This file contains one item about the Caulfield RSL’s newsletter: 1/Five issues (nos. 26, 33, 35, 42, and 44) of Furfs, the official newsletter of the Caulfield RSL, dated 12/2000, 05/2004, 10/2005, 12/2007, and 11/2009 respectively. The issues vary in size (numbering 12, 6, 1, 8, and 8 pages, respectively) and consequently, in terms of breadth of content. Most, however, report on the Club’s recent activities, list the current administrative staff, eulogise recently deceased members, and contain advertisements for goods and services of interest to members. All except the shortest also contain numerous black-and-white photographs of members participating in various events. Vision AustraliaPainting - Artwork, Portrait of Diana Jones, 1992
Framed portrait of Diana J. Jones who the first female president of the Association for the Blind since Tilly Aston. It is part of a series of paintings commissioned by the AFB Board to commemorate the work of past presidents of the organisation. Mrs Jones sits facing the painter with both hands clasped in her lap. She is wearing a black double breasted blazer, white shirt, blue beaded necklace and earrings and a gold bracelet . A white kerchief sits in her breast pocket. Diana Jones served for 8 years on the General Committee before being elected President. During this time she was deputy chairman of the Reach Out Appeal to raise funds for the building program and President of the Honorary Services Group which co-ordinated volunteers and gave them a spokesperson on the General Committee. In her 8 years as President a great deal was accomplished. New centres were opened or extended throughout Victoria and the Metropolitan area, volunteer services expanded and the Vision Resource Centre at Kooyong was built into which 3RPH radio was relocated. A Vision Information hotline, audiology services and the National Centre for Ageing and Sensory Loss were established, the Braille and Talking Book libraries was incorporated into the Association and the Charlie Bradley Cricket Pavilion opened at Kooyong. In 1990 Diana Jones became a member of the first Board of Directors of the newly incorporated Association for the Blind Ltd which ushered in a new era, requiring strict observance of financial and accounting methods in order to ensure continued Government funding. Mrs Jones was highly regarded by clients, volunteers and staff as a capable hard-working leader. Her services to the Association and over many years to the wider community, were recognised in her appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia in the 1993 Queen's Birthday Honours. When Mrs Julia Ronan nee Arundel lost her husband John to tuberculosis in 1906, she quickly decided to move from their small farm into Wodonga with her 3 children. She was granted the lease of the ground she needed to establish her eating house at one shilling per year in a shed on the Dalgety's saleyard block. Two established merchants Albert Schlink and John Whan and butcher Jack Garrett agreed to allow her credit which enabled her to open Ronan's Dining Rooms at the Saleyards. It was often a challenging environment, with drovers, and horse- breakers, auctioneers and bushmen bringing huge mobs of cattle and horses to the saleyards. Stories of the premises include the unexpected arrival in the passage of a lively bullock which finished up on the girls' bed. Mrs Ronan persevered and beat all obstacles to finally move from the saleyards to the Wodonga Coffee Palace in High Street, beside the railway gates in 1921. The construction of the Hume Weir had begun and some construction workers boarded at the Coffee Palace. Her 3 children achieved success due to their mother’s hard work to ensure their futures. Bill trained for the priesthood and was a parish priest, but died from tuberculosis 1n 1939 aged of 41. Katie became a highly accomplished music teacher, including 32 years at Albury Public School. In the 1930s she was able to buy a house at 49 High Street, Wodonga where she lived with her mother and sister Mary. Mary trained in office work at Edmondson’s solicitors and then worked on the Albury Council. After living with her daughters in the High Street house, Julia passed away on her 90th birthday in 1958. Mary died on 6 January 1983. Katie passed away in Wodonga at the age of 97 on the 16 September 1996. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. Identified by Mrs Surman as the Linton football team in about 1900. Mrs Surman also identified names of players, which are inscribed on the back of the photograph. Guernseys were apparently hand-knitted at this time, mostly by the players' mothers. They were all in team colours, blue and white, but had different patterns. Snippets of Bendigo history - Edith Lunn continues her stroll along a Pall Mall of earlier years - On the Williamson Street corner, across from the Shamrock Hotel, once stood the Bank of Australasia, later the ANZ bank, next to the bank was the millinery shop of a Miss Goldsworthy, then we have Myers. D.Whyte's Teapot Grocery Store followed, conducted by Mr Alex Hamilton. J. H. Abbott's boot and shoe business, a Mr Curnow was in charge of the shop. Next a Mr George Doussaites kept a fruit and vegetable shop and Sutton's the music people had their first business premises there. Upstairs were Mr. Rueben Smalley's Dental Surgery and Mrs Gordon dressmaking establishment, all this businesses were later absorbed into the Pall mall Myer store. On one corner of the Arcade was Angelo's sweet shop and café. On the opposite side of the Arcade was White's, the jewellers. In 1974, fire destroyed the famous Arcade. Victoria Lane is named for the hotel of that name which was adjacent to the Mining and Stock Exchange. The Colonial Bank had established in 1857 on the northern side of what became Victoria Lane.
