The Picturesque Atlas of Australasia was released in 42 supplements between 1886 and 1889 and attracted over 50,000 subscribers. Produced by the Picturesque Atlas Publishing Company in Wynyard Square, Sydney. The company was established in 1885. Edited by Andrew Garran. Light tan coloured covers have a printed central rectangular double border. The title and publication information and illustrations are printed inside the border. Information in the "Linton - Sussex Street East Side (Title Searches)" file shows that Mrs Violet Annie Shepherd bought the property next to the garage in 1939.Black and white photograph which shows Bennett Bros service station (a brick building), next to Shepherd's "greengrocer and confectionery" store (a weatherboard building), in Sussex Street, Linton. The Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club was formed in September 1977 when a group of enthusiasts met to discuss the idea. The club, located in Mount Beauty has conducted many activities and programs for its members and other cross country skiers at the Falls Creek Ski Resort, Alpine National Park and the Bogong High Plains. Club objectives are to promote the development of cross country racing, ski touring and associated activities. To assist in searches for persons lost in bushland areas and to maintain a Search and Rescue group. It also provides its members with opportunities for skiing and social activities. The Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club constructed a clubhouse at Falls Creek for the use of members in 1996. The club has conducted the annual Kangaroo Hoppet since 1991. Since its inception, the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club has been active in promoting cross country skiing including racing and touring in the Falls Creek, Alpine National Park and the Bogong High Plains areas and have actively participated in search and rescue in the alpine region. Birkebeiner members have represented Australia at five Olympic Games. War Savings Cards were a popularist and accessible means of encouraging the ordinary citizens and children to contribute to the war effort by buying stamps to adhere to cards such as this. The stamps were valued at 6d and were of a blue and white image of a WW2 Spitfire plane. In addition there were war savings certificates, a type of promissory note, which were sold to hundreds of thousands of Australians during World War I and World War II.A beige card (unfolded and unused) printed in navy blue. The front is illustrated with the Australian coat-of-arms, space for the owner's personal details, information about the collection of war saving stamps, and the words "Sixpence a day keeps invaders away". On the back is "Don't be an onlooker - be in the fight". There are 32 spaces in which to adhere a war savings stamp and 3 illustrations - a plane in battle, search lights and a soldier in profile wearing a tin hat. During the 17th century, or the Golden Age, the Dutch Republic was involved in a number of wars at sea. The main goal of the Dutch navy was to protect shipping lanes all over the world and, if need be, to repel a naval invasion of Dutch territory. They also constantly searched for new territories from which to import the spices vital for the preservation of food. The Dutch are historically very proud of their seafaring history and honour "heroes" such as Dik Tromp, Piet Hein and Michel de Ruyter. These men were actually as much pirates as anything else and preyed on the treasures brought back from South America by the Spanish and Portuguese.This is actually a miniature sailing ship based on a small wooden clog. A Trove search records a fatal mining accident that occurred in Eaglehawk on 27th January 1895 concerning 23 year old William Schofield who was the support of a widowed mother and it can be assumed this is the son of the Mrs. Schofield mentioned in the letter. 28 Jan 1895 - FATAL MINING ACCIDENT. - Trove (nla.gov.au) The Age Newspaper p.6The item is a condolence letter behind glass in a timber frame. The letter is addressed to Mrs. Schofield from members of the Young Men's Bible Class at the Eaglehawk Wesleyan Sabbath School. The letter is handwritten in a copperplate style and surrounded by a black and white floral watercolour painting by the artist C.G. Darvatt. The frame consists of a gold painted inner timber frame with a decorative outer wooden frame.
