its original lidded case - CYMA brand, although the brand is not written on the watch itself. The case has a purple label on the top lid with an illustration of a black and gold watch with gold roman numerals behind it. CYMA - on time all the time is written below. Inside the lid is the brand and a statement about the guarantee. It sits on a burgundy velvet mount. Underneath the mount is a handwritten message from the wearer stating that the watch doesn't keep time. On the bottom of the box is writing in grey pencil with many words indecipherable. Historical information Sarah Coventry Pty. Ltd. was a North American jewellery company that was established in 1949 by the Stuart family as part of Emmons Jewelry, Inc. It began operations in England and Australia in 1968, and in Australia it moved from Carlton in Melbourne to Wodonga in 1969. The premises were originally on High St. in Wodonga, but a new warehouse was built in Melbourne Rd. later in 1969. It was a direct selling jewellery business using a party-plan model similar to Tupperware and Avon. The sales reps or 'Hostesses' were provided with jewellery samples in demonstration kits, which they displayed at jewellery parties in their homes. The designs for jewellery such as brooches, necklaces, earrings, chokers and bracelets were purchased from freelance designers and jewellery manufacturers rather than in-house designers. In 1979 Sarah Coventry Pty. Ltd. in Wodonga was bought by three Australian businessmen, including Wodonga local Jim Sawyer, and continued to sell jewellery under the name "Sargem Pty. Ltd”, for several more years in the 1980s. The "Aristocrat" line was first released in Canada in 1969 for several years. It was distributed from the outlet at Sarah Coventry Park, Wodonga.As part of the Sarah Coventry collection, the tie pin has local significance with the decentralised commercial development of regional centres such as Wodonga in NE Victoria, as well as national and international significance from the perspective of social and economic developments for women after World War II. The direct selling party-plan business model Sarah Coventry was based on is also considered the first of its kind for jewellery.A small square tie pin of silvertone plated metal with an ice blue rhinestone in the centre.
