Tool - Nurses Lamp
The lamp helps contextualise the nursing history of our region. This item was owned by Sister Hebe Graham, who was born in 1890 and trained at Stawell Hospital before WW1. She became a specialist nurse and received a commendation from Lord Duggan, Governor of Victoria.Flat, rectangular lamp with light fixed at top centre and activated by small spring-loaded button on top of lamp. "Heatherlie " homes have been extended and are still operated under the auspices of the Uniting Church Australia. Invitation retained by Absalom family members for 44 years. "Heatherlie" name originated from owners of wooden house built by EB Phillips, furniture store owner. Name taken from mrs Annie Phillips (nee Bone) family home in Stawell.Original document, invitation to dedication of "Heatherlie" by Mrs Ethel Mitchell, Moderator of Uniting Church in Victoria and the official opening By the R Hon Malcolm Fraser, PM of Australia and Member of Wannon. Helen McKay was a foundation member of the Eureka Stockade Progress Association, and later a life member. The Eureka Stockade Memorial Park comprised a monument to those killed in the Battle of Eureka in 3 December 1854, gardens, swimming pool, waterlily pond, hall and memorial gates. The gateway, on Stawell Street Ballarat, is dedicated to Helen McKay. Helen Maria (Helen) Reddie was the first Australian born child of William Reddie and his wife Christiana. Kenneth Joynson Flecknoe joined the Ballarat School of Mines Council in 1979 becoming its 11th President in 1981. He joined the Ballarat Courier newspaper in 1953 as company secretary, becoming General Manager in 1966. Flecknoe joined the board of directors in 1968 and was managing director from 1969 until his retirement in 1987. Flecknoe was chairman of the Ballarat Broadcasters Pty Ltd (3BA), of the gateway Publishing Company which published newspapers in Ararat and Stawell and of the Ballarat Publishing Company which published Ballarat News, and was formerly deputy chairman of associated Broadcasting Services Ltd (BTV6 Ballarat and GMV Shepparton). He was also Chairman of the advisory board of Ballarat's St John of God Hospital. Flecknoe's contribution to the Royal South Street Society, of which he was a past president, and a committee member since 1961, was rewarded with life membership. He was also a life member of the Ballarat Historical Park Association (Sovereign Hill).
