Sydney Joy (joy) Stewart (1925-2018) was a founding member of the Kew Historical Society, and during the 1970s its secretary. During her residence in Kew, she completed numerous property illustrations on commission. In the mid 1980s the names of all government schools were changed. The title for schools from Prep to Grade 6 changed from state school to primary school and former high schools, with a few exceptions, became known as secondary colleges. Frances Emerson was born in Elsterwick in 1906 to Thomas James Emerson, a furniture manufacturer, and his wife Selina Sarah (nee Bowen). She had 3 siblings - Thomas George (1908-1977), Melvie Eleanor (1910-1965) and Hulett Moore (1915-1999). They lived at 18 Kent Road, known as 'Sunnybrae' and later as ‘Willacool’. Her mother died at 'Sunnybrae' a few months after the birth of her youngest brother. After attending state school, Frances went to Fintona. She trained as a kindergarten teacher at ‘Mooroolbeek’ Kindergarten Training College in Kew and taught during the 1930s. Her 1st appointment was at the Robert Cochrane Kindergarten in Auburn. She also worked at the City Free Kindergarten on the corner of Exhibition and Little Lonsdale Streets, where children came from very poor dwellings in ‘lanes off lanes’. Her sister Clara Thurston Dacomb b 15 Oct 1867 Portland, Victoria; died 19 Oct 1946 aged 79 years at her residence, 120 South Street, Sth Yarra. Their mother Eliza died aged 47 years in 1875; parents = Thomas Evans and Frances Thurston. Their father Edmund Dacomb was a merchant; both parents born in England. They were the 6th and 8th children in the family. Other siblings: Geoffrey (b1860; died Box Hill 1936 aged 76 years), Walter Alfred (b 1857; died Qld 20 Jul 1936), Annie Frances (b. 1862; died Lilydale 1901 aged 39 years), Lydia Harrt (b. 1855; died Balwyn 1925 ged 70 years), Leonard (b. 1866; died 1872 aged 6 years), Emily Maud (b. 1869; died 1874 aged 5 years). Its simplicity made it particularly useful in South America, Tonga and other Pacific Island countries. Their book 'Web speed-quick shorthand' was published in 1922. Their method lost currency after 1975 when a simplified form of Pitman was adopted by high schools and colleges of advanced education. This velvet opera cape was worn by Agnes Emmeline "Dot" McCowan (nee Iredell, 1887-1969) to a reception for English aviatrix Amy Johnson in her North Road home in the early 1930s. Amy Johnson achieved worldwide fame in 1930 when she became the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia. Dot was the fourth child, and only surviving daughter, of Dr Charles Lesingham Maynard Iredell and Frances Keziah Iredell (née Hill), both formerly of Regents Park, London. Her parents had arrived in Australia in 1885 after Charles, a medical specialist, lost his money and house in the financial crash of 1880. In Melbourne, Charles established a reputation as an ear, nose and throat specialist and counted Dame Nellie Melba among his patients. Dot was schooled at Fairlight College in St Kilda. After falling from a tree at the age of twelve, she developed curvature of the spine. While recuperating, she took a correspondence course in theory and harmony of music with the Royal College of Music, London. She continued to pursue music after her recovery, ultimately winning an international scholarship to study piano and singing in Leipzig, Germany, but did not take up the offer due to her father's objections. She instead remained in Melbourne, where she put her skills to use as a music teacher. After her first fiancé disappeared at sea, Dot found happiness again with George Drummond. George owned a substantial property in Manjimup, Western Australia, and the couple planned to settle there after the wedding. It was not to be. Like many Australian men, George was killed in action on the Western Front during the First World War. It had become customary in George's wealthy family to give each son's bride a gift of one thousand pounds. Though Dot and George were never able to marry, the family nevertheless honoured the custom, and between their generous financial gift and her own teaching income, Dot was able to buy a well-appointed home at 9 North Road, Brighton for herself and her parents. The house remained in the family for many decades. In 1923, at the age of thirty-six, Dot met and fell in love with Alexander James McCowan. Laurence SCOTT PENDLEBURY (1914 - 1986) Born Melbourne Laurence Scott Pendlebury studied at the National Gallery of Victoria School between 1932 and 1938 and then at Swinburne Technical College. He served during World War Two with the AIF between 1941 and 1945. Teaching at Swinburne Technical College between 1946 and 1963 Laurence Scott Pendlebury was head of the art school from 1963 until his retirement in 1974. He was president of the Victorian Artists’ Society from 1961 to 1963. Awards include: Dunlop Prize in 1950, 1951, 1953 and 1954; Gibson Prize, Victorian Artists’ Society in 1956; Wynne Prize in 1956, 1957, 1960 (shared with John Perceval) and 1968; Caltex Prize in 1957; Victorian Artists’ Society Artist of the Year (shared) in 1975. Nornie Gude was the daughter of Walter Gude, a leding musician, and highly regarded teacher. She grew up in Ballarat and was educated at Loreto College. From 1931 to 1936 Nornie Gude attended the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. She was accepted into the School at the age of 15 because she was so advanced in painting. Nornie Gude studied at Ballarat for five years before progressing to Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria School. As a violinist Nornie Gude played for more than a decade with the Zelman Orchestra. Bruce ANDERSON (20 August 1950- Born Surry Hills, Melbourne, Victoria In 1971 Bruce Anderson obtained a Diploma of Art (Sculpture) from the Prahran Institute of Technology. For the next two years, he worked at Raynham Ceramics in East Bentleigh, making slipcast ware. After a year of National Service, he completed a teacher education course at the State College of Victoria, Auburn and taught for a time in the secondary school system. In 1977, he moved to Queensland to take up a position as Head of the Ceramics Department at Townsville TAFE. In 1984, he relocated to the Darling Downs Institute in Toowoomba and was still teaching there in his entry in the 1986-7 directory, working in raku and blackware fired with gas in a ceramic fibre kiln. During 1986, he moved to Adelaide to take up a position as senior lecturer in ceramics at the South Australian School of Design. During the late 1980s and 1990s, he began to make sculptural works of architactural form cast from a mixture of terracotta clay and refractory concrete. Part-glazed, the works allude to primitive industry and utilitarianism. This painting is one of my key early works incorporating the Baroque dualities of theatrical drama and inner emotional worlds. Interpreting the Baroque subject of the Sacred and the Profane, the swirling diagonal composition of crossed figures, transparent and billowing drapery in contrasting colours and dramatically tense gestures, in this work combine to suggest both religious ecstacy and physical sensuality. The glade is portrayed as white light. It is the open space for the drama. One face gazes ambiguously at the viewer, questioning, whether she is - the willing but (guarded OR mysterious?) seductress the title suggests. Julie Watkins, 2015 Julie WATKINS (1949- ) In 1969 Julie Watkins completed an Associateship Diploma Fine Art-Painting at RMIT, and a Fellowship Diploma of Fine Art-Painting the year after. In 1973 she was awarded a Diploma of Education at Hawthorn State College. Julie Watkins worked as a TAFE teacher from1973 to 1978, then as a tutor for the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at RMIT between 1979 and 1992. Inge KING (26 November 1915 – 23 April 2016) Born Berlin, Germany Arrived Australia 1951 Inge King trained as a wood carver and studied at the Berlin Academy (1937-1939), Royal Academy London (1940), and the Glascow School of Art (1941-1843) . She moved to London in 1847 and began carving organic abstract forms in wood and stone. In 1949-50 she went on a study tour to the United States of America where she was inspired to work in metal . Inge King arrived in Australia in 1951 and she completed several large scale public works. Between 1861 and 1875 Inge King lectured at the Institute of Early Childhood Development, Kew. From 1976 to 1987 she lectured in Sculpture at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. She was a founding member of the Ceminal Centre Five group, and she actively lobbied architects, governments and State galleries to include modernist sculptures in their plans and displays. In 1991 Inge King joined the first National Trust of Australia (Victoria) Public Art Committee, advising on public art at risk and worthy of Trust classification. The Australian Women's Art Register describes Inge King as having been at the forefront of developing a non figurative vocabulary in Australian Sculpture. Ray WOOLARD (1951-03/2024) Born Ballarat, Victoria Ray Woolard studied at the Ballarat Junior Technical School (c1967); Diploma of Art (Sculpture) at the Ballarat School of Mines/Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education from 1969-1972; a Secondary Art and Craft course at the Ballarat Teachers College c1973; and then the Victorian College of the Arts (Melbourne) 1974-75. He was studying at Ballarat Teachers' College when he completed 'Moose in High Healed Sneakers'. It became a greatly loved artwork on the Gillies Street Campus, and was moved the Mount Helen Campus in 1976 when the Ballarat Teachers' College became part of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. As an artist Ray Woolard worked within the fields of painting, carpentry and sculpture. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Nornie GUDE (1915-2002) Eleanor Constance (Nornie) Gude was the daughter of Walter Gude, a leading musician, and highly regarded teacher. She grew up in Ballarat and was educated at Loreto College. From 1931 to 1936 Nornie Gude attended the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. She was accepted into the School at the age of 15 because she was so advanced in painting. Nornie Gude studied at Ballarat for five years before progressing to Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria School. In 1936 Nornie Gude was studying at the Ballarat Technical Art School, and the National Gallery Drawing School in Melbourne. She won many art competitions, including first prize at the 1936 Melbourne Royal Agricultural Show for still life drawing, and in 1941 became the first woman to win the National Gallery Students Travelling Scholarship. In the 1936 Ballarat School of Mines Annual Report it was stated: "It is my pleasure to report a most successful year in the Technical Art School. I the Annual Poster Competition for Technical Schools, organised by Wiltshires Pty Limited, 16 prized valued at 33 pounds 8 shillings - out of 23 prizes valued at 56 pounds - were won by our students. As an artist Nornie Gude held no theories and was once heard to say, “You spend your first 20 years learning technique and the next 20 years losing it”. Gareth SAMSOM (19 November 1939- ) Born Melbourne Sansom describes a desire to constantly surprise and challenge himself as an artist. He had his first exhibition in 1959. His paintings of the 1960s were characterised by a distorted use of line, shape and colour and were influenced by abstract expressionism, Francis Bacon and Sidney Nolan. Over time, his work has also drawn on punk, dada, Basquiat, T.S. Eliot, urban graffiti, classical Greek philosophy and art theory across a variety of media ranging from drawing, printmaking and collage to photomontage and photography. Sansom lectured in Art at the Ballarat Teachers' college, and was appointed Head of Painting at the Victorian College of the Arts from 1977-1985, and Dean School of Art at the Victorian College of the Arts from 1986-1991. He was artist-in-residence at the University of Melbourne in 1985, which was when he resumed his full-time painting practice with a series of large works on canvas. The Federation University Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.'Looking for God in Abstract Art 2' is a play on the debate over the respective virtues of abstraction and figuration that has preoccupied artists and critics for more than a century. Sanson has always walked a wobbly line between the two, adroitly avoiding falling headlong into either camp. It is also a gentle dig at the pretensions to higher spiritual meaning in abstract art. In the centre are two photographs, one of rubber masks and the other of the artist in a lurid fright wig and mask and using a spray can like a young tagger. These images, where the artist wears a mask and teeters on bright red platforms, are wonderfully ludicrous send-ups of the 'fine art' of painting.
