These original columns are marble, made in 113AD. They come from Rome, Italy and are held in the Cast Courts at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. The collection of casts at the museum is one of the most important in the world. Their original purpose was educational when it was not easy to trail and see original works. they thus provided an opportunity for students to study. The Cast Courts opened in 1873 and allowed the display of large monuments. These galleries are currently divided by nationality. Displayed in the Architectural Courts from the time of their opening in 1873, it provided the opportunity for students (and others not able to travel to Rome) to see this iconic monument of the classical world. The cast of the column is made up of sections of plaster reliefs that are attached to an inner chimney built of brick. The Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme (KHES) produced electricity for the people living in the Kiewa Valley and beyond to many parts of Victoria. The people and their families working on the scheme were encouraged by their employer the State Electricity Commission of Victoria to purchase and use electrical appliances. The iron was popular as it was quick and easy compared to those used previously. This iron belonged to Ron White who was a senior member of staff during the construction and operation of the KHES.This iron was owned by Ron White who was appointed Area Operations Engineer Kiewa in June 1956. Nicholas Caire was born on Guernsey in the Channel Islands in 1837. He arrived in Adelaide with his parents in about 1860. In 1867, following photographic journeys in Gippsland, he opened a studio in Adelaide. From 1870 to 1876 he lived and worked in Talbot in Central Victoria. In 1876 he purchased T. F. Chuck's studios in the Royal Arcade Melbourne. In 1885, following the introduction of dry plate photography, he began a series of landscape series, which were commercially successful. As a photographer, he travelled extensively through Victoria, photographing places few of his contemporaries had previously seen. He died in 1918. Singer was first established as I. M. Singer & Co. in 1851 by Isaac Merritt Singer with New York lawyer Edward C. Clark. Best known for its sewing machines, it was renamed Singer Manufacturing Company in 1865, then the Singer Company in 1963. The Singer company began to market its machines internationally in 1855 and won first prize at the Paris world's fair that year. They had offices established in both Sydney and Melbourne by the mid-1960s. The company demonstrated the first workable electric sewing machine in 1910. Singer was also a marketing innovator and a pioneer in promoting the use of instalment payment plans, making their machines more affordable for many people. According to its serial number, this machine was manufactured in 1950 and was one of the new models designed to be more portable as it only weighed about 10 KG.This sewing machine is of local, national and international significance as it represents developments in technology and the impact this had upon the work of women.The Singer 99 was a sturdy and reliable machine that was easy to use. Lighter than other machines of its time, this machine weighed only 10 Kgs. It is mounted on a wooden base with a small compartment under the balance wheel to store accessories and bobbins. It has a 'Bentwood' (polished plywood) cover which also provided some room for storage. The machine is driven by a small electric motor and a light to illuminate the work area. It is decorated with gold decals and a filigree pattern. It includes a knee control which is inserted in a hole at the front of the machine. It was built in the 1950’s as a seminary for the Blessed Sacrament Fathers. Because of the poor and circuitous road access, a suspension footbridge was built across the river. This object is used to wind yarn ,typically wool from a skein or hank into a ball from which it can be worked into the required garment. The skein is placed around the four pegs on the ends of each arm and wound from this into a ball. The movable arm facilitate easier winding of the yarn. It is thought that this may have come from Fletcher Jones factory where it was probably used more to rewind cotton onto reels. Either use is possible.This item or those similar would have been a well used tool in many households before the time of woollen yarn being purchased in balls. As such it has social and historical significance as well as being useful as an item to create discussion.Square wooden base with bevelled edge and central post from which is screwed two wooden strips of wood. A shorter piece of wood is riveted to each end of these two pieces and these have dowel running upright from each end. The top section is movable and can be extended or contracted as required. Many Richmond residents claim to have supplemented the family fruit and vegetable supply in early years by pilferring from the Orchard. Occasionally a professional job was done by backing a truck up to the fence using bags to cover the boxthorn for easy entry and loading of the truck (E.B. A mortise axe is a specialist axe designed for hewing sills and notches in joints. The axe has a long, narrow head, making it easier to work on large logs. The shape enables the user to hew a long way down into the notch, where otherwise a chisel would be used. This tool has one blade, which may be pushed, swung or struck with a mallet. Top has a wider end which is circular with 2 opposite sides, including the handle end, shorter. This circular end has an elevated base with 9 holes in the middle of each square made by a 'noughts and crosses' pattern - used for easy drainage. Beside the circular end is a small oval cup end which has a straight side in the middle beside the circular end and a curve on the outside end. Sandhurst and Electric Tramways Company introduced the first trams to Bendigo in June 1890. These were battery operated trams but it soon became obvious that the battery life was unable to copy with Bendigo's hilly terrain. The trams were converted to steam in 1892. In 1899 the tramways were sold to the Electric Supply Company of Victoria and in 1903 the trams were converted to electricity. After WW1 the SEC was formed and took over the running of the trams. With the increased usage of cars, patronage of the trams began to drop off after WW2. In 1972 the tramways closed as a commuter service. Object belonged to and was used by Dr Lennard Travers 1950-1970.Complete Macintosh laryngoscope piece with a curved medium sized attached blade with light bulb and a textured handle with serrated grip for easy of use and a screw in the blade connector. The handle is also a battery deposit to supply the led light bulb. The blade has general deep scratches on its surface and a slight metal deformation on top back of the blade. At the back of the blade is still attached the hinge that keeps in regular position the base and the blade, is also present a worn surface in this area. Green spots of dust and oxidation processes are present over the blade and the handle areas. This camera is a folding one, the Ensignette No 2 model made by the British firm of Houghtons Ltd which was originally a glass warehouse founded in 1834. The firm of George Houghton and Sons, dating from the late 19th century, established their camera business at Ensign House in London in 1903 and the Ensignette No 2, designed by a Swedish engineer, was introduced in 1912. Eastman Kodak of America produced a film for this model. This camera was a popular one with amateur photographers and the general public, being affordable, compact and easy to use. This camera is retained as an example of a British-made folding camera dating from nearly 100 years ago. It will be useful for display..1 This is a black metal camera which is rectangular in shape. It is a strut folding rollfilm camera with a lens that is folded inside in a thin leather concertina or bellows covering. It has the maker’s name and logo etched into the front of the camera. The logo is a flag with the British Union Jack in one corner and the word ‘Ensign’ inside the flag. The metal on the back of the camera is rusted. .2 This is a brown leather cover for the folding camera described above. It has a top lid flap which closes with a metal stud and a leather handle stitched on to the sides of the case. The cover is much worn and scuffed. These wooden butter pats were used to shape butter into bricks; making butter ready for sale and use. The excess moisture would be squeezed out of the butter; which was then transferred to a wooden board. The butter maker would hold one of these pats in each hand and work the butter into shape. These wooden pats are thin; light and easy to hold. The inside face is serrated to grip the butter and squeeze out any further water. It was also used to make patterns on the finished butter. This item was produced for commercial shops and other traders in a period, 1800 to the 1950s. They were used because they were extremely cost effective, speedy, easy to learn and simple to use. It was also at a time before pocket calculators and electric cash tills were produced. The reckoners were a fast and accurate accounting book for a ever increasing bulk purchasing industry. These reckoners were at the start of a business principle "time is money" The reckoner was also looked upon as a way of reducing staff errors in the calculation field. This reckoner was highly valued to a rural industry in the Kiewa Valley because of the bulk produce being bought and sold here. Produce such as milk, tobacco, cattle, timber and fruits relied on weights and quantities calculation for cost pricing. Electrical machines were not of use in "the field or paddock" where important price negotiations took place. For a successful business to keep going accuracy was upper most to producers. It was still a time where honest transactions built reputations and tardiness ruined them. It was a time when a producer's word was his bond and a gentleman's handshake was as good as a contract. This attitude lasted a lot longer in rural regions than in the city. A producer's reputation was based on face to face negotiations and honesty.This hard cover book (blue in colour) contains 210 pages of black numbers and headings on light yellow pages (aged).
