This coloured postcard with a photograph of the Exhibition Building in the centre with crossed hands above & the flags of Australia & the United States on either side was a souvenir of the visit of the Great White Fleet in 1908. There is also a representation of the Statue of Liberty on the left & the Australian Coat of Arms on the right. To raise funds for the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind, these badges were sold by street sellers in Melbourne. The Union commenced as the Australian Tramway Employees Association in 1910. Changed its name in 1934 to the "Aust Tramway & Motor Omnibus Employees Association" so as to incorporate bus drivers of motor omnibuses. Union members were issued with badges to indicate their membership. They were permitted to be worn on their uniforms. See item 5943 for another example. The decorative assembly from the top of the wedding cake of Archibald Burke and Eleanor McKew of St Arnaud, married in 1902. Typical of the period, the elaborate construction of floral and symbolic objects with partial shield originally carrying Australian Coat of Arms and Advance Australia. Much of the wax and icing items have disintegrated over the years but some such as the clasped hands, shoe, rising sun and paper floral motifs remain.
