The ribbon is a souvenir of the first 'Australia Day', held 30 July 1915. This was not the celebration of nationhood as we know it today, but a national fundraising effort during World War I. Across Australia, this day was set aside for fundraising to assist wounded soldiers returning to Australia during WWI. In Linton Australia Day 1915 was celebrated with a jumble sale, raffles, and the collection of donations. There was also a stall outside the Shire Offices, attended by a group of girls dressed as Red Cross nurses, which sold flowers, postcards, toys and souvenirs. Mrs Surman, then Stella Todd, was one of this group of girls, along with her sister Millie Todd. (See photograph, Registration no. 055.) This is a souvenir which would have been mass-produced for tourists with the wording on the boomerang added to suit each different town or place. This type of souvenir was popular in Australia in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. This item came from a Hamilton antique shop.This item is of some minor interest as it demonstrates what tourists were buying in the 1940s. These three souvenir handkerchiefs were brought back to Australia after World War Two by James Godfrey. Flight Lieutenant James John Godfrey enlisted in World War Two in the Australian Air Force from Bessiebelle in western Victoria. He was attached to the British 8th Army under General Montgomery in North Africa and then took part in the landing in Sicily and the subsequent campaign through Italy. Before returning to Australia he travelled to Israel and Austria. These handkerchiefs are retained, firstly as examples of souvenirs brought back to Australia from returning military personnel after World War Two and secondly as souvenirs belonging to James Godfrey who had connections with the Warrnambool district. .1 This is a small pink silk handkerchief with a fluted edge and with some embroidery in one corner with flowers and wording in green, yellow and orange. .2 This is a small aqua-coloured silk handkerchief with a stitched edge and some stitched wording in one corner. The first Echuca Steam Rally was held in 1963 and grew in popularity over the following decades, especially after the arrival of the paddlesteamers Adelaide and Pevensey. This souvenir gazette may have been a new idea being published in 1976, which says 'Volume 1. No. 1', and consists of an editorial by Jack Prentice, Steam Rally Director, thanking people for their support, as the Rally had by then grown from a small fundraising event to a major event attracting people from 'all over the Commonwealth'. The Rally (and Rotary Park) allowed facilities and demonstrations for enthusiasts to restore and maintain irreplaceable machinery from the past. This item is from the private collection of George Shirling of Red Onion, Falls Creek. It is a souvenir from the First Alpine Art Show held at Koki Lodge in June 1967. The Art Show exhibited a collection of Australian painters including John Glover (1826), Louis Buvelot (1886) Hans Heyson (1902), Grace Cossington-Smith (1918), and William Dobell, Norman Lindsay, Donald Friend, Sali Herman, Sidney Nolan, John Olson, Charles Blackman, Arthur Boyd, and Pro Hart. George Shirling arrived in Falls Creek in 1962. He engaged Phil Nowell to build the original Koki Alpine Lodge which opened in 1965 with 14 beds. George operated the lodge with Michael “Baldy” Blackwell as manager. He also graduated in sport psychology in 1981 and was invited to become team psychologist for the Australian Winter Olympic team which went to Albertville, France, in 1992. He later owned the Red Onion Chalet. George credited the success of Koki to “Baldy” Blackwell. “Baldy” and Phil Nowell started the Trackers Mountain Lodge in partnership during the 1980s. In 1971 George sold Koki Lodge to Sigi Doerr. In 2024 the renamed Koki Alpine resort remains a highly popular destination in Falls Creek. George Shirling passed away on 27th February 2023. Folded printed paper souvenir of a sports tournament held aboard the HMAT ORSOVA (A67) whilst transporting Australian troops from Fremantle to Suez in April 1916. The document records the winning participants and results of a variety of sporting events held on Wednesday, March 22nd, Wednesday, March 29th and Wednesday, April 5th. There are also results of a boxing competition. The events concluded on Friday, 7th April, 1916. this is damaged having torn along fold lines in the paper.This souvenir was printed at sea aboard the HMAT ORSOVA. This is an ash tray sold to tourists as a souvenir of a visit to Warrnambool. It would have been relatively cheap to buy. Souvenirs such as this were mass-produced for the tourist market and a relevant photograph inserted on the base to suit the town or settlement where they were sold. As cigarette-smoking is no longer so socially acceptable, items such as this one are no longer sold as tourist souvenirs. This item is of interest as an example of the type of souvenir sold to tourists in Australia in the first half of the 20th century, probably in the 1940s or 1950s. It is of particular local interest because it contains a photograph of Warrnambool during that time. This is a souvenir tin ash tray circular in shape. It has a colour photograph of Warrnambool inserted into the base of the dish (Flagstaff Hill showing part of the fortifications, the Lower Lighthouse, a camping ground and Warrnambool Bay).
