The two RASvy units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash softball, tennis, touch football, tug-of-war and volleyball. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and snooker. The stereoscopes shown in photos .1P and .2P were used to stereoscopically view and interpret features in overlapping aerial photographs. The stereoscopic plotters shown in photos .3P and .4P were used to stereoscopically plot topographic detail from overlapping aerial photographs using a pantograph arm with pencil onto a controlled plotting sheet. The Ryker Model PL-3 Wernstedt-Mahan type stereoscopic plotter shown in photos .5P and .6P was used for precision contouring, planimetry and profiling. It was a comparatively simple stereoscopic mapping instrument designed to use ordinary contact prints of aerial photographs. It provides for plotting on a constant scale and approximate tilt correction but does not provide refinements such as correction for lens distortion. The plotter in Photo .6P does not have its pantograph arm attached. These five photographs of map production and the car park area were taken at Fortuna, Bendigo, c1980s. The first three photographs were taken in Air Survey Squadron, where aerotriangulation and digital photogrammetric extraction of topographic features from aerial photography were undertaken. Photo .4P was taken in Cartographic Squadron’s Correcting Section, located in the Attic. The technicians were probably involved in a rapid response map production, as they all were wearing field uniforms. The Army Survey Regiment’s Duty Room, RAP and Carpark appear in Photo .5P. It was probably taken from the top steps near the SGT’s accommodation block in 1986. This set of 10 photographs of the Army Survey Regiment’s victorious rifle shooting team was taken outside the Tavern at Fortuna, Bendigo in c1979. The rifle shooting competition was the ‘Irwin Trophy for Shooting’, a contest with the British Army’s 42nd Engineer Regiment, the equivalent military geographic mapping unit at the time to the Army Survey Regiment. The bent .303 rifle seen in photo .3P was retrieved from the bottom of Fortuna’s lake when it was drained for restoration. This is a set of four photograph of Camera Section, Lithographic Squadron, one of the Army Survey Regiment’s four squadrons, at Fortuna, Bendigo in 1976, 1978 and 1979. The main tasks undertaken by Camera Section’s technicians were photographic enlargements, reductions and duplication of map reproduction material, and processing of aerial photography. Photo .2P and its enlargement (.3P) was taken with Camera Section in front of the Klimsch Commodore camera on the 5th of October 1978, before its decommissioning. This is a set of 29 black & white photographs of troops from the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment undertaking ceremonial drill at the military funeral for SSGT Peter Dew on the 28th of September 1977. The location of the funeral service was at Fortuna, Bendigo. He was buried at Bendigo Cemetery in Quarry Hill. Peter Dew died in a tragic accident at home. He was fondly remembered as one of Lithographic Squadron’s colourful personalities. See item 6243.7P for photos of Peter Dew at work in Lithographic Squadron. The "Super Animal of the Year" Peter Dew Memorial Award was an award presented to a member of the squadron for a crude act. In this set BRIG P. Davies AM, ADC was taken on a tour through the orthophoto production area. In photos .1P to .3P and .6P BRIG P. Davies AM, ADC presented a productivity award to CO LTCOL John Winzar in Fortuna’s Ballroom. LTCOL Winzar was the CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1987 to 1989. The WILD OR1 orthophoto projector and workstation featuring in photos .7P to.10P and .12P to .14P was introduced in the mid-1980s. It was the second-generation equipment used to orthorectify colour and monochrome film aerial photography, replacing the system introduced in 1973. This is a set of seven photographs of map grid production using co-ordinatorgraphs at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna Bendigo. c1960s to 1970s. The Aristo Co-ordinatorgraph introduced in 1962 was a large heavy steel framed light table with a scribing head that moved in a XY direction using a vernier calibrated measuring scale to 0.001 of an inch. Whilst hand operated it was much quicker and accurate than manual grid and graticule calculation, plotting and scribing. Mapping PNG presented the Regiment with many challenges. WO1 Farrington and CPL John Dean developed computer software for the digitally controlled co-ordinatorgraph, the Calcomp 718 Flatbed Plotter. Much time was saved by automatically plotted cartographic grids and graticules, and automatically draw base compilation sheets complete with aerial triangulated stereo model control. This could be used for a number of maps and was the first step towards map automation. SGT Bill Boyd appearing in photo .1P reach the rank of WO1 and for 11 years was the technical warrant officer at the Detachment Army Survey Regiment located at Bonegilla, Victoria. He was awarded the OAM, the Order of Australia Medal for the development of the Flexiflow quality control system. This system comprised a series of job plans and charts linked to a task allocation to resource magnetic planning board. Using critical path analysis and task prioritisation, complex job planning was efficiently scheduled, and re-prioritisations readily made. Reproduction requirements were effectively coordinated by way of weekly courier to the Army Survey Regiment. Supervisors and technicians fully embraced the system as they could understand their role, others around them and the positive production achievements. Bendigo.
