In 1937, Lucknow Manufacturing Company was fined for selling methylated spirit which was adulterated (The Age, 19 August, p. 4.) Lined up in the foreground along the side of the Dummy are approx 20 tram crew and other staff, most in assorted uniforms with unbuttoned jackets. While the photo's reproduction is poor, the destination board reads 'H. B. Railway' (Hobson's Bay Railway) once located at the Flinders and Elizabeth Streets terminus. Born in 1883, Herb was the eldest of David and Martha’s 8 children. He moved to Greensborough with the family at age 17. He was a good sportsman, playing cricket and excelling at wood chopping winning many ribbons at shows. He moved to Brunswick after his marriage in 1917 where he worked as a carter.
