This uniform was worn by Lieutenant Colonel J Allard who commanded 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles 1959-1962. Col Allard had served in the pre-WW2 militia, then in 2/4th Armoured Regiment (AIF). Following the war he joined the CMF and served as 2i/c 4/19 PWLH prior to taking command of 8/13 VMR. He maintained close contact with the Regimental Association and following his death in October 2018 at age 98 his family donated this uniform to the museum. The uniform was known as 'mess undress' but served as formal winter dress until 'mess dress' was made available in 1970s. A letter dated 14 March 1940 to Legatee Stan Savige advising him that he had permission to visit Hobart Legacy while he was in Australia during the second World War. It is signed by General Thomas Blamey. The reason for the trip to Hobart was to present the Legacy Charter to the Remembrance Club to become Hobart Legacy. It was held at Hadley's Hotel in Hobart. Savige was serving in the Second World War and had to obtain special permission to travel to Hobart to fulfil this task. A menu card from the dinner is also in the archive. Legatee Savige presented the Legacy Charter which was then accepted by the President of the Remembrance Club. A group of items including an identification tag on a leather wrist strap, flask and boot hook. Also a circular ID tag possibly made to be worn around the neck. Also a Ypres souvenir that seems incomplete. These were with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. Possibly these were with him during his time in the First World War and he kept them as a mementos. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving in Portsea in 1920. The banner and frame were carried by representatives of the 38th Battalion during parades..1) Rectangular red cloth banner with gold coloured fringing sewn to the bottom edge. Red cloth loops are sewn onto each side and the top to facilitate attachment to the metal frame - see .2). Printed on both sides in gold, black and white - '38 Battalion AIF'. The '38' is printed on a replica of the 38th Battalion colour patch. .2) Rectangular frame in khaki coloured tubular metal. Each corner is clamped and secured with bolts and wing nuts to allow for the frame to be dismantled.
