Captain John Marshall was born in Dundee, Scotland c.1833. Within eleven years of his arrival in Melbourne in 1852, he had established an important colonial shipping company, Anderson & Marshall, and married Mary Austin, the eldest daughter of Thomas Austin Esq of Clifton Villa in Cotham Road. Elected to the Kew Borough Council in 1869, he remained an active member until 1875. During this period, he was elected Mayor of Kew in 1872. A Scottish Protestant by birth and conviction, John Marshall was, with David Beath, a member of the inaugural committee that began planning for a separate Presbyterian Church in Kew, lending the Committee the funds to purchase land on the corner of Cotham Road and Highbury Grove. John Marshall lived at his home, 'Maryfield', at what was then 239 [now 197] Cotham Road until shortly before his death at the age of 70 in January 1903. He was buried on 14 January in Grave 493, Presbyterian Compartment A, Boroondara General Cemetery.Family portrait of the relatives of an important civic figure in Kew in the 19th century who was also a notable businessman and shipowner in the Colony of Victoria.Albumen silver photograph on card of the Marshall family grouped in three rows in a garden setting. The Bank was replaced by a more modern looking building during the 1970's. In the background is the ES&A bank on the corner. Jane Nigro advised 9/9/2020: "1907 Photo of the E. S. & A. Bank on the corner of High Street and Glenferrie Road, Malvern. In 1885 land on corner of Glenferrie Road & High St. (40' x 150') was purchased by E.S. & A. Bank. A condition of sale was that the bank erect on the land a 'substantial brick building to be used as a branch bank', within 24 months. The E.S. & A. Bank, single-storey four roomed brick, was built in 1888. The first manager was Frederick Leonard. The Estate is well wooded with Gum, Cherry Tree and Stringy Bark, with Wattle in the valleys of the several creeks. Development in the 20th century has irreparably altered that part of Kew represented in this plan. In the block bounded by Cotham Road, Charles Street, Wellington Street and Gellibrand; just one house standing in 1903 remains. This block included two of the most historic houses in Kew: ‘Ordsall’ (later ‘Southesk’) and ‘Madford’ (previously ‘Elm Lodge’). Ordsall was the home of the second chairman of Kew, John Halfey. It contained some of the most significant interior murals in Kew, created for Halfey by artists working for Cullen & Co. It was demolished in 1960 to make way for the Kew Civic Centre. Elm Lodge had been built for William Siddeley in ca. 1864. Arthur Septimus King purchased it in 1874. The lower paddocks of Madford were sold in 1905 by his wife to the Borough of Kew and, after landscaping by George and Thomas Pockett, opened as the Alexandra Gardens in 1908. Chief among these was ‘Park Hill’ on an enormous lot facing Park Hill Road. The Jubilee History of 1910 noted, six years after this plan was drawn, that: ‘Park Hill Road, forming the southern boundary of the cemetery, takes its name from Park Hill, the residence of Mr. Thomas Judd, who has resided there since December, 1852.’ Other named houses on the plan include ‘Ferndale’ facing Cotham Road; ‘Ermington’ adjacent to Judd’s Park Hill, facing Park Hill Road; and ‘Gilden’ and ‘Mont Belmont’ facing Belmont Avenue. Mont Belmont was designed by the architectural firm of Reed, Henderson and Smart for William George Lilley in 1887 and was completed in 1888. The laborious task of hand-tinting these Board of Works plans was not without hazards as is evidenced by Plan No. 1593. On the Plan, the original colourist spilt black and green ink, partially obscuring some parts. The most obvious casualty is ‘Clifton’ located on the corner of Cotham Road and Park Street [now Adeney Avenue]. Included in this Plan, and outlined in pink is that part of the section that the contracting engineer was tasked with completing. This included sewering on both sides of this part of Cotham Road, but excluded properties such as ‘Glendonald’ and ‘Monnington’. This area was to undergo a series of subdivisions including the ‘Clifton Estate’, which created housing lots on Adeney Avenue and Florence Avenue in 1916. Arthur Henry Dear was an employee of the City of Kew, acting as Hall Keeper of the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, and later the new Kew City Hall in Cotham Road. The Arthur Dear Collection contains memorabilia - tickets, programmes, invitations - as well as his identification badge. Items in the collection dates from the 1940s to the 1960s. The Kew Recreation Hall (Wellington Street) and later the Kew City Hall (Cotham Road) were major locations in suburban Melbourne in the postwar period for civic and private events including theatre productions and exhibitions. The Arthur Dear Collection (in conjunction with the scrapbooks compiled by Marion Tilley) provide a comprehensive snapshot of performing arts in Kew during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The numerous subdivision plans in the Kew Historical Society's collection represent working documents, ranging from the initial sketches made in planning a subdivision to printed plans on which auctioneers or agents listed the prices for which individual lots were sold. In a number of cases, the reverse of a subdivision plan in the collection includes a photograph of a house that was also for sale by the agent. Subdivision plans are historically important documents used as evidence of the growth of suburbs in Australia. They frequently provide information about when the land was sold on which a built structure was subsequently constructed as well as evidence relating to surveyors and real estate and financial agents. These photographs provide significant heritage information relating house design and decoration, fencing and household gardens.When 29 Uvadale Grove, Kew was offered for sale it was described as: ‘Kew. Fine locality, 3 minutes Cotham Road. Splendidly built 6 roomed Brick Villa. Rooms 17 x 14, 16 x 13, &c. Beautifully fitted throughout. Land 70 x 134 to ROW.’ The price was advertised as being £1,400. The house exhibits key features of Federation architecture such as the gabled roof with a facing of half-timber and stucco. The veranda has a curved corrugated iron roof supported by timber pillars and fretwork. These photographs provide significant heritage information relating house design and decoration, fencing and household gardens.A photograph of Mount Eri, 9 Highbury Grove, an 11-room house for sale near the junction of Cotham and Glenferrie Roads. The substantial red brick, slate-roofed house and its location are not identified in the photograph, although the extent of the house is noted. It was described then as ‘well situated’ and close to 3 trams. Mathers, a financial agent in Cotham Road, placed advertisements about the sale of the property in The Argus in May and June 1919. The advertisement additionally refers to a billiard room and asserts that the house has every modern convenience. An annotation on the plan indicates that the house, with tennis court, was sold for £1960. Following extensive research, the house has now been conclusively identified, albeit extended and rendered. The house was originally built in the 19th century as a school and for much of the 20th century was used as a venue for receptions.
