Functional object - Floorboards, 1994
Two short sections of flooring cut for distribution during Deakin Universities ‘Open Day’ in December 1994. This was during the conversion of Dalgety Wool Store to Deakin University’s Woolstore Campus. These small pieces of timber are part of Geelong’s history and were salvaged from the Dalgety Woolstores during the renovations. Hundred of meters of ironbark, red gum, pine and other timbers, some more than a century old, were reclaimed from the site and have been recycled as furniture and featured building materials for the woolstore campus. The old brick stores, located on a formerly neglected section of the Corio Bay shoreline, now house the administration and chancellery, architecture and building schools, information technology services, the student union, a cafeteria and, as the focal facility, a Great Hall seating 1500 people and acoustically tuned for symphony orchestras. The refit was developed from the existing grid of substantial timber columns and beams extending over 52,000 square metres. This framework was filled with lightweight panels to enclose workplaces and removed in some parts to establish courtyards, atriums and streets. The brick facades were redefined with new doors and double-glazed windows in proportion to original fenestration. Bright colours and industrial finishes identify the new insertions.Square sections of redgum lumber cut into floorboards. The sides of the lumber have a grove cut on one side and a matching section to fit within this groove on the other side. This has been done to ensure the floorboards have a tight and consistent fit with one another. The bottom of the lumber also has an additional grove running through the middle of the redgum. On top, one of the sections of lumber has three nail holes, which travel all the way through to the bottom of the wood.deakin university, dalgety wool store, red gum -

Caption reads: "This is the Rutherglen police station, which was described as a 'disgrace' at Rutherglen Shire Council's meeting last Friday. Walls of the tiny station are riddled with white ants and the two lock-ups at the rear are primitive. The station is said to be more than 80 years old and entirely out of character with its surroundings -- the pleasant civic square. The condition of the buildings will be brought to the attention of the Victorian Police Commissioner and Public Works Department." The two lock-ups mentioned are now (2018) property of the Rutherglen Historical Society, and are located at the back of the Museum awaiting renovations to make them into a display.Black and white photocopy, that seems to have been from a newspaper article, showing a photograph of a small cottage that served as a police station in Rutherglen for some years. The town of Vire is on a rocky promontory above the Vire River, situated in the south-west of the Calvados department of Lower Normandy, about half way between Caen (north-east of Vire) and Mont-Saint-Michel (to the south-west). Since 2016 the town has been part of the commune called Vire-Normandie. The town suffered quite heavily during bombardments at the end of the Second World War, and much reconstruction and renovation took place in the decade that followed the end of the war. The restaurant was sold again c1975 and became a Reception Centre. This information was provided by Victor Grotaers who was the resident solo-accordionist in 1968 when the new Tatra Hut opened. Photograph, Braco Park, c1913
Braco Park Guest House was owned by the aunts of Sir Keith Murdoch, Eliza and Grace. It became a Red Cross convalescent Home for nurses in 1918.It was sold to Mrs. Techow and renamed "Clovelly" in 1920. It had been the Murdoch sisters' guest house, Braco Park, that originally introduced Prime Minister Billy Hughes to the hills. Walter Murdoch's nephew Keith Murdoch, a young parliamentary reporter for the Age, took Hughes and several other politicians up there before the war. Keith's father had been a friend of the previous PM, Andrew Fisher. Keith Murdoch was sent to London as a reporter in 1915, and developed an influential relationship with Hughes who bought a small farm in Sassafras, and ran some of the business of government there during the war and after. Acquired by The Education Department about 1985, the Sherbrooke Community School was built, with the Clovelly house being stripped back to its frame and renovated to form the main building of the school. An existing cottage on the site is also used. B & W postcard showing the front view of Braco Park with another small building to the RHS. Newly planted garden in the front. The Rose Series P. 106.
