The Bendigo Horticultural and Agricultural Show began in 1859 when a meeting was held at the Shamrock hotel to form a committee. William Eagle was a pioneer orchardist in Harcourt, who brought a dray load of apple seedlings to Harcourt from Watmough’s orchard, Greensborough in 1857 to launch the industry for which Harcourt has become famous. By 1872 his orchard, in Reservoir Road, Harcourt, was fully in bearing.A reminder that Harcourt orchards came into prominence within 15 years of establishment and Harcourt Apples have taken a pre-eminent position in the State’s horticulture industry ever since. Two newspaper articles, re the fight to save tree near Ringwood Timber on Maroondah Highway, late 1950s. The Yellow Box tree was located west of Ringwood timber, outside Bill Patterson's Motors near the New Street intersection. The fight was led by Cr Ben Hubbard, the secretary of the Ringwood Horticultural Society, Mr Kearsley, but was eventually lost. The articles are from The Herald and dated December 1957 and 11th June 1959.

In 1791 Prague organized the first World's Fair, Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic). The first industrial exhibition was on the occasion of the coronation of Leopold II as a king of Bohemia, which took place in Clementinum, and celebrated the considerable sophistication of manufacturing methods in the Czech lands during that time period. The French tradition of national exhibitions culminated with the French Industrial Exposition of 1844 held in Paris. This fair was followed by other national exhibitions in Europe. In 1851, under the title "Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations", the World Expo was held in The Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London, the United Kingdom. The Great Exhibition, as it is often called, was an idea of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's husband, and is usually considered to be the first international exhibition of manufactured products. It influenced the development of several aspects of society, including art-and-design education, international trade and relations, and tourism. Robert Uriah Nicholls was born in Devonshire, England, and arrived in Victoria in 1853, and Ballarat in 1854.] He ran R.U. Nicholls &​ Co., nurserymen in Doveton Street North, Ballarat. He was a member of the Ballarat Horticultural Society for 51 years, and was President of the Old Colonists' Association in 1907. Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. These included the Horticultural Society, the Wodonga Arts Council, the Wodonga Camera Club and the Wodonga Lapidary Club.
