Captain John Hepburn (7 page document re Hepburn by unknown author titled '' From Sea to Squatting - Smeaton Hill. Unknown date). Born Whitekirk Haddington East Lothean Scotland, 10 December 1803. His mother nee Stewart. Worked for East India Shipping Line. In 1828 at 25 years became the mate on the vessel 'Diaden'. Captain Wilson. As Captain of the 'Alice' in 1830 married Eliza Combes. Alice Elizabeth, 1st child, born the same Year. 1833 a son John Stewart was born and unfortunately died one year later. A third child Thomas was born. He sailed on a steam propelled vessel between Sydney and Newcastle. He later took over the ship 'Ceres' and was expected to run the Board of Directors. Sadly health prevailed. The 'Ceres' struck 'Whale Rock' and sank. Captain Martin was in charge at the time. Mr. J. Gardiner offered and overland to Victoria. Other names are; Mrs Coghill, John Coghill,. Dr Guscetti was born in Quinto, Switzerland on 24 June 1816. He died on 24 April 1871. Mary Hepbuirn (or Hepburn) married Henry Francis in 1857, and they had nine children. In the 1870s they acquired land south-west of Linton, where they lived and farmed for many years. The Smeaton Presbyterian Church was built in 1859 of locally made brick, and opened in 1860. The building committee was . Messrs. John Hepburn, W. McAlpine, W. Anderson, S. Moore, W. H. Clarke and W. Miller. It cost an estimated 1,200 pounds, and was assisted by Captain John Hepburn who donated 5 acres of land and 150 pounds for the church. The rest was contributed by the settlers and their employees. Around 1890, the outside brickwork was given a coat of cement, which has improved with age. Robin Boyd developed a close friendship with the founder of the Bauhaus in Weimar Germany, Walter Gropius, who had moved to the USA in the 1930s. Through this connection, Boyd was invited to be the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Bemis Professor at the School in the North American academic year 1956-7. Robin and Patricia Boyd, with their youngest daughter Suzy, were based in Cambridge, Massachusetts for the year. Boyd gave some lectures at MIT and he was also invited to give lectures at many other universities, allowing him to travel widely within the USA, especially on the East Coast. This gave him the opportunity to meet architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero Saarinen, Paul Rudolph and many others, and visit the offices of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, and places like Taliesin and the General Motors Technical Center Detroit.
